Barbodes hemictenus was described by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Robert Earl Richardson in 1908, as part of a survey of fishes of the Philippine Archipelago. The type locality is Lake Naujan on the island of Mindoro, Philippines. The species name hemictenus derives from the Greek roots hḗmisys (half) and ktenós (comb), a reference to features of the dorsal spine, as recorded by the ETYFish Project on the etymology of Cyprinidae names.
