Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes pachycheilus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert W.C.T. Herre in 1924 from specimens collected in Lake Lanao, Mindanao. The species was originally placed in the genus Barbodes, which Herre used for Philippine barbs of this form. Under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names), the current valid combination remains Barbodes pachycheilus (Herre, 1924), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species has been moved between genera since its original description — FishBase records it in Barbodes as the accepted genus.
The epithet pachycheilus derives from Greek: pachys (thick, stout) and cheilos (lip), referring to the thickened lips that characterise the species. Lake Lanao harboured a remarkable endemic cyprinid radiation of some 18 or more species in the genus Barbodes, all apparently derived from a single ancestral colonisation; B. pachycheilus was one of these radiating forms. The entire endemic Lanao barb assemblage has now been reduced to a handful of species, most listed as Extinct or Critically Endangered.
Morphology
Barbodes pachycheilus reached a recorded maximum total length of 5.5 in, making it a medium-sized member of the Lake Lanao Barbodes radiation. As the name suggests, the species bore distinctly thick or fleshy lips — a feature that likely reflects a specialised feeding mode on benthic or lithophilic food sources within the lake.
Beyond its maximum size and the diagnostic lip character, detailed morphological data for B. pachycheilus are sparse in the available literature, a consequence of the species' extinction and the limited material in museum collections from the early twentieth-century survey work. The Lanao barbs as a group showed considerable variation in body form and feeding adaptations across the endemic assemblage, ranging from slender pelagic forms to heavier-bodied benthic types.
Habitat
Lake Lanao is one of the oldest lakes in Southeast Asia, a large, deep, ancient volcanic crater lake on the Lanao Plateau of Mindanao at around 2297 ft elevation. The lake is warm and relatively stable year-round, with FishBase recording a temperature of approximately 75 °F and a near-neutral pH of around 7 for the lake's waters, with very low hardness (approximately 5 dGH).
Barbodes pachycheilus was benthopelagic — associated with the lake bottom or its immediate vicinity — and its thickened lips suggest foraging along hard or soft substrates in the littoral and sublittoral zones. Like all the Lake Lanao endemic barbs, it was confined to this single lake and had no connection to river or stream habitats outside of it; the lake's long isolation drove its evolution but also made its entire population globally irreplaceable.
Feeding
FishBase classifies Barbodes pachycheilus as a micropredator, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. This dietary profile is consistent with a benthopelagic barb foraging along the lake floor and in the water column above it, using its well-developed lips to manipulate or scrape small invertebrates from surfaces or sift them from soft sediment.
The distinctive lip morphology that gives the species its name likely represents a feeding specialisation within the Lake Lanao radiation — an adaptation that differentiated it from other sympatric Barbodes species exploiting different food resources in the same lake. The full extent of its dietary ecology was not described before the species disappeared.
Mating
No breeding observations of Barbodes pachycheilus were recorded before its extinction, and the species cannot be studied in captivity. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Barbodes, it would have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal to barbs: a driving male pursuing a gravid female over the substrate or among any available structure, with eggs and milt released simultaneously and no pair bond or parental care following spawning.
The lake's endemic barbs showed no evidence of the nest-building, mouthbrooding, or parental-guarding behaviours found in some other Lake Lanao fishes. Spawning cues in the stable tropical lake environment were likely tied to seasonal rainfall inputs, water-level fluctuations, or temperature shifts rather than the dramatic seasonal cycles of temperate barb species.
Breeding
Barbodes pachycheilus was never maintained or bred in aquaria, and no captive population existed at the time of its extinction. All knowledge of the species derives from museum specimens and early field surveys. Like other Barbodes species, it would have been an egg-scatterer that broadcast adhesive eggs over the substrate with no subsequent parental care — adults would have provided no protection against predation of eggs or larvae.
The absence of a captive breeding programme and the failure to establish any ex-situ population meant that once wild populations collapsed in Lake Lanao, the species was lost entirely. Several of the co-occurring Lake Lanao endemics suffered the same fate in the same decades.
In the aquarium
Barbodes pachycheilus was never established in the aquarium trade and is now extinct. No captive specimens are known to exist. Historical accounts make no reference to the species being exported or kept, and its disappearance predates any systematic effort to collect Lake Lanao endemics for conservation aquaculture.
For aquarists interested in the Lake Lanao endemic fauna, the story of B. pachycheilus and its congeners stands as a cautionary example of what can be lost when alien species are introduced into isolated lake systems with long-evolved endemic fish communities.
Conservation
Barbodes pachycheilus is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment by Torres et al. published in 2020 confirming no credible records since 1964. Multiple targeted surveys of Lake Lanao have failed to detect the species over more than half a century, and it is considered globally extinct.
The primary driver of extinction was the introduction of alien predatory species into Lake Lanao — principally the flowerhorn and other non-native fishes introduced from the mid-twentieth century onward — which devastated the endemic barb assemblage through predation and competition. Compounding pressures included overexploitation of the lake's fisheries, destructive fishing methods, and progressive water quality deterioration from agricultural and domestic pollution. The Lake Lanao extinctions represent one of the most significant freshwater fish extinction events in Southeast Asian history, eliminating most of a unique endemic radiation that had evolved over millions of years in a single isolated lake system.
