Taxonomy & naming
Cyclocheilichthys armatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1842. The specific epithet armatus is Latin for "armed" or "armoured", likely a reference to a physical feature of the type specimen. The species is placed in the genus Cyclocheilichthys, a genus of medium to large Southeast Asian cyprinids characterised by a subterminal mouth, a rounded or fusiform body, and a preference for the larger lowland rivers of the Sunda shelf region.
The species has accumulated synonyms as it was independently described from different parts of its broad range: Cyclocheilichthys tapiensis and C. mekongensis have both been treated as synonymous. The valid combination follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which serves as the authority for names throughout this atlas. Cyclocheilichthys was not directly affected by the 2012 Pethiyagoda et al. revision that dismantled the old catch-all Puntius — the genus has been recognised separately for the larger Indochinese and Sundaic species — but older literature may list this species under alternative combinations.
Morphology
C. armatus is a moderately large barb, reaching a recorded maximum of 9 in in standard length. The body is fusiform and somewhat laterally compressed, typical of a fish that moves through open river channels and the benthopelagic zone rather than hugging the substrate or navigating dense vegetation. The mouth is subterminal, suited to picking invertebrates from the water column and substrate surface.
Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the available literature. As with many large-bodied cyprinids, females are likely fuller-bodied when gravid. Colouration in life is not well documented in the hobbyist record, consistent with a species that rarely enters the ornamental trade.
Habitat
The species inhabits freshwater rivers, streams and artificial water bodies across tropical lowland Southeast Asia. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, indicating that it moves across both mid-water and near-bottom zones — a generalist position consistent with its broad diet. It is recorded from large and medium-sized river systems including the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages in mainland Indochina, as well as the Xe Bangfai basin in Laos.
On the Sunda shelf, it occurs in Borneo, Sumatra and Java, and is also recorded from the Philippines. The water chemistry data available from Seriously Fish gives a pH range of 6.0–8.0 and temperatures of 68–79 °F, a wide envelope spanning the moderately soft, near-neutral rivers of the mainland as well as the more varied freshwaters of the Sunda islands. The species appears able to exploit a range of freshwater habitats including natural rivers and artificial impoundments.
Feeding
C. armatus is a carnivore-leaning omnivore. FishBase records its diet as zooplankton, small crustaceans, chironomids and insect larvae. Seriously Fish corroborates this, noting a preference for insects, insect larvae and crustaceans in the wild, as well as occasional consumption of fish fry. This diet places the species in the mid-trophic generalist category typical of schooling riverine cyprinids that exploit seasonal and spatial variation in invertebrate abundance.
In the aquarium, Seriously Fish notes that the species prefers live or frozen foods — consistent with its invertebrate-heavy wild diet — though it may accept dry foods in time. Feeding takes place from mid-water to the benthic zone, matching its benthopelagic lifestyle.
Mating
Cyclocheilichthys armatus, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental bond is formed and no territory is defended beyond the brief act of spawning. Seriously Fish records that the species migrates into seasonally flooded zones at the end of the wet season to spawn — a broadcast-spawning strategy common among larger riverine cyprinids, where rising waters and the temporary abundance of flooded vegetation and food provide the cue and the habitat for reproduction.
Driving behaviour typical of cyprinids — where males pursue and press against gravid females to trigger simultaneous release of eggs and milt — is expected but not described in detail in the available literature for this species. Adults provide no care after spawning.
Breeding
Seriously Fish notes that C. armatus has not been bred in aquaria. In the wild, spawning is associated with the end of the wet season, when adults move into flooded zones at the margins of rivers and across inundated floodplains. This seasonal migratory spawning pattern, triggered by flooding, temperature cues and daylength, is typical of larger Southeast Asian cyprinids and is difficult or impossible to replicate in a standard aquarium setting.
Eggs are scattered over the substrate and vegetation of flooded habitats and receive no parental care. Larvae and juveniles likely develop in the shallow, food-rich waters of the floodplain before returning to main channels as water levels recede. The absence of captive breeding records means that reproductive details such as clutch size, incubation period and larval diet are not documented.
In the aquarium
C. armatus is not a common aquarium species and is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. At up to 9 in standard length, it requires a large aquarium — a minimum of several hundred litres — to be kept comfortably, and its schooling and semi-migratory nature in the wild mean that a single specimen or a very small group is unlikely to thrive or exhibit natural behaviour.
Seriously Fish recommends a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods. The species is recorded from a broad pH range (6.0–8.0) and temperatures of 68–79 °F, suggesting reasonable tolerance of varied water chemistry. Its primary appeal is to specialist keepers of large Southeast Asian cyprinids rather than to the general community-fish hobby. There is no documented captive breeding and little accumulated husbandry knowledge in the hobby literature.
Conservation
Cyclocheilichthys armatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (FishBase cites an assessment dated 13 January 2019). Its wide distribution — spanning five major river systems across mainland Southeast Asia and islands of the Sunda shelf and the Philippines — means it is unlikely to face population-level risk from any single localised threat.
Nonetheless, the freshwater biodiversity of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins faces substantial pressure from dam construction, floodplain drainage, agricultural pollution and fisheries offtake. A species that spawns in seasonal floodplains is particularly vulnerable to hydrological changes that interrupt inundation cycles. At the regional scale, accelerating development of the Mekong mainstream and its tributaries warrants ongoing monitoring of the large-bodied cyprinids that depend on intact seasonal flood pulses for reproduction.
