The species belongs to the genus Cyclocheilichthys, a group of Southeast Asian cyprinids placed in the family Cyprinidae and characterised by the absence of barbels — a feature that sets them apart from many of their near relatives within the broader barb assemblage.
The genus Cyclocheilichthys has had a complicated taxonomic history typical of the old catch-all groupings within Asian cyprinids.
