Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora microcephala was described by Thomas C. Jerdon in 1849, making it one of the earlier-described members of the diverse genus Rasbora. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora microcephala (Jerdon, 1849), the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being assigned to Rasbora.
The genus Rasbora has undergone considerable taxonomic revision since the late twentieth century. Kottelat and collaborators carved out several genera from what was once a catch-all assemblage: Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides were all separated, reducing Rasbora to a more tightly defined core group. The species remains in Rasbora under current arrangements. The specific epithet microcephala is Latinised Greek meaning 'small-headed', a reference to the proportionally small head relative to body length that helps distinguish this species.
FishBase records 29–32 pored scales along the lateral line and notes that the axial stripe is posteriorly broad but becomes narrower and less distinct anteriorly — a feature useful for distinguishing it from congeners encountered in the same waters.
Morphology
Rasbora microcephala is a slim, fusiform cyprinid reaching approximately 3 in in standard length, which is relatively large for a genus that otherwise contains several miniature species. The body is laterally compressed and elongate, with a small, proportionally reduced head that gives the species its name.
The most diagnostic external feature is the horizontal dark lateral stripe running along the midflank. FishBase notes the stripe is broad in the posterior portion of the body and narrows toward the head, in contrast to species with a uniformly thick or uniformly narrow stripe. The flanks are otherwise silvery, the dorsum olive to light brown, and the fins are clear or faintly pigmented. With 29–32 pored lateral-line scales, scale counts provide a useful supplementary character when distinguishing it from similar-looking Rasbora species in the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka.
Habitat
Rasbora microcephala is a freshwater species of the Indian subcontinent, distributed across India and Sri Lanka. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, reflecting a fish that occupies the lower-to-middle water column rather than the surface, in contrast to many surface-oriented rasboras.
The species is associated with slow-moving or still freshwater habitats — streams, river margins and bodies of water with gentle current — where it can form schools. Aquarium sources indicate that its natural waters tend to be soft, slightly acidic and low in dissolved minerals, consistent with the lowland drainages and hill streams of peninsular India and Sri Lanka where humidity and leaf litter commonly produce a mild tannin influence. Preferred water temperatures are given as 75–81 °F, and pH in the range 5.0–6.8, with hardness around 5–12 °dH — broadly typical of the soft, warm tropical streams of the region.
Feeding
Like most members of the genus Rasbora, R. microcephala is an omnivorous micropredator in the wild. Small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and zooplankton — likely form the bulk of the natural diet, supplemented with algal material, organic detritus and small plant fragments carried in the current.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a broad range of foods. Good-quality micro-pellets and fine flakes provide an adequate staple, while live and frozen items such as daphnia, micro-worms and baby brine shrimp support breeding condition and natural foraging behaviour. Given its benthopelagic tendency, sinking or mid-water foods are more appropriate than surface-floating preparations.
Mating
Rasbora microcephala is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like other members of the genus Rasbora, it forms no pair bond, builds no nest and provides no parental care at any stage. Courtship consists of a driving male closely pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or open water, the two fish pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
Spawning is typically stimulated by warm water, soft acidic conditions and the presence of fine-leaved plants, moss or root structures among which eggs can fall or lodge. The non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs are scattered broadly rather than deposited at a specific site, and adults will readily consume eggs they encounter after spawning.
Breeding
Breeding Rasbora microcephala in the aquarium follows the standard approach for small egg-scattering rasboras. A separate shallow tank conditioned to soft, acidic, warm water (pH 5.5–6.5, around 79–81 °F) with a fine-leaved plant mat or Java moss layer allows spawning to proceed with some protection for the eggs from being consumed.
Well-conditioned adults are introduced in a ratio of one or two males per female, and spawning typically occurs in early morning. Because adults are not guarded and will eat eggs and fry, the parent fish should be removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at tropical temperatures; the larvae become free-swimming a few days later and accept infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care occurs at any stage.
In the aquarium
Rasbora microcephala is a peaceful schooling fish suited to a well-planted community aquarium with other small, non-aggressive species. Its preference for soft, slightly acidic water at 75–81 °F and low to moderate hardness (5–12 °dH, pH 5.0–6.8) should guide water chemistry choices; keeping it in hard, alkaline tap water without adjustment will stress the fish over time.
A densely planted tank with subdued lighting, some areas of open swimming space and gentle filtration that avoids strong turbulence best replicates its natural habitat. Dark substrate and the addition of dried leaf litter or alder cones will lower pH naturally and bring out the fish's colouration. Schools of at least six individuals are recommended to maintain natural behaviour and reduce individual stress. Suitable tankmates include other small, soft-water cyprinids, small tetras, dwarf rasboras and peaceful bottom-dwellers such as small Corydoras or Otocinclus.
Conservation
Rasbora microcephala is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment completed in August 2019. Its distribution across India and Sri Lanka gives it a reasonably broad native range, and no significant range-wide decline has been documented.
Nevertheless, its association with soft, clean, slow-moving or lentic freshwater habitats in South Asia places it in the path of pressures common across the region: agricultural runoff raising nutrient and pesticide loads, dam and irrigation infrastructure altering flow regimes, deforestation of catchments destabilising water chemistry, and urban expansion reducing the extent and quality of lowland freshwater habitat. As a fish of relatively clean, acidic drainages, populations in heavily modified or polluted catchments may face localised decline even where the overall species remains secure. Collection for the aquarium trade appears to be a minor pressure relative to habitat change.
