Taxonomy & naming
Clypeobarbus bomokandi was originally described by George S. Myers in 1924 as Barbus bomokandi, from material collected at Poko in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (then the Belgian Congo). The species was long treated as a member of the broad genus Barbus, which historically accommodated the great majority of African and Eurasian barbs. A phylogenetic revision of the African cyprinid genus Clypeobarbus (published in Ichthyological Research, 2007) rehabilitated C. bomokandi as a valid species in the genus Clypeobarbus, separated from Barbus on morphological and phylogenetic grounds. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Clypeobarbus bomokandi (Myers, 1924), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Myers's original generic placement.
An older synonym recorded in the literature is Barbus rubripinnis Nichols & Griscom, 1917, though the relationship between that name and bomokandi requires careful attention to priority. The genus name Clypeobarbus refers to the shield-like (clipeus) facial morphology that distinguishes these barbs from allied African genera. No widely used common name has been established for C. bomokandi in either the scientific or aquarium literature.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Clypeobarbus bomokandi remain sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of Clypeobarbus, it is a small to medium-bodied cyprinid with the moderately compressed, streamlined form typical of riverine African barbs. The genus is characterised by its distinctive clypeal (snout-shield) anatomy that was used to define its separation from Barbus sensu stricto in the 2007 phylogenetic revision.
Size data specific to C. bomokandi are not reported in accessible sources; the species is known primarily from type and survey material rather than from systematic morphometric study. Colouration, fin formula and other diagnostic characters can be found in the original Myers (1924) description and in the 2007 rehabilitation paper, but have not been compiled into the hobby or popular scientific literature.
Habitat
Clypeobarbus bomokandi is known from two widely separated localities within the Congo Basin: the type locality at Poko in the northeastern DRC, and the Lekoli River in the Odzala region of the Republic of Congo. Both are situated within the vast lowland rainforest and gallery-forest river network of the central Congo drainage, one of the world's largest and most biodiverse freshwater systems.
No published water-chemistry data specific to C. bomokandi are available. The Congo Basin encompasses an enormous range of habitats, from clear, fast-flowing forest streams and large turbid rivers to seasonally flooded swamp forests; the species' precise microhabitat preferences within this system are undocumented. General conditions across the central Congo lowlands tend toward soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water, consistent with the heavy rainfall and low-mineral substrates of the equatorial rainforest zone.
Feeding
No dietary studies or direct feeding observations have been published for Clypeobarbus bomokandi. African riverine barbs of comparable size and habit are typically opportunistic omnivores, exploiting small invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, worms), algae, plant material and detritus from the substrate and water column according to local availability.
Given the paucity of data, any inference about C. bomokandi's feeding ecology is extrapolated from the broader biology of the Clypeobarbus genus and African stream barbs generally. Detailed dietary information awaits field study at the species' known localities.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for Clypeobarbus bomokandi in the wild or in captivity. Like all barbs, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In this breeding strategy — universal across the barb lineage — a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over suitable substrate until eggs and milt are released together in brief, close contact.
No pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act, and neither sex holds a territory or defends a nest site. The eggs are adhesive and fall among plants or onto the substrate, after which the adults take no further interest in them. This pattern applies to the full spectrum of African barbs across genera, including Clypeobarbus.
Breeding
Clypeobarbus bomokandi has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and the species does not appear in the aquarium hobby literature or trade. Captive breeding details are therefore unavailable.
By analogy with other African riverine barbs, reproduction is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increasing day length or the onset of the rainy season — with females scattering adhesive eggs among submerged plants or over gravel and sand. Parental care is absent; the adults neither guard the eggs nor attend the larvae. Fecundity, incubation period and larval development are all unknown for this species.
In the aquarium
Clypeobarbus bomokandi is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in the trade, and no care guides or husbandry records exist for the species. Its natural range — the remote rainforest rivers of the central Congo Basin — is not a region from which aquarium fish are regularly exported, and the species' small and disjunct known distribution provides little basis for commercial collection.
Should the species ever enter the hobby, a setup reflecting its likely native habitat would be appropriate: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, subdued lighting, ample cover from plants or driftwood, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality dry foods. Until genuine care experience exists, all such recommendations remain speculative.
Conservation
Clypeobarbus bomokandi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the near-total absence of population-level information rather than a confirmed threat status. The two known localities — Poko (DRC) and the Lekoli River (Odzala, Republic of Congo) — are geographically separated, raising questions about population connectivity and actual range extent that current data cannot resolve.
The Congo Basin as a whole faces accelerating pressures: large-scale logging and agricultural conversion of the rainforest, artisanal and industrial mining with associated water pollution, and hydropower development. Odzala-Kokoua National Park provides some degree of protection to the Lekoli River population, but the Poko locality in the DRC has no equivalent protected status. Targeted field surveys are needed to determine whether C. bomokandi is genuinely rare and restricted or simply under-collected across a wider area of the central Congo drainage.
