Clypeobarbus hypsolepis is a medium-sized African barb described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1959. A member of the genus Clypeobarbus — a small group of West and Central African cyprinids distinguished by their well-developed suborbital region and relatively large scales — it inhabits river systems across tropical West Africa and remains largely unknown to the aquarium hobby. Like all barbs it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner that has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Clypeobarbus hypsolepis was described by Jacques Daget in 1959. The original description placed the species within the then broadly circumscribed genus Barbus, and it was later assigned to Clypeobarbus — a genus recognised for a cluster of West and Central African barbs that share a notably developed suborbital bone (the clypeus, giving the genus its name) and a relatively large-scaled body plan. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Clypeobarbus hypsolepis (Daget, 1959) as the valid combination, the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of the original genus.

Clypeobarbus is a modest genus whose members have historically been shuffled among Barbus, Labeobarbus and allied groupings as African cyprinid taxonomy has been revised. The genus epithet hypsolepis derives from the Greek hypso- (high) and lepis (scale), likely a reference to the species' relatively deep or prominent scalation — a common character used to separate West African barbs in early descriptions.

Morphology

Clypeobarbus hypsolepis is a moderately built barb with the typical cyprinid body plan: laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied, with a terminal mouth and no jaw teeth. The genus Clypeobarbus is characterised by a well-developed suborbital region and comparatively large scales, characters that help distinguish it from the numerous smaller-scaled Enteromius that dominate West African river ichthyofaunas.

Habitat

Feeding

Spawning in West African river barbs is typically seasonal, keyed to rising water levels and temperature changes associated with the onset of the wet season — a cue that triggers dispersal into flooded marginal areas where eggs are deposited among vegetation or over gravel and sand. Adults take no interest in the eggs or larvae after spawning.

Breeding

Clypeobarbus hypsolepis has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available to the hobby. The breeding biology is inferred from the general barb pattern: the species scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate or among plants, the eggs receive no parental attention, and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity.

For any serious attempt at captive breeding, the West African seasonal spawning trigger — a period of slightly cooler, softer water followed by warming and increased feeding, mimicking the transition into the wet season — would be the logical starting point. Hatching and larval development timelines are unknown for this species specifically, but are expected to follow the broad cyprinid pattern of hatching within one to two days at tropical temperatures and free-swimming within a few days thereafter.

Clypeobarbus hypsolepis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No established trade in this species exists, and it has not appeared in hobby literature or retailer lists in any meaningful way. The genus Clypeobarbus as a whole is almost entirely unknown outside specialist West African ichthyology.

Were specimens to become available, the species would be expected to behave as a robust, active shoaling barb suited to a large aquarium with open swimming space, neutral to slightly soft water, and water temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius. It should be kept in groups and would likely be compatible with other large, active fishes from tropical African rivers. In the absence of any documented aquarium experience, detailed husbandry recommendations cannot be given.

Conservation

Clypeobarbus hypsolepis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries no formal conservation status. The species is obscure, with limited ichthyological coverage since Daget's original 1959 description, and data on its population size, range extent, and any threats are essentially absent from the published record.
