Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta kaput was described by Levin, Prokofiev and Roubenyan in 2019, published in Inland Water Biology (volume 12, issue 1, pages 32–41). The type locality is the Araxes River basin of Transcaucasia, specifically from the Akhuryan and Mezamor rivers — left-bank tributaries of the Araxes — in Armenia. The species is registered on FishBase under ID 70282 and the authority is recorded as the three authors and year of original description.
The genus Capoeta encompasses a group of algae-grazing, hard-water cyprinids distributed across the Middle East, Anatolia, the southern Caucasus and into Central Asia. They are characterised by a horny lower-jaw sheath used for scraping epilithic algae from rocks, and by their preference for flowing water. Capoeta kaput stands out from its congeners in possessing nine branched dorsal rays rather than the eight typical of related species, as well as a distinctive conical head shape. The epithet kaput is derived from the type locality in the Araxes basin.
The Catalog of Fishes recognises Capoeta kaput as a valid species. It is not a reclassification from an older combination; it was established as new to science at the time of its description.
Morphology
Capoeta kaput is a large barb. The holotype measured 10.5 in standard length, and the maximum known size reaches approximately 18 in. This places it among the larger representatives of its genus — well beyond the handful-sized Capoeta of the hobby trade and into the territory of a substantial river fish.
The most diagnostic feature separating C. kaput from congeners is its dorsal-fin formula: nine branched dorsal rays versus the eight found in closely related species. The head is described as conical in profile, and the lower jaw carries a sharp, well-developed horny sheath — the hallmark feeding tool of Capoeta, used to rasp attached algae from rocks and hard substrates. The body is laterally compressed and elongated in the manner typical of large river barbs adapted to flowing water. Habitat
Capoeta kaput is a freshwater fish of large, fast-flowing rivers in the Araxes basin. The Araxes (Aras) is a major Trans-Caucasian river rising in eastern Turkey and flowing through Armenia and Iran before joining the Kura. The known range of C. kaput encompasses its Armenian tributaries — the Akhuryan and Mezamor rivers — as well as the main Araxes itself across Iran and Turkey.
The climate of the Araxes basin is strongly continental and temperate: FishBase records a mean annual water temperature of approximately 48 °F, with seasonal extremes running from below freezing in winter to around 72 °F in summer. This is a river regime of cold winters and warm summers, contrasting sharply with the stable tropical conditions of Sundaland or South Asian barb habitats. The species is benthic-pelagic in habit, associated with the river bottom in flowing water — consistent with its algae-scraping lifestyle on rocky substrates.
Feeding
Capoeta kaput is a specialised herbivore and algae scraper. The sharp, keratinised sheath on its lower jaw is an adaptation for rasping epilithic (rock-encrusting) algae from hard substrates in flowing water — a feeding strategy shared across the genus Capoeta and analogous to the role played by some loricariid plecos in South America.
In its natural habitat, the species feeds on the biofilm and algal mats that accumulate on the stones and bedrock of large, fast-flowing Araxes tributaries. Benthic invertebrates and organic detritus may also be consumed opportunistically, as is common in large river cyprinids, but the primary trophic role of the genus and the morphology of the jaw point firmly toward an algae-grazing niche.
Mating
No published observations of wild or captive spawning behaviour exist for Capoeta kaput specifically, as the species was only described in 2019. Its biology can be inferred from the broader pattern established across large river Capoeta and related western Palearctic cyprinids.
Like virtually all barbs, Capoeta species are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. Males pursue gravid females through the current or over rocky substrate, and eggs and milt are released together with no nest construction and no bond beyond the spawning act. In the seasonal rivers of the Araxes basin, spawning is almost certainly tied to the spring rise in temperature and flow following snowmelt, a pattern typical of temperate Eurasian cyprinids. No parental care of any kind is given.
Breeding
Reproductive biology for Capoeta kaput has not been documented in the scientific literature to date. Based on the genus and the ecology of the species, it is expected to be a broadcast egg-scatterer that spawns seasonally in flowing water, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle over gravel or rocky substrate. Adults provide no parental care, and eggs and larvae are at the mercy of the current and substrate once scattered.
Capoeta kaput is not known to be kept or bred in aquaria. Its large adult size, temperate water requirements, and specialised algae-scraping diet make it a poor candidate for the general hobby. No captive husbandry information is available.
In the aquarium
Capoeta kaput is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense. Adults can exceed 17.5 in in length — comparable to a large mahseer or barbel — and the species requires cold, fast, well-oxygenated water with the seasonal temperature swings of a continental Caucasian river. It is specialised as an algae scraper in large flowing-water systems, which does not translate to captive conditions.
The species is unknown in the hobby trade and no published husbandry guidance exists. Any interest in the genus Capoeta from an aquarist perspective centres on smaller, more available relatives; C. kaput itself belongs to the category of large river cyprinids documented by science but absent from aquaria.
Conservation
Capoeta kaput has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species is not evaluated (NE) as of the time of writing, having been described only in 2019. The original authors noted, however, that the species appears to be rare and may require formal conservation consideration once survey data accumulate.
The Araxes River basin faces significant anthropogenic pressure: the river and its tributaries are impacted by water extraction for agriculture, damming, pollution from industrial and agricultural runoff, and the effects of increasing aridity in the region. As an endemic of a geographically restricted, heavily utilised basin — shared between Armenia, Iran and Turkey — any species with a narrow natural range in the Araxes system faces an inherently elevated long-term risk. A formal IUCN assessment would help clarify C. kaput's status and the threats it faces.
