Capoeta coadi is a robust, elongate barb described in 2016 from the Beshar River, a tributary of the Karun drainage in south-western Iran. Named in honour of the Canadian ichthyologist Brian W. Coad, the species belongs to the genus Capoeta — a group of medium to large freshwater barbs distributed across Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Levant and the rivers of Iran — and represents one of several Capoeta species restricted to a single drainage or a handful of closely related basins in the Zagros uplands. It inhabits moderately fast, well-oxygenated rivers over gravel and rock, in the clear, alkaline waters typical of limestone-fed Iranian river systems. The species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Capoeta coadi was described in 2016 by Alwan, Zareian and Esmaeili from the Beshar River (30°47'27"N, 51°25'13"E), which belongs to the Karun River drainage in Khuzestan and Kohgiluyeh provinces, south-western Iran. The holotype measured 6 in standard length. The description appeared in the peer-reviewed literature in 2016 and the species is accepted in the Catalog of Fishes under the combination Capoeta coadi Alwan, Zareian & Esmaeili, 2016.

The genus Capoeta is a Western Palearctic barb lineage belonging to the subfamily Barbinae within the family Cyprinidae. It is distributed from the Aegean basin through Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the upland river systems of Iran and Central Asia. Several dozen species are currently recognised, many of them known from only one or two river drainages — a pattern reflecting the fragmentation of upland water bodies across the Iranian plateau and the Zagros. Capoeta coadi fits this pattern as a single-drainage endemic of the Karun system.

Morphology

Capoeta coadi is an elongate, cylindrical barb reaching at least 7.5 in standard length. The body form is typical of Capoeta: moderately streamlined rather than deep-bodied, built for life in moving water. Lateral-line scale counts run 70 to 84, and the dorsal fin carries 8 to 9 branched rays — diagnostic counts used in the original species description to distinguish it from related Karun-basin congeners.

Coloration in life is described as golden-greenish to silvery on the flanks, shading to a paler underside. No bold bars or distinct markings are reported; like many medium-to-large Capoeta, the overall impression is of a subtly metallic, relatively plain-sided fish — functional camouflage against gravel and rock in clear upland rivers. The original description records habitat water conditions of pH 8.5, temperature 74 °F, dissolved oxygen 9.89 mg/L and conductivity 395 µS/cm at the type locality, indicating clear, well-oxygenated, moderately mineralised water.

Habitat

The species is known from the Beshar River and the broader Karun drainage of south-western Iran. The Karun is the largest river in Iran, rising in the Zagros Mountains and draining through Khuzestan to the Shatt al-Arab and the Persian Gulf. In the upland reaches where Capoeta coadi occurs, the river runs over gravel and rock substrates in medium-to-fast flow, with clear, cold to warm-temperate water rich in dissolved oxygen — conditions recorded at 74 °F and 9.89 mg/L O2 at the type locality.

The alkaline pH (8.5) and moderate conductivity (395 µS/cm) at the collection site reflect limestone geology characteristic of the Zagros, which buffers the water and keeps it hard and clear. This is the typical hydrochemical setting for upland Iranian Capoeta: neutral to distinctly alkaline, moderately to well mineralised, and markedly different from the soft, acidic blackwaters of tropical Asian barb habitats.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 2.6 for Capoeta coadi, placing it at the lower end of omnivory — consistent with the feeding ecology of the Capoeta genus more broadly. Medium-to-large Capoeta species typically graze on algae and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces, supplemented with aquatic invertebrates, plant material and organic detritus carried by the current.

The grazing lifestyle is reflected in the labroid-like mouth configuration common in the genus: a slightly subterminal to inferior mouth suited for picking material from the substrate rather than pursuing prey in open water. In the clear, fast rivers of the Zagros, such species are among the principal biotic processors of periphyton on rock and gravel, filling an ecological role analogous to that of suckermouth catfishes in South American upland rivers.

Mating

No direct observations of spawning behaviour have been published for Capoeta coadi. The species is assumed to follow the reproductive pattern consistent for the genus and for cyprinid barbs generally: egg-scattering over gravel or among rocks, with no parental care of any kind.

In related Capoeta and in many larger Western Palearctic barbs, spawning is seasonal and linked to spring warming and elevated flows following snowmelt in the upland catchments. Males pursue gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief contact events. No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond a transient courtship site, and the broadcast eggs receive no attention from either parent.

Breeding

Capoeta coadi is not bred in captivity in any documented programme. Its relatively large adult size (approaching 8 in SL), specialised habitat requirements — clear, fast, cool-to-warm alkaline water over gravel — and restricted known range mean it is not part of the ornamental trade, and no captive breeding accounts exist in the hobby literature.

By inference from related taxa, a spawning event would involve scattering adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over clean gravel, the eggs settling among substrate particles where they incubate without parental attention. Adults in river barbs of this size class may be seasonal migrants, moving upstream to clean gravel beds in spring and returning to deeper pools at other times of year, though no data specific to this species are available.

In the aquarium

Capoeta coadi is not an aquarium fish. At a maximum recorded size of 7.5 in SL it would require a large tank, and its ecological requirements — fast flow, high dissolved oxygen, hard alkaline water, and likely a cool-to-warm temperature regime reflecting the Zagros uplands — present significant husbandry challenges. The species is absent from the ornamental trade and is unlikely to appear in it.

For aquarists interested in the broader Capoeta group, several smaller species from Turkey and the Caucasus occasionally appear in specialist collections, and the genus is best kept in biotope-aware setups replicating alkaline, well-oxygenated river conditions with substantial water movement and clean substrate.

Conservation

Capoeta coadi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As a species described only in 2016 from a restricted range within the Karun drainage, formal assessment data are not yet available.

The Karun River and its tributaries face multiple anthropogenic pressures: large-scale dam construction (the Karun cascade includes some of Iran's largest hydropower installations), water abstraction for agriculture, and increasing sedimentation from land-use change in the Zagros watershed. These factors are known threats to endemic freshwater fish in the region. Single-drainage endemics like Capoeta coadi are particularly vulnerable to such impacts because there is no refuge population in another basin. A precautionary concern for the species' status is warranted even in the absence of a formal assessment.
