Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta caelestis was described by Schöter, Özuluğ and Freyhof in 2009, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 20, number 3, pages 229–236). The type locality is the Göksu River in southern Anatolia, Turkey, and the species is placed in the genus Capoeta — the western Asian and Mediterranean scraper barbs, a group characterised by their specialised pharyngeal teeth and algae-scraping feeding mode.
The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae and has its centre of diversity in Anatolia, the Levant and Iran. Several close relatives occur in nearby drainages: Capoeta coadi is known from fast-flowing gravel-bed rivers in Iran, sharing the same basic ecology. The epithet caelestis is Latin for "heavenly" or "of the sky" — a name that evokes the clear, sky-reflecting waters of the Taurus mountain streams where this fish lives.
Diagnostic meristic characters that distinguish C. caelestis from its congeners include 57–67 lateral line scales, one pair of barbels, 17–21 gill rakers on the first arch, and a weak last unbranched dorsal-fin ray that lacks serrations on its posterior margin — a useful field character in a genus where the strength and serration of that ray varies among species.
Morphology
Capoeta caelestis is a moderately large barb, reaching nearly 8 in in standard length — FishBase records a maximum of 7.5 in SL for unsexed specimens. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the manner typical of current-adapted cyprinids, built for holding position in flowing water rather than for the deep-bodied acceleration of stiller-water species.
The species bears a single pair of barbels, a benthopelagic habit and the scraper-type mouth characteristic of Capoeta — positioned slightly ventrally and adapted for grazing periphyton from rock and gravel surfaces. The last unbranched ray of the dorsal fin is notably weak and lacks the serrations seen on the same ray in some related Capoeta species, a character used in the original description to separate it from its congeners. Coloration in life is not fully documented in the available literature, but as with other Taurus-region Capoeta, the fish is likely silvery with a darker dorsal surface, well suited to its river-bottom existence.
Habitat
The Taurus scraper is endemic to a narrow coastal strip of southern Anatolia, occupying drainages between the Dim Stream (Alanya) in the west and the Göksu River (Silifke) in the east. These are Taurus mountain rivers that flow through limestone terrain to the Mediterranean — typically fast-flowing, clear and well-oxygenated, with gravel or rocky substrates where algae and biofilm accumulate.
Temperature data from the Göksu system and related Ermenek tributary indicate a strongly seasonal thermal regime: mean winter water temperatures around 48–50 °F and summer peaks approaching 70–72 °F, with a mean annual temperature near 59 °F. The rivers are fed largely by snowmelt and limestone springs, making them cool, moderately hard and probably neutral to slightly alkaline — a chemistry profile typical of Capoeta across the Mediterranean rim. Within this range C. caelestis is described as often quite abundant across a variety of stream and river habitats, suggesting some tolerance of differing current speeds and substrate types within the broader Taurus river environment.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus Capoeta, the Taurus scraper is specialised as a grazer of periphyton — the biofilm of algae, diatoms and associated microorganisms that coats submerged rock and gravel surfaces in fast-flowing rivers. The ventrally positioned mouth and robust pharyngeal dentition of Capoeta are adaptations for this scraping mode of feeding, allowing the fish to rasp material from hard substrates in well-lit, current-swept reaches.
In addition to algal material, it likely takes small invertebrates and organic detritus incidentally, as do most cyprinid grazers. The fast, clear rivers of the Taurus system are productive for epilithic algae, and the relative abundance of C. caelestis across its range suggests a reliable food supply. Specific diet studies for this species are not available in the published literature captured here.
Mating
Capoeta caelestis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive strategy universal among Capoeta and barbs generally. FishBase records that the species spawns in fast-flowing waters, consistent with the behaviour of other large riverine barbs that move into shallower, well-oxygenated reaches during the breeding season to release eggs over gravel or cobble substrates.
There is no nest construction, no pair bond extending beyond the spawning act, and no parental guarding of eggs or fry. Courtship involves driving behaviour in which ripe males pursue gravid females through the current, releasing eggs and milt together in a brief embrace over the substrate. The adhesive eggs settle among gravel and stones where they develop without further attention from either parent.
Breeding
In the wild, spawning in C. caelestis is tied to the seasonal flood pulse of the Taurus rivers — likely triggered by rising spring temperatures as snowmelt raises river levels, bringing fish into the faster, shallower sections of the drainage. The fast-flowing spawning habitat suggested by FishBase is consistent with broadcast spawning over clean gravel, a strategy that relies on current to carry milt and provide oxygenation to developing eggs rather than on any parental behaviour.
Fecundity data specific to this species are not available, but large female barbs of comparable size in related species produce thousands of eggs per spawning event. Eggs and larvae receive no parental care and are vulnerable to predation and spate events; the species' relative abundance across its range implies that recruitment is generally successful under natural conditions. Captive breeding of this species has not been documented in the hobbyist literature.
In the aquarium
Capoeta caelestis is not an established aquarium fish. As a narrowly endemic Turkish species reaching nearly 8 in, it requires large, well-filtered tanks with strong water movement and cool, hard, alkaline water reflecting its Taurus mountain river origins — conditions that differ substantially from the warm, soft water typical of most community aquaria. It is not available through the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or public aquaria with a focus on Mediterranean or western Asian freshwater fauna.
For hobbyists interested in the genus Capoeta or in cool-water scraper barbs from the western Palearctic, the ecological requirements of C. caelestis — strong flow, rocky substrates, seasonal temperature variation down toward 50 °F and up toward 72 °F, neutral to alkaline water chemistry — give a useful framework for understanding what this type of fish needs, even if the species itself remains outside the practical reach of the aquarium hobby.
Conservation
Capoeta caelestis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 3 February 2013. The species is described as often quite abundant within its range, and its occurrence across multiple stream and river systems between Alanya and Silifke gives it some resilience compared with truly single-river endemics.
Nevertheless, the narrow endemic range confined to coastal Taurus drainages makes the species inherently vulnerable to localised threats. The Göksu River, the type locality, is subject to agricultural water extraction, dam construction and diffuse pollution from the surrounding landscape — pressures common to Mediterranean river systems across Anatolia. The Göksu valley is designated an internationally important protected area in part for its biodiversity, which may afford some degree of habitat protection. As with many small-range Anatolian cyprinids, ongoing monitoring of population status and the condition of its river habitats would be prudent given the pace of water-resource development in the region.
