Taxonomy & naming
Mystacoleucus ectypus was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000. It belongs to the genus Mystacoleucus, a group of Southeast Asian cyprinids characterised by a whiskered or moustached appearance suggested by the distinctive mouth structure. The generic name combines the Greek mystax (moustache, whisker) and leukos (white), while the species epithet ectypus derives from the Latin for "in relief" or "standing out", likely referring to a diagnostic feature of the type specimen.
The genus Mystacoleucus has historically been treated as part of the broader assemblage of Asian barbs once lumped under Puntius or the older Barbus, and remains within the family Cyprinidae. Kottelat's 2000 description placed this species within Mystacoleucus on the basis of characters that distinguish it from related taxa in the Mekong drainage.
Morphology
Mystacoleucus ectypus is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. It has the streamlined, fusiform body plan typical of a pelagic river barb adapted to flowing water, with a compressed flanks and a mouth suited to mid-water feeding. As with other Mystacoleucus, the mouth region gives the fish the characteristic whiskered appearance from which the genus takes its name.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are limited in the published literature accessible to hobbyists. The body shape and size place it broadly in the medium barb category, comparable to other current-loving cyprinids of the Mekong mainstream.
Habitat
The species is native to the middle Mekong basin with a range centred on the Khorat Plateau, an endemic region of northeastern Thailand and central Laos. Confirmed drainages include the Mun and Songkhram watersheds in Thailand and the Nam Mang and Nam Kou drainages in Laos — all tributaries of the middle Mekong.
Within these systems, Mystacoleucus ectypus occupies the mainstream of large rivers and medium-sized tributary channels, where it is described as benthopelagic — associated with the lower water column over substrates of rock and gravel. Water conditions in the middle Mekong lowlands are broadly neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard, and warm throughout the year; Seriously Fish records a reference chemistry of pH 7.0, 77 °F, and 8 dGH for this species.
Feeding
Mystacoleucus ectypus is recorded as an omnivore. Like other barbs of large river systems, it likely takes a combination of small aquatic invertebrates, organic detritus, algae, and plant material from the substrate and the lower water column. Its benthopelagic lifestyle over rocky and gravelly riverbeds is consistent with foraging on benthic invertebrates and aufwuchs.
Detailed stomach-content analyses are not available in the hobbyist or popular literature. In the aquarium, related omnivorous barbs of comparable size accept high-quality dried foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates and some vegetable matter.
Mating
As a member of the family Cyprinidae, Mystacoleucus ectypus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in keeping with the reproductive strategy universal across barbs. There is no nest construction, no territory held beyond a brief courtship pursuit, and no pair bond. Spawning is initiated when a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate, the two fish releasing eggs and milt together in brief, pressing contact.
The adhesive eggs sink to the substrate after release. Neither parent remains to guard the spawn, and adults are liable to consume eggs given the opportunity. Courtship colour and activity intensify during the spawning period as males compete for access to ripe females.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Mystacoleucus ectypus in the aquarium is not documented in the available literature, and the species is not commonly kept or bred in the hobby. By analogy with other benthopelagic, rock-and-gravel barbs of Southeast Asian river mainstems, spawning would be expected to occur over gravel substrates, with eggs scattered and left unattended.
Large river barbs of this type are typically seasonal broadcast spawners in the wild, responding to water-level and temperature cues associated with the Mekong's monsoonal flood pulse. There is no parental care at any stage; eggs and larvae develop independently in the substrate or drift in the current.
In the aquarium
Mystacoleucus ectypus is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. Its ecology — a pelagic species of large river mainstems over rock and gravel — makes it a poor fit for most home aquaria, and it has not been selectively bred or kept in quantity. Hobbyist records and husbandry data are essentially absent.
Any aquarist who did obtain this species would need to provide a spacious, well-oxygenated, strongly filtered tank with a current, a gravel or rock substrate, and neutral, moderately hard water around 77 °F to reflect its natural habitat in the middle Mekong. It should be kept in groups, as is appropriate for a schooling cyprinid.
Conservation
Mystacoleucus ectypus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 25 February 2011. Although the species has a restricted range confined to the Khorat Plateau drainages of the middle Mekong, its populations were considered stable at the time of assessment and no significant threats warranting a higher threat category were identified.
The middle Mekong basin faces ongoing pressures from hydropower dam construction, which alters the flood pulse and sediment dynamics that large-river barbs depend on, as well as habitat modification from agriculture and water extraction on the Khorat Plateau. As a Khorat endemic with a relatively narrow range, Mystacoleucus ectypus warrants monitoring as development in the Mun and Songkhram catchments continues.
