Cyclocheilichthys furcatus is a large, potamodromous barb of the middle Mekong basin, reaching up to 23.5 in in standard length and inhabiting the main river channel and its major tributaries from the Thai-Laos border south to the Tonlé Sap lake system in Cambodia. Distinguished within its genus by bifurcate lateral-line tubes — the feature that gives the species its epithet — it is a benthopelagic schooling fish of fast-flowing lowland rivers that migrates seasonally into flooded riparian forests and small lateral streams during the high-water period. With moderate commercial importance as a food fish and a known sensitivity to mainstream dam development, it sits at the intersection of the Mekong's biodiversity and its infrastructure pressures.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyclocheilichthys furcatus was described by Sontirat in 1989 and is recognised as a valid species under that authority by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing reference for valid names. The species belongs to the genus Cyclocheilichthys, a South and Southeast Asian lineage of medium-to-large barbs characterised by their round-lipped oral disc and, in several members, distinctive modifications to the lateral-line canal system.

The genus Cyclocheilichthys was not affected by the broad Puntius reclassification carried out by Pethiyagoda et al. in 2012, which divided the old catch-all Puntius into numerous new genera for smaller Indian and Sri Lankan barbs. Cyclocheilichthys had already been established as a separate lineage for the larger Southeast Asian species. C. furcatus is therefore not a former Puntius; its taxonomic history centres on its placement within Cyclocheilichthys and its distinction from close relatives such as C. repasson and C. apogon on the basis of meristics and lateral-line morphology.

Morphology

Cyclocheilichthys furcatus is a large barb, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 23.5 in — large for the family and placing it among the biggest members of its genus. The body is elongate and fusiform, suited to the fast-moving river sections it inhabits. The species possesses four barbels, a characteristic of the genus, and bears a very long, robust dorsal spine. Gill-raker counts run to 12–14 on the first arch.

The defining morphological character is the bifurcate, or forked, lateral-line tubes — the feature that inspired the specific epithet furcatus. This distinguishes it from related Cyclocheilichthys species and is visible on close inspection of the lateral-line pores along the flank. Like other large barbs of fast rivers, the fish is muscular and streamlined, reflecting a life spent in strong currents.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Mekong basin, occurring from the middle Mekong along the Thai-Laos border southward through Laos and Cambodia as far as the Tonlé Sap lake-river system. FishBase notes that it does not occur in impoundments, a telling absence that reflects its dependence on free-flowing, oxygenated river conditions. It is a benthopelagic fish of the main river channel and the larger tributaries.

C. furcatus is potamodromous, undertaking seasonal migrations within fresh water. During the high-water period it moves laterally into flooded riparian forests and small streams — a feeding and possibly spawning migration — before retreating to the main river as waters recede. Water conditions in the middle Mekong lowlands are warm tropical, typically in the range of 72–81 °F, with near-neutral to slightly acidic pH and moderate hardness consistent with large, turbid lowland rivers rather than the soft blackwater of Sundaland peat swamps.

Feeding

No published diet study specific to C. furcatus is recorded in the accessible literature, but its congener C. repasson is documented as a predatory feeder on insects, crustaceans, and molluscs, with some algae and plant material also taken. Given the shared genus and river ecology, a similar invertebrate-dominated omnivory is likely for C. furcatus — benthic invertebrates, drifting insects, and opportunistic plant material picked from the substrate and lower water column.

The species' large size and potamodromous life history suggest that feeding intensity peaks during the seasonal flood pulse, when prey diversity and abundance in lateral flood forests and shallow margins is at its highest. This seasonal feeding migration is a key part of the ecological role played by large barbs in the Mekong's floodplain system.

Mating

Like all barbs, Cyclocheilichthys furcatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. In the wild, large riverine barbs typically engage in seasonal broadcast spawning tied to the flood pulse — rising water temperatures, increasing flow, and access to lateral habitats trigger ripeness and aggregation. During courtship, males pursue gravid females, and eggs and milt are released over the substrate or among vegetation.

No pair bond is formed, and adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning. The potamodromous movement into flooded riparian forests during the rainy season may serve partly as a spawning migration into safer, food-rich lateral habitats where eggs and early larvae can develop with some protection from the main-channel current.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Cyclocheilichthys furcatus are documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, which is unsurprising for a species that reaches 23.5 in SL, lacks an established presence in the ornamental trade, and requires the seasonal cues of a large tropical river system to trigger spawning. In the wild, reproduction is presumed to follow the flood-pulse pattern characteristic of large Mekong barbs: spawning occurs as waters rise and flood lateral forests, with eggs scattered over submerged vegetation and substrate.

As an egg-scattering barb, there is no parental care of any kind. Eggs and larvae are left to develop among the flooded vegetation and organic debris of the riparian zone, surviving by dispersal and sheer numbers rather than parental defence. The species is reported under minor commercial fishery use, which implies natural reproduction is sufficient to sustain populations under current — though threatened — conditions.

In the aquarium

Cyclocheilichthys furcatus is not an aquarium species in any meaningful sense. At a maximum of 23.5 in SL it far exceeds the practical limits of home or even public aquaria, and there is no record of it entering the ornamental trade. It is a fish of flowing tropical rivers and is accounted for in the ichthyological and fisheries literature, not the hobbyist literature.

For context, a congener sometimes seen in specialised large-barb collections is C. repasson, which reaches somewhat smaller sizes. Any hobbyist drawn to Cyclocheilichthys by the genus's biological interest would be better served by smaller members of the group. C. furcatus itself is best appreciated as a component of the Mekong's large-fish community, ecologically significant but unsuited to captivity.

Conservation

Cyclocheilichthys furcatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 19 February 2011. The species is a Mekong endemic, and its relatively restricted range makes it more vulnerable to basin-wide threats than widespread multi-basin species. The IUCN assessment identifies three principal threats: planned mainstream Mekong dams, overfishing, and pollution.

Mainstream dams are the most structurally serious concern. As a potamodromous species that does not occur in impoundments, C. furcatus depends on free passage along the river for its seasonal migrations. Each new dam that interrupts the middle Mekong's flow effectively walls off portions of the habitat and migration corridor this species requires. The Mekong mainstream dam cascade under development since the 2010s has proceeded at pace since the IUCN assessment, meaning the ecological situation is likely more pressured today than the 2011 LC rating suggests. A future reassessment may warrant an elevated threat category.
