Capoeta pyragyi is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid described in 2017 from the Tireh and Sezar rivers of Lorestan Province in western Iran — tributaries of the Tigris drainage in the Persian Gulf basin. A member of the algae-scraping genus Capoeta, it reaches around 7.5 in in total length and was long lumped under the broader Capoeta damascina before careful morphological analysis by Jouladeh-Roudbar and colleagues revealed it as a distinct species. It is named in honour of the eighteenth-century Turkmen poet Magtymguly Pyragy, a tribute that places this small Iranian river barb squarely within a tradition of commemorative scientific nomenclature.

Taxonomy & naming

Capoeta pyragyi was formally described in 2017 by Arash Jouladeh-Roudbar, Soheil Eagderi, Lourdes Murillo-Ramos, Hamid Reza Ghanavi, and Ignacio Doadrio. The description was part of a broader revision of the Capoeta species complex within the Tigris drainage that simultaneously recognised two additional new species from the same basin. Prior to this work, specimens of C. pyragyi had been misidentified as Capoeta damascina, a wide-ranging Middle Eastern barb; fine-scale morphometric and meristic analysis — including the arrangement of lateral-line scales (68–76), the concave outer margin of the dorsal fin, and the number of scales around the caudal peduncle (24–26) — separated it reliably from its congeners.

The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is characteristic of the Western Palearctic and Middle East, ranging from Anatolia and the Levant through Iran to Central Asia. The holotype of C. pyragyi measures 6 in standard length and was collected from the Tireh River. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the species as valid under the combination Capoeta pyragyi Jouladeh-Roudbar et al., 2017.

The specific epithet pyragyi honours Magtymguly Pyragy (c. 1724–c. 1807), the classical poet of the Turkmen literary tradition; the name commemorates his cultural legacy across the wider region.

Morphology

Capoeta pyragyi has a relatively high, laterally compressed body typical of the genus. The species reaches a maximum recorded total length of 7.5 in. The dorsal fin has 4 unbranched and 8–9 branched rays and is notably concave along its outer margin — a feature that helps distinguish it from related Capoeta in the Tigris system. The lateral line is complete, with 68–76 scales, and 24–26 scales encircle the caudal peduncle.

One of the more striking diagnostic characters is a sexually dimorphic mouth: males have an arched mouth, while females carry a straighter profile. This character, unusual among cyprinids, is shared with several other Capoeta species and appears tied to the algae-scraping foraging mode characteristic of the genus. The mouth is adapted for rasping attached algae and biofilm from rocky substrates. The holotype was collected at a standard length of 6 in, indicating that individuals approach their maximum size in natural populations.

Habitat

Capoeta pyragyi is known only from the Tireh and Sezar rivers in Lorestan Province, western Iran — both tributaries of the Tigris drainage that eventually drains to the Persian Gulf. These rivers descend from the Zagros mountain ranges and carry cool to moderately warm, well-oxygenated water over rocky and gravelly beds. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, consistent with a life spent close to the substrate where algal growth supports its scraping diet.

The Tigris drainage in Iran is characterised by neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water reflecting the limestone and calcareous geology of the Zagros — conditions typical for Western Palearctic cyprinids inhabiting the Mediterranean-rim and Middle Eastern river basins. No published water-chemistry measurements specific to C. pyragyi's collection localities are available in the literature, but the broader Capoeta habitat model points to flowing, rocky-bottomed streams with moderate current and relatively clear water.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus Capoeta, C. pyragyi is an algae-scraping benthivore. The specially adapted arched mouth of males and the robust pharyngeal dentition characteristic of the genus are well suited to rasping periphyton, diatoms, and filamentous algae from hard substrates. Foraging takes place close to the bottom over stones and boulders where biofilm accumulates in well-lit riffles.

In addition to algae, Capoeta species typically ingest organic detritus, small invertebrates, and plant fragments incidentally while grazing the substrate. This opportunistic dimension is common to the benthopelagic cyprinid feeding guild in Middle Eastern rivers, where seasonal variation in algal productivity and invertebrate abundance shapes the dietary mix across the year.

Mating

No dedicated spawning study of Capoeta pyragyi has been published, but the reproductive biology of the genus is broadly consistent across species. Capoeta, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest-building, no territory held beyond transient courtship pursuit, and no pair bond persisting beyond the act of spawning. Males drive gravid females through rocky and gravelly areas or over submerged vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together in a brief, repeated embrace.

Spawning in Capoeta species of the Zagros-draining rivers is generally seasonal and tied to spring warming and increased river flow following snowmelt — conditions that trigger the hormonal cascade leading to maturation and spawning. The males' arched-mouth dimorphism may play a role in display or competition, though this has not been experimentally confirmed for C. pyragyi specifically.

Breeding

Capoeta pyragyi is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. Eggs are adhesive and are scattered over rocky substrates or among coarse gravel and submerged roots; the adults give no further attention to eggs or larvae after spawning. This is the universal reproductive strategy across the cyprinid barb group: large river Capoeta may undertake limited upstream migrations to reach suitable spawning riffles, but no nest is constructed and no guarding occurs.

The species has not been reported in the ornamental aquarium trade, and captive breeding accounts specific to C. pyragyi are absent from the hobbyist literature. Given its restricted known range and relatively large adult size, it is unlikely to become established in the hobby in the near term. Reproductive parameters such as fecundity, egg size, and larval development remain undescribed for this species.

In the aquarium

Capoeta pyragyi is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. As a larger benthic algae-scraper from cool, well-oxygenated mountain rivers in Iran, its husbandry requirements would call for a spacious tank with strong filtration and good water movement, alkaline to neutral water of moderate hardness, and a substrate of smooth stones or fine gravel on which algal growth can develop. Temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius are likely appropriate based on the Zagros river environment.

Were it ever to become available, the species' diet would need to supplement naturally grown algae with algae-based wafers and vegetable matter. Its restricted known range and lack of trade presence make it a subject of specialist interest rather than a mainstream aquarium prospect. Conservation considerations would also weigh against collection from its apparently small and localised wild populations.

Conservation

Capoeta pyragyi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026; the species was described only in 2017 and has not yet come through a formal evaluation cycle. Its known distribution is narrow — confined to the Tireh and Sezar rivers in Lorestan Province — which makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised stressor affecting those drainages.

The Zagros rivers of western Iran face growing pressures from dam construction for irrigation and hydropower, water abstraction for agriculture and urban use, and pollution from agricultural runoff. Capoeta species with restricted ranges in this region have proven sensitive to these impacts, and the small-population status of C. pyragyi — noted in its original description — warrants precautionary attention. No formal conservation measures specific to this species are known; its status will depend on the health of its narrow Tigris tributary habitat in Lorestan Province.
