Taxonomy & naming
Mystacoleucus chilopterus was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1935. The type locality is recorded as Srisawat (Si Sawat) on the Khwae Yai River, a tributary of the Mae Khlong drainage approximately 94 miles north-northwest of Ratchaburi in Thailand. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Mystacoleucus chilopterus Fowler, 1935.
The genus Mystacoleucus is a small Southeast Asian cyprinid group characterised by the presence of rostral barbels and a relatively slender body plan compared to the deep-bodied trade barbs. The genus was not subject to the major Puntius split of 2012 (Pethiyagoda et al.) that reorganised much of the South and Southeast Asian barb fauna; Mystacoleucus has long been treated as a distinct genus in its own right. Older literature may list the species under alternative synonyms or as part of broader genus-level concepts, but Mystacoleucus chilopterus is the accepted current name.
Morphology
Mystacoleucus chilopterus is a slender-bodied barb reaching approximately 4.5 in in total length (FishBase) — or around 3.5 in in standard length per field measurements — making it a medium-sized member of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, more streamlined than the deep-bodied ornamental barbs of the aquarium trade.
Like other members of Mystacoleucus the species bears rostral barbels, a feature that helps distinguish the genus from barbel-less relatives. Detailed coloration data are sparse in the published literature; the fish is likely silvery-grey with the typical barb fin complement and no bold bars or spots reported. Sexual dimorphism in body shape (females rounder when gravid) is typical of the family, though specific data for this species are lacking.
Habitat
Mystacoleucus chilopterus inhabits a range of lowland freshwater environments across mainland Southeast Asia and the Malay Peninsula. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic species of medium to large rivers and flooded fields. The Seriously Fish profile adds that it also uses swiftly flowing forest streams over rock and gravel substrates, suggesting the species is tolerant of variable current regimes.
Water parameters recorded for the type locality region centre around neutral pH (approximately 7), a temperature of around 75 °F, and moderately soft water (approximately 5 dGH). In the Lower Mekong Basin the Mekong River Commission (MRC) records the species from floodplain habitats and flooded forest, habitats that are seasonally expansive and productive. This breadth of habitat use across rivers, floodplains and forest streams accounts in part for the species' wide geographic distribution.
Feeding
Mystacoleucus chilopterus is recorded as insectivorous, with aquatic insects forming the primary prey according to field data summarised by Seriously Fish. This is consistent with the diet of many medium-sized riverine cyprinids in mainland Southeast Asia, which exploit the abundant invertebrate production of flowing-water and floodplain habitats.
Beyond aquatic insects, the species likely takes other small invertebrates opportunistically, given the varied habitats it occupies — from fast rocky streams to slow floodplain water. Data on full dietary breadth remain limited.
Mating
Like all barbs, Mystacoleucus chilopterus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond transient courtship pursuit, and no parental bond forms. In courtship, males drive gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief contact events. The adhesive eggs then fall to the bottom or among available structure.
Spawning in the Mekong and associated floodplain systems is likely tied to the monsoon-driven flood pulse, which provides expanding shallow habitat, abundant food and rising temperatures that cue many tropical riverine cyprinids to spawn. Large aggregations may form during peak conditions, a strategy common in broadcast-spawning riverine barbs.
Breeding
Mystacoleucus chilopterus is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the reproductive pattern universal among barbs. Eggs are released and fertilised in the water column or over the substrate and receive no subsequent attention from either parent; adults may consume eggs given the opportunity. Spawning over gravel or among vegetation is likely, consistent with the species' use of both rocky forest streams and floodplain habitats.
No captive-breeding accounts specific to this species have been documented in the hobbyist literature, and it is not an established aquarium species. Its breeding biology is inferred from field ecology and the known pattern for the family.
In the aquarium
Mystacoleucus chilopterus is not an established aquarium species and is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. It is primarily a fish of scientific and conservation interest — a component of the diverse cyprinid assemblage of mainland Southeast Asian river systems — rather than a hobby fish.
Should specimens become available, the species' known ecology suggests it would require a spacious tank with good water flow, neutral to slightly acidic water at around 75 °F, and a diet centred on live or frozen insect larvae. As a schooling benthopelagic fish it would need to be kept in groups. Rock or gravel substrate with some current would reflect its natural stream habitat.
Conservation
Mystacoleucus chilopterus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2019), reflecting a wide distribution across the Malay Peninsula, Chao Phraya, Mae Khlong and Mekong basins and no evidence of major range-wide population decline. The Mekong River Commission's long-term fish monitoring programme (2007–2018) recorded the species as indigenous and present in Lower Mekong floodplain and river habitats.
The Mekong Basin faces growing pressure from dam construction, floodplain conversion, and seasonal flow modification — factors that affect the timing and extent of the flood pulse on which many riverine fish depend for reproduction and feeding. The species' association with flooded fields and floodplain forest makes it potentially sensitive to land-use change and hydrological disruption, even if its current status is secure. Historical records from Peninsular Malaysia (including Kenyir Reservoir) indicate the species' range extends south of the Mekong system.
