Poropuntius krempfi was described by Pellegrin and Chevey in 1934. The genus Poropuntius was reviewed comprehensively by Roberts (1998) in a study that clarified the distribution and relationships of these Southeast Asian cyprinid brook barbs across the Mekong and adjacent basins, documenting that the greatest diversity of Poropuntius occurs in the Mekong drainage. Roberts's treatment recognised the genus as a coherent assemblage of slender-bodied Indochinese and Yunnan barbs distinct from the sprawling catch-all Puntius sensu lato.
Like most Asian barbs whose names carry older authorities, Poropuntius krempfi was placed at various times under the broad genus Barbus or Puntius before generic revisions redrew the boundaries of these groups. The current valid combination follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority used here for all nomenclatural matters. The genus name Poropuntius combines poro- (from Greek, pore or pit — likely alluding to the well-developed lateral-line pores characteristic of the group) with Puntius, the parent barb genus.

Should specimens become available, the care requirements would be expected to align with those of other medium-sized Indochinese river barbs: a spacious aquarium with good filtration and moderate current, tropical temperatures, broadly neutral to slightly soft water, and a diet of varied prepared and live foods.
Its slender, streamlined body suggests it would be an active swimmer in need of a long tank with open swimming lanes. Given how little is known of its behaviour, keeping it in the company of robust, similarly sized cyprinids of similar origin would be a reasonable starting point.
