Taxonomy & naming
Hampala dispar was described by the American ichthyologist Hugh M. Smith in 1934, with the type locality given as the Monam Mun at Udon — a locality on the Mun River in what is now Ubon Ratchatani Province, northeastern Thailand. The holotype is deposited in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History as USNM 103366. The genus Hampala belongs to the family Cyprinidae and was erected to accommodate a group of large, predatory Southeast Asian barbs with a characteristic dark spot or blotch on the flank; the genus has never been synonymised into the old catch-all Puntius, and the Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Hampala dispar Smith, 1934.
Within the genus, H. dispar is most readily distinguished from the more widespread Hampala macrolepidota by its spotted or eye-blotch patterning rather than a single bold lateral bar, a distinction reflected in the specific epithet dispar (Latin: unlike, different). Some older literature refers to the species under variant common names — the ResearchGate population-dynamics literature from Thailand uses both "Eye-Spotted Barb" and "Spotted Hampala Barb" interchangeably for the same fish. The GBIF taxon record (key 3JJGM) confirms the current placement and type-locality data.
Morphology
Hampala dispar is a sizeable cyprinid, recorded to 14 in standard length on FishBase, which places it among the larger barbs routinely encountered in Mekong drainage fisheries. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout and a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth suited to seizing crustaceans and other invertebrates. A characteristic dark ocellus or eye-spot on the flank distinguishes it from other hampala barbs at a glance — this blotch, typically positioned below or behind the dorsal fin, is where the common name "eye-spotted" originates.
The fins are well-developed for an active pursuer; the dorsal is short-based and set mid-body, and the forked caudal fin is suited to bursts of speed. Colouration in life is silvery to brassy on the flanks, often with a faint iridescent sheen, with the dark lateral spot as the most conspicuous marking. Like most large barbs the species shows mild size-based sexual dimorphism, with ripe females visibly fuller in the abdomen, but strong secondary sexual characters are not documented for this species in the available literature.
Habitat
Hampala dispar is endemic to the Mekong basin, with confirmed records from Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. FishBase notes that it occurs in slowly moving or standing water habitats as well as the rapid-running mountain streams of the middle Mekong, a notably broad ecological tolerance for a single species. Seriously Fish describes it as preferring clear, well-oxygenated running water with mixed substrates of sand, gravel, rock, and mud in its natural state, though it has adapted readily to impounded water bodies — reservoirs and large lakes formed behind dams — that now occupy much of the Mekong floodplain.
During the monsoon rainy season the species migrates into inundated floodplain forest along river margins, exploiting the pulse of terrestrial invertebrates and organic material washed into the water. Juveniles in particular are associated with dense marginal vegetation. Water parameters from Seriously Fish suggest a near-neutral pH (approximately 7.0), moderate hardness (around 196 ppm total dissolved solids), and water temperature around 72–77 °F — conditions consistent with large, well-mixed tropical lowland rivers and reservoir water bodies.
Feeding
Hampala dispar is a carnivore with a strong focus on benthic and pelagic invertebrates. FishBase records the diet as consisting mainly of prawns, crabs, and shrimps, with some insect larvae and occasionally smaller fish also taken. Seriously Fish confirms this profile and describes the species as relying on suction feeding to capture prey — a method suited to engulfing mobile crustaceans and insects at close range rather than ram-feeding on fast-moving fish.
The prominence of prawns, crabs, and shrimps in the diet is ecologically significant: it places H. dispar in the guild of large invertivorous barbs that play a structuring role in Mekong benthic communities. In reservoir environments, where hard-substrate crustacean communities may differ from riverine ones, the species appears to shift opportunistically to whatever prey is most available, consistent with the generalist tendencies observed across Hampala.
Mating
Like all barbs, Hampala dispar is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no nest construction and no parental investment beyond the spawning act itself. In the wild, large river barbs of this type are typically seasonal spawners whose reproductive activity is triggered by the onset of the monsoon flood pulse — rising water levels, dropping water temperatures, and increased turbidity signal readiness to spawn. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over open substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, vigorous pairing runs.
No pair bond is formed, no territory is held beyond the moment of courtship, and spawning aggregations rather than isolated pairs are the likely norm in a schooling species with a strong pecking order. Breeding has not been recorded in captivity according to Seriously Fish, leaving the finer details of courtship display and spawning site selection undescribed.
Breeding
In the wild, Hampala dispar is presumed to spawn seasonally in synchrony with the Mekong flood pulse, with adults migrating to inundated floodplain areas or upstream spawning grounds during the rainy season — a pattern common to large cyprinids of the lower Mekong. Eggs are scattered over vegetation, submerged roots, or open substrate with no parental care; both eggs and larvae are left to fend for themselves after release. The population dynamics study conducted in Huai Kho Reservoir, Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand (published 2024, ResearchGate) examined the species in an impounded setting, suggesting that reservoir populations can sustain themselves without the full natural flood cycle, though the recruitment dynamics in standing water likely differ from those in riverine habitats.
Captive breeding has not been recorded in the hobby literature. The combination of large adult size, seasonally migratory behaviour, and requirement for environmental cues that replicate the monsoon flood make captive reproduction extremely difficult without purpose-built facilities.
In the aquarium
Hampala dispar is occasionally encountered in the specialist trade but is not a mainstream aquarium fish. Its adult size of up to 14 in SL immediately places it beyond the reach of most home aquaria; only very large systems — public aquaria or specialist fish rooms with tanks of several hundred litres — are appropriate. Seriously Fish notes that the species is gregarious and forms a pecking order within groups, and advises keeping it with species too large to be swallowed, as its predatory instincts and suction-feeding method make it a risk to anything small enough to be taken as prey.
Water conditions should reflect the large, well-oxygenated river and reservoir environments of the Mekong basin: a near-neutral pH around 7.0, moderate hardness, and temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, with strong filtration and high flow. The species is reported as peaceful towards similarly sized, non-swallowable companions, but its size, appetite, and need for open swimming space make it a specialist acquisition rather than a community fish. It is not commonly bred in captivity.
Conservation
Hampala dispar is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, a status supported by its broad distribution across the Mekong basin in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, and by its apparent adaptability to impounded water bodies. FishBase notes that the species has become common in the large reservoirs created by Mekong tributary dams, providing a degree of buffering against the loss of free-flowing river habitats in the region.
Nevertheless, the Mekong drainage faces serious and ongoing hydrological modification. The proliferation of large dams on both the mainstream Mekong and its major tributaries — particularly in Laos, China, and Cambodia — disrupts the seasonal flood pulse that drives the reproductive cycles and floodplain migrations of large barbs like H. dispar. Sedimentation, flow regulation, and the fragmentation of river networks may affect the species' ability to access traditional spawning and nursery habitats even where adult populations persist in reservoirs. Commercial and subsistence fishing pressure in the lower Mekong is also substantial. These cumulative pressures, though not yet sufficient to disqualify an LC listing, merit continued monitoring as dam development in the basin continues.
