Catlocarpio siamensis, the giant barb, is the largest cyprinid fish in the world — a massive, slow-moving vegetarian of the great rivers of mainland Southeast Asia capable of reaching three metres in length and 300 kilograms, though specimens of such scale are now vanishingly rare. Native to the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong basins, the species makes seasonal migrations between deep main-channel pools and seasonally inundated forests and floodplains, feeding almost entirely on aquatic plants, algae, fallen fruits and detritus. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with populations reduced to a fraction of their former abundance by dam construction, habitat degradation and overfishing across its entire range.

Taxonomy & naming

Catlocarpio siamensis was described by the British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, placed in the monotypic genus Catlocarpio — a name he erected specifically for this giant. The species has remained in Catlocarpio throughout the subsequent taxonomic history of the family; it has not passed through the large barb catch-all genera Barbus or Puntius that reshaped most of the Asian cyprinid tree during the twentieth century. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Catlocarpio siamensis Boulenger, 1898, with the authority unparenthesised because the species was placed in Catlocarpio from the outset.

Within the Cyprinidae, Catlocarpio is allied to the large-river barbs and mahseers (tribe Torini sensu lato) rather than to the small ornamental barbs of the Puntius complex. Its enormous adult size, heavily scaled body and predominantly phytophagous diet all separate it clearly from its nearest relatives. No subspecies or distinct population variants are formally recognised.

Morphology

Catlocarpio siamensis is built on a scale that dwarfs every other freshwater fish in its range. FishBase records a maximum total length of 118 in and a maximum weight of 300 kg, making it the world's largest cyprinid. In practice, individuals exceeding 59 in are now rarely reported; the very largest specimens known from historical accounts and early twentieth-century records have not been replicated in recent decades as populations have collapsed.

The body is deep, powerfully built and laterally compressed, covered in large, silvery scales. The head is broad and blunt, with a small, subterminal, toothless mouth suited to grazing soft plant matter and scooping algae and detritus from the substrate. The coloration in adults is a uniform silver to olive-grey, sometimes with a faint golden sheen on the flanks; juveniles may show slightly more contrast. The fins are large and well-developed, supporting the sustained movement required for seasonal migrations.

Habitat

The giant barb is a fish of large, lowland tropical rivers. Adults occupy the deep pools and main channels of major watercourses — the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong systems — where they find the depth and reduced current that suit their slow-moving, grazing lifestyle. During seasonal floods they migrate laterally into flooded forests, canals and floodplain lakes, exploiting the pulse of submerged terrestrial vegetation and fallen fruits that the wet season delivers.

Juveniles and subadults use tributary swamps, backwaters and the quieter margins of rivers — habitats that offer denser aquatic vegetation and lower predation pressure than the open main channel. FishBase records preferred water temperatures of 72–79 °F, a pH of 6.5–7.5 and a hardness of 1–10 dH, consistent with the warm, moderately soft, near-neutral water of lowland mainland Southeast Asian rivers. The species is benthopelagic and does not penetrate high-gradient, cool headwater reaches.

Feeding

Catlocarpio siamensis is predominantly vegetarian, with a trophic level of approximately 2.9 recorded by FishBase — low for a large fish, reflecting a diet that draws heavily on primary producers. The species feeds on algae, phytoplankton, aquatic macrophytes, the fruits of inundated terrestrial plants and organic detritus, using its toothless, subterminal mouth to graze surfaces and filter soft material from the water column and substrate.

The seasonal migration into flooded forests is driven in large part by food availability: the inundation delivers a temporary bonanza of fallen and submerged plant matter that would be inaccessible at low water. The slow, deliberate feeding style and the large body mass both fit a strategy built around processing large volumes of low-energy plant food rather than pursuing high-energy prey.

Mating

Like all barbs, Catlocarpio siamensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no territory held beyond the act of spawning, and no parental investment beyond the release of gametes. Courtship involves males driving gravid females, with eggs and milt released together in open water or over suitable substrate. In the wild the timing of spawning is seasonal, with eggs reported present in individuals from January through August and a peak appearing to fall in the May–July period, coinciding broadly with the onset of the monsoon and the associated rise in river levels.

The specific spawning habitat used by the giant barb in the main river channel — depth, substrate type, current speed — has not been documented in the primary literature, a gap that reflects the difficulty of observing a large, critically endangered fish in turbid river conditions. There are no records of courtship behaviour in captivity.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Catlocarpio siamensis has not been achieved under standard aquarium conditions, and the Aquarium Wiki records it as undocumented commercially. The species' enormous adult size, requirement for large river conditions and apparent dependence on seasonal hydrological cues for spawning make reproduction in captivity extremely difficult. Conservation organisations in Thailand have initiated research into captive breeding as part of efforts to sustain the species, but these programmes are conducted at the institutional scale and are not replicable by private keepers.

In the wild the giant barb is a broadcast spawner that scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate or into the water column; adults give no parental care, and eggs and larvae must survive without protection after spawning. The extended wild egg-presence window (January–August) likely reflects population-level variation in condition and timing across the range rather than a protracted single spawning event for individual fish.

In the aquarium

Catlocarpio siamensis is wholly unsuitable for the domestic aquarium. Even juvenile individuals grow rapidly toward sizes that exceed any practical home tank, and the species' eventual adult mass — potentially hundreds of kilograms — means that responsible husbandry requires the resources of a public aquarium or a large institutional facility. Aquatic Community notes that it should be considered only by expert keepers with appropriate infrastructure, and only very young fish are occasionally encountered in the trade.

For any facility considering the species, water should be warm (72–79 °F), near-neutral (pH 6.5–7.5) and moderately soft to moderately hard (1–10 dH), reflecting the lowland river conditions of its native range. The diet is primarily vegetarian — blanched greens, algae wafers, aquatic plant matter and soft fruits — consistent with its low trophic level in the wild. The conservation status of the species adds a strong ethical dimension to any acquisition.

Conservation

Catlocarpio siamensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, a status recorded in April 2011. The giant barb has declined catastrophically across its entire range in the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong basins as a result of dam construction blocking migratory routes and inundating spawning and foraging habitats, intensive overfishing — the species was historically a major food fish in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia — and the broad degradation of lowland river systems through sedimentation, pollution and the conversion of floodplain forests to agriculture.

Very large specimens are now effectively absent from the wild. National Geographic describes the species as one of Southeast Asia's largest and most imperilled freshwater fishes, and recent scientific work (including eDNA detection studies published in 2025) is focused on establishing where residual populations persist and informing conservation priorities. Captive breeding research is underway in Thailand, and legal protection exists in parts of the range, but enforcement in large river systems is difficult and the trajectory of the wild population remains deeply concerning.
