Clypeobarbus bellcrossi, the gorgeous barb, is a small cyprinid described by Jubb in 1965 from southern Africa. Like other members of the genus Clypeobarbus, it is an African barb distinct from the large Asian and pan-African Barbus assemblage, inhabiting clear streams and rivers where it feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates and plant material. Rarely seen in the trade and sparsely documented in the scientific literature, it remains a fish of regional interest whose biology and conservation status are incompletely characterised.

Clypeobarbus bellcrossi was described by R. A. Jubb in 1965. The genus Clypeobarbus is a southern and central African radiation of medium-sized barbs distinguished from the broadly defined Barbus by a combination of morphological characters including scale counts and the structure of the mouth region. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Clypeobarbus bellcrossi (Jubb, 1965), with the parenthetical authority indicating transfer from whatever original genus Jubb used at description.

The species epithet bellcrossi honours a person — almost certainly a collector or correspondent of Jubb's, following the common nineteenth- and twentieth-century practice of naming African fishes for the naturalists, hunters and administrators who gathered specimens. Beyond the original description the taxonomic literature for this species is sparse, and no major synonyms or subsequent revisions are recorded in widely accessible sources.

Morphology

Clypeobarbus bellcrossi is a small to medium-sized barb of typical cyprinid build — moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, with a slightly inferior mouth suited to picking food from the substrate and lower water column. Courting males typically display heightened colour intensity and increased activity. Adults — both parents — will readily consume their own eggs if given access to them. No information specific to the mating behaviour of this species appears in widely available sources, but the pattern described is uniform across the barb lineage and is not expected to deviate in this genus.

Breeding

As an egg-scattering cyprinid, Clypeobarbus bellcrossi produces adhesive eggs that are scattered over the substrate or among fine-leaved vegetation, with no parental care whatsoever. It does not appear to be bred commercially or distributed widely, and most aquarists are unlikely to encounter it outside of specialist African fish enthusiast circles or academic institutions maintaining living collections.

Were it available, it would be expected to suit a modestly sized aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water, a flow that reflects its likely riverine origin, and a diet of quality dry foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates. As a shoaling species it would benefit from being kept in a group. Compatibility would be best with other similarly sized, active fish of comparable temperament.

The conservation status of Clypeobarbus bellcrossi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, or if assessed, the result is not widely accessible in online databases. Many small, range-restricted African barbs occupy this data-deficient or unassessed position — known from a handful of museum specimens, rarely collected, and not subject to commercial fishery or trade pressure significant enough to drive formal evaluation.
