Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta ekmekciae was formally described by Turan, Kottelat, Kirankaya and Engin in 2006 on the basis of specimens collected from the Çoruh River in northeastern Anatolia. The description diagnosed the new species from congeners principally by a shorter head, a deeper caudal peduncle, a shorter caudal fin, and a greater number of serrae on the posterior margin of the last simple dorsal ray — a character set that has been used to delimit Capoeta species throughout Anatolia and the Caucasus.
The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is widely distributed across Anatolia, the Caucasus, Iran, and central Asia. It is characterised by a fusiform to moderately deep body, small to moderately large scales, an inferior mouth, and the keratinised lower-lip edge that gives scraper barbs their functional common name. The genus is distinct from the European Barbus and the North African Luciobarbus, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Capoeta ekmekciae as a valid species under the current combination.
A molecular revision by Çiçek and colleagues (2022) proposed that C. ekmekciae may represent a junior synonym of the widespread C. capoeta on the basis of shared cytochrome b haplotypes and an inability to identify diagnostic morphological traits separating allopatric populations. This synonymy has not been universally accepted, and traditional taxonomic treatments continue to recognise C. ekmekciae as a distinct taxon; the IUCN Red List assessment was conducted under the current name. The species epithet honours F. Güler Ekmekçi, ichthyologist at Hacettepe University, Ankara, in recognition of her contributions to Turkish freshwater fish taxonomy.
Morphology
Like other members of Capoeta, C. ekmekciae is a fusiform, moderately elongate barb with scales of moderate size and a subterminal to inferior mouth. The defining feature of the genus is the keratinised (horny) lower lip edge — a scraping organ that allows the fish to rasp algae, diatoms, and biofilm from stone and pebble surfaces. Capoeta ekmekciae is distinguished from related Anatolian species by a proportionally shorter head and caudal fin, a deeper caudal peduncle, and a higher serra count on the serrated posterior edge of the last unbranched dorsal ray.
Maximum recorded size is approximately 11 in standard length; specimens from the Deriner Dam impoundment on the Çoruh have been measured between 12.3 and 15 in total length, suggesting the species can grow somewhat larger in lacustrine conditions than the FishBase maximum implies. The species is benthopelagic in habit, spending most of its time close to the substrate where its scraping mouth is most effective.
Habitat
Capoeta ekmekciae is endemic to the Çoruh River (also rendered Chorokh River in Georgian sources), a major Black Sea tributary that rises in the Palandöken Mountains of Erzurum Province, runs through the steep gorges of the Kaçkar and Lesser Caucasus ranges, and enters the Black Sea near Batumi, Georgia. The Turkish portion of the basin constitutes the species' entire known native range. FishBase characterises its microhabitat as clear, slow-flowing water over a stone and pebble substrate — the kind of run-pool sequences typical of mid-reach Anatolian rivers where current slows enough to allow benthic grazing but the substrate remains coarse and clean.
The Çoruh basin is a temperate montane system: summers are warm but not hot, winters cold, and the river carries snowmelt pulses in spring. The ecology is subtropical-temperate rather than tropical, with well-oxygenated, moderately hard and alkaline water typical of limestone-dominated Anatolian catchments. Seasonal fluctuations in temperature and discharge appear to be part of the species' normal environmental range.
Feeding
Capoeta ekmekciae is an herbivore-grazer, using its keratinised lower lip to scrape periphyton — the community of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and associated organic matter that coats stone and pebble surfaces in clear, well-lit rivers. This scraping mode of feeding is the functional hallmark of the genus Capoeta and is reflected in the English vernacular name "scraper barb" applied broadly to the group.
In nature the species likely supplements its algal diet opportunistically with small invertebrates, detritus and plant fragments, as is typical of similarly specialised Anatolian cyprinids. The inferior mouth position, which points downward rather than forward, is an anatomical adaptation to picking food from horizontal and inclined hard surfaces rather than pursuing prey in open water.
Mating
Capoeta ekmekciae, in common with other cyprinids of the genus, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specialised nest is constructed and no parental investment follows the act of spawning. When fish are in reproductive condition, males pursue gravid females actively through the water column and over the substrate; eggs and milt are released together during brief lateral presses.
Large river barbs of the Capoeta-Barbus group in the western Palearctic are often seasonal spawners, moving to shallower gravel reaches in spring when snowmelt raises the river and water temperatures begin to climb. The adhesive eggs settle among stones and coarse gravel, where they receive no further attention from either parent. Adults may consume eggs they encounter, as is common across the family.
Breeding
Breeding in the wild is tied to the spring flood pulse of the Çoruh — rising water and warming temperatures after winter low-flow conditions act as the proximate cue for spawning migrations into shallower, swifter reaches. Egg deposition takes place over coarse gravel and stone substrate in relatively clear, oxygen-rich water, consistent with the spawning requirements documented for other large Anatolian Capoeta and Barbus species.
Capoeta ekmekciae is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no captive-breeding records are available. Given the species' size — potentially exceeding 12 in — and its cool temperate origin, it would require a large, well-filtered, cool-water system rather than a standard tropical aquarium, and its keeping outside its native region is essentially theoretical. Eggs hatch and larvae develop among the substrate interstices in the wild, receiving no parental care.
In the aquarium
Capoeta ekmekciae is not present in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to appear in it under that name. The scraper barbs (Capoeta spp.) as a group are large, primarily herbivorous, temperate-river fish that rarely make their way into the hobby; their adult size, grazing lifestyle, and cool-water requirements sit outside the parameters of a typical tropical community aquarium.
For the specialist keeper with a large, well-filtered, unheated or cool-water system, Capoeta species can make impressive display fish and are effective algae controllers on smooth rock surfaces. They require a strong current, high oxygen, and a diet rich in vegetable matter — spirulina-based foods, blanched greens, and algae wafers. Any specimen would almost certainly be wild-caught, and given the species' Near Threatened status and restricted range, responsible sourcing would be paramount. In practice, C. ekmekciae is a fish of scientific and conservation interest rather than a mainstream aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Capoeta ekmekciae as Near Threatened (NT), a status assigned in 2013. The principal conservation concern is the species' extreme endemism: it is known only from the Çoruh River basin, which confines its entire global population to a single drainage that spans roughly 19,311 mi² in northeastern Turkey and a short Georgian reach before reaching the Black Sea.
The Çoruh River has been subject to intensive hydropower development. The Deriner Dam, one of the tallest arch dams in the world, was completed on the main stem in 2012 and created a large impoundment; additional dams and diversion projects further fragment the system. Damming alters the thermal regime, modifies the flood pulse that triggers spawning migrations, submerges critical gravel spawning reaches, and can isolate upstream populations. Fish-fauna surveys conducted in the Deriner reservoir area have documented C. ekmekciae there, indicating at least some persistence in lacustrine conditions, but the long-term trajectory of a restricted endemic species within a heavily regulated river remains a legitimate concern.
The possible synonymy with the more widespread Capoeta capoeta (Güldenstädt, 1773) — which ranges across the South Caucasus, northern Iran and parts of Turkey — would, if accepted, effectively remove C. ekmekciae as a distinct taxon and shift its IUCN status to the evaluation of that broader species. Until that synonymy is formally adopted by the relevant authorities, the Near Threatened assessment stands and the management case for preserving the Çoruh's hydrological integrity remains strong.
