Taxonomy & naming
Cyclocheilichthys janthochir was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1854 from specimens collected at Pontianak on the Kapuas River in western Borneo. Bleeker originally placed the fish in the genus Systomus, giving the combination Systomus janthochir (Bleeker, 1854), and it was also historically referenced under Barbus janthochir. The current valid combination, Cyclocheilichthys janthochir (Bleeker, 1854), follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al.), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the generic reassignment from Bleeker's original Systomus.
The genus Cyclocheilichthys is a moderately large Southeast Asian cyprinid lineage characterised by a distinctive lip and barbel morphology. It should not be confused with the wholesale reshuffling of Puntius by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which involved different genera; Cyclocheilichthys has its own older taxonomic history within the family Cyprinidae. The species epithet janthochir derives from Greek, most likely referring to a colour feature of the fins (iantho- = violet/purple, cheir = hand/fin).
Morphology
Cyclocheilichthys janthochir is a moderately large barb reaching up to 8 in standard length, making it substantially bigger than most aquarium barbs. It has the streamlined, fusiform body typical of river-dwelling cyprinids, with the barbels and lip structure characteristic of the genus Cyclocheilichthys.
Little detailed morphological description is readily available in the hobby literature. As a blackwater species adapted to dim, tannin-stained water, it likely exhibits the subdued colouration common among peat-swamp fishes — though the species epithet hints at some violet or purplish tinting on the fins. Sexual dimorphism has not been well documented in the available sources.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the peat-swamp forests and associated blackwater rivers of Indonesian Borneo, recorded from Kalimantan Barat and Kalimantan Tengah, with the Kapuas River at Pontianak as the type locality. It occupies one of the most chemically distinctive freshwater environments on Earth: water stained deep brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids from decomposing peat, extraordinarily soft and mineral-poor, and strongly acidic — pH values of 3.0–4.0 are recorded from Cyclocheilichthys janthochir's habitat, with a typical value around 4.0. Lighting is naturally dim beneath the forest canopy.
FishBase records a temperature of approximately 77 °F and hardness around 5 dGH, consistent with the warm, ultra-soft conditions of Sundaland peat swamps. These habitats are characterised by a near-total absence of dissolved minerals and very low conductivity — conditions sharply different from the soft-but-less-extreme streams inhabited by many other Sundaland barbs.
Feeding
In the wild, Cyclocheilichthys janthochir feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, with insects forming a substantial part of the diet. FishBase lists aquatic insects specifically among its prey. This insectivore-leaning diet is typical for a medium-to-large river barb inhabiting forested blackwater systems, where allochthonous input — invertebrates falling from overhanging vegetation — supplements in-water prey.
In the aquarium, such species generally accept a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, earthworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) alongside sinking pellets. A protein-rich diet reflecting the natural insectivorous tendency is appropriate.
Mating
Cyclocheilichthys janthochir is an egg-scattering, non-guarding cyprinid. Like all barbs, it forms no pair bond and builds no nest. When in spawning condition, males pursue gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt together in brief contact. The adhesive eggs are scattered and neither parent plays any further role.
No detailed captive-spawning records for this species appear in the available literature, and specific courtship behaviour has not been documented in the hobby press. Seasonal or rainfall-triggered spawning is plausible given the species' occurrence in lowland Bornean river systems subject to marked wet-dry seasonality.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Cyclocheilichthys janthochir are documented in the available sources, and it is not established in the aquarium trade in a way that has generated hobbyist breeding accounts. Based on the biology of the genus and family, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over a substrate or among plants, no parental care, and adults removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Replicating the extreme soft-acid blackwater conditions of this species' native habitat — pH 3.0–4.0, very low hardness, warm temperature around 77 °F — would be a prerequisite for any serious breeding attempt. The reproductive biology of this species in the wild remains poorly studied.
In the aquarium
Cyclocheilichthys janthochir is a specialist subject, rarely encountered in the trade and demanding highly specific water chemistry. Seriously Fish recommends a tank of at least 180 × 17.5 in to accommodate a species that reaches 8 in, with filtration providing four to five times the tank volume per hour in turnover. The water must replicate the extreme blackwater conditions of Kalimantan peat swamps: pH in the range of 3.0–4.0, very soft and mineral-free, warm (around 77 °F), and dimly lit. Achieving and maintaining this chemistry typically requires RO or rain water with the addition of peat extract or botanicals.
The species is gregarious and should be kept in groups of at least six. It is not a fish for a standard community aquarium — the extreme acidity required would harm most other species — and is best suited to a dedicated blackwater biotope alongside other peat-swamp specialists. Given its rarity in the trade and the demanding husbandry requirements, it is a species for experienced keepers with a particular interest in Sundaland blackwater fish.
Conservation
Cyclocheilichthys janthochir is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with a stable population trend. The species is endemic to Indonesian Borneo, restricted to peat-swamp and blackwater habitats in Kalimantan Barat and Kalimantan Tengah.
Despite the Least Concern assessment, the peat-swamp ecosystems this fish depends on are under severe and accelerating pressure. Drainage and conversion of peat swamp forest for palm oil and pulpwood plantations has destroyed vast areas of lowland Bornean habitat in recent decades, fundamentally altering hydrology, water chemistry, and the shaded forest cover that maintains the blackwater conditions. Fire — often used to clear drained peatland — compounds the damage. While Cyclocheilichthys janthochir is not a primary target of the aquarium collection trade, loss of intact peat-swamp habitat represents the principal long-term threat to this and many other Sundaland endemic fishes.
