Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta oguzelii was described in 2018 by Elp, Osmanoğlu, Kadak and Turan on the basis of specimens collected from the Ezine Stream, Devrekani, Kastamonu province, in the Black Sea basin of northern Turkey. The description was published in Zoology in the Middle East. The Plazi TreatmentBank record confirms the authority and the type locality.
The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae (subfamily Barbinae) and is centred on the Middle East, Anatolia, and the Caucasus, with around fifteen species recognised from Turkish freshwaters alone. Unlike many Asian barbs that were historically lumped in the old, paraphyletic genus Puntius, Capoeta has a longer taxonomic history as a distinct genus in its own right.
The species epithet oguzelii honours a person — following the pattern common in many recent Capoeta descriptions — though the dedicatee is not named in the cache sources consulted here. No widely used vernacular (common) name has been recorded for this species in the literature.
Morphology
Capoeta oguzelii is a small fish relative to other members of its genus. Specimens examined in the original description ranged from 2–5.5 in standard length (SL), with the holotype measuring 4.5 in SL. For a Capoeta, these dimensions place it at the smaller end of the genus's size spectrum.
Diagnostic characters recorded at description include: a single pair of barbels (many congeners have two pairs); the absence of a keratinized lower jaw edge (a scraping pad present in some related species); a weakly ossified last dorsal ray rather than the strong, spine-like ossification seen in larger Capoeta; 7.5 branched dorsal rays; and 7–10 gill rakers on the first gill arch. These characters, taken together, distinguish C. oguzelii from the other Turkish Capoeta at the time of its description.
Body colouration details are not reported in the sources captured here, which focus on meristic and morphometric characters. Like most Capoeta, the fish is likely a relatively plain, silver-bronze stream barb without bold markings.
Habitat
The species is known exclusively from the Ezine Stream in the Devrekani area of Kastamonu province, northern Turkey — a tributary system of the Black Sea drainage. The original description records the habitat as clear, moderately flowing stream water with a stone and sand-mud substrate, which is characteristic of the cool, well-oxygenated upland and foothill streams that Capoeta species typically occupy across Anatolia.
The Black Sea coast of Turkey supports a relatively cool, humid climate compared with the more arid interior. Streams in this region are fed by considerable rainfall and tend to remain clean and well-oxygenated, with water temperatures substantially lower in summer than the fully Mediterranean streams of the south or the warmer rivers of the Tigris–Euphrates system. No formal water chemistry data (pH, hardness, temperature range) for the Ezine Stream itself appear in the sources consulted, but streams of this drainage type in northern Anatolia are generally neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard, as befits their geology.
The extreme endemism of C. oguzelii — confined to a single small stream — means the entire known range of the species is encompassed within a very small geographic area.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study for Capoeta oguzelii appears in the literature captured here. As a member of Capoeta in an Anatolian hill stream, the species almost certainly feeds on a combination of periphytic algae and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces, benthic invertebrates (chironomid larvae, mayfly nymphs, small crustaceans), and organic detritus.
The absence of a keratinized lower jaw edge distinguishes C. oguzelii from those Capoeta that are strongly adapted for scraping encrusting algae from hard substrates, suggesting its diet may lean somewhat more towards invertebrate prey and softer plant or detrital material than in its more heavily keratinized relatives, though this remains to be confirmed by direct stomach content analysis.
Mating
No specific reproductive behavioural study of Capoeta oguzelii has been published, but the reproductive biology of the genus follows the standard cyprinid egg-scattering template. Spawning males pursue and drive gravid females over the substrate or through any available vegetation, with eggs and milt released during brief lateral presses. The species forms no lasting pair bond and holds no territory beyond brief courtship interactions.
Like other Capoeta, C. oguzelii very likely undertakes some degree of seasonal upstream or lateral movement to suitable spawning microhabitats — typically gravel or cobble riffles with clean, flowing water — consistent with the pattern seen in other small Anatolian stream barbs. Exact triggers (photoperiod, temperature threshold, spate events) have not been reported for this species.
Breeding
Capoeta oguzelii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like all barbs, it provides no parental care of any kind: after eggs are scattered and fertilised over the substrate, the adults disperse and take no further role. There is no nest, no guarding of eggs or fry, and no mouthbrooding.
The eggs are presumably adhesive and settle among gravel or coarse substrate particles, where they develop in the flowing, well-oxygenated current. Specific data on clutch size, incubation period, or larval development are not recorded in sources consulted here. The species has not been reported in the aquarium trade, so captive breeding observations are absent.
In the aquarium
Capoeta oguzelii does not appear to be available in the aquarium hobby. It is a recently described, single-stream endemic from a remote area of northern Turkey, and there is no evidence of collection for the ornamental trade or of captive maintenance outside its native range.
Were it ever to become available, its biology suggests it would require conditions typical of cool, well-oxygenated Anatolian stream barbs: clean, moderately hard, neutral to slightly alkaline water with good water movement and aeration, and temperatures cooler than those used for tropical barbs. A tank designed for cold- or cool-water stream species, with smooth or rounded stones as substrate and strong filtration, would be appropriate. Given its small size relative to other Capoeta, it would be a compact fish by barb standards.
Conservation
Capoeta oguzelii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. However, its extreme endemism — the entire known range is a single small stream, the Ezine Stream in Kastamonu province — places it in the category of species inherently at high risk from any localised disturbance. A single pollution event, water extraction project, stream channelisation, or introduction of invasive species could affect a substantial fraction of the global population.
Turkey's freshwater fish fauna is among the most endemic-rich in the Palearctic, and a significant number of its narrow-range endemics face pressures from agriculture, dam construction, irrigation water abstraction, and invasive species such as topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva). It is one of fifteen Capoeta species endemic to Turkish freshwaters, a genus for which range-restricted endemism is the rule rather than the exception.
A formal IUCN assessment — likely in the Vulnerable or Endangered category given the single-stream range — would be a valuable first step toward targeted conservation management for this species.
