Labeobarbus rhinoceros, the rhinofish, is a large East African cyprinid native to the Athi and Tana River systems of Kenya. Described by Copley in 1938 from the Athi River, it is one of the bigger barbs of coastal East Africa, reaching around 13.5 in in standard length and recorded to 2.2 kg. An omnivore of the river benthos, it is classified as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, reflecting how little focused study has been done on its population status across its two known river basins.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus rhinoceros was originally described as Barbus rhinoceros by Copley in 1938, with a type locality in the Athi River, Kenya; type specimens are held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1936.12.22.35–39). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus rhinoceros (Copley, 1938), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Barbus into Labeobarbus. The species is placed in the subfamily Torinae.

Lévêque and Daget (1984) listed Barbus mariae Holly, 1929 as a synonym; whether that assignment stands under modern review is not confirmed in available sources, but the synonymy is recorded in the Catalog of Fishes. The epithet rhinoceros — Latin and Greek for "nose-horn" — may refer to some feature of the snout, though the precise morphological basis Copley had in mind is not documented in the available literature.

The genus Labeobarbus groups large African riverine barbs related to the "yellowfish" complex of southern and East Africa. Many of these species were formerly lumped under Barbus, a catch-all genus progressively dismantled since the early 2000s as phylogenetic work resolved African and Asian barb lineages.

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 13.5 in and a maximum weight of 2.2 kg for Labeobarbus rhinoceros, placing it among the larger barbs of the East African freshwater fauna. The species is assigned a trophic level of 3.2 (±0.5), consistent with an omnivorous to broadly carnivorous diet.

Detailed morphological description of L. rhinoceros is sparse in widely accessible sources. As a Labeobarbus it is expected to share the robust, fusiform body plan typical of large African riverine barbs: a deep, moderately compressed body, well-developed scales, a subterminal to inferior mouth suited to bottom foraging, and barbels at the corners of the mouth. Specific colour pattern, fin-ray counts, and other diagnostic characters are not fully documented in the sources available for this article.

Habitat

The species is endemic to two Kenyan river systems: the Athi River and the Tana River, both draining eastward from the central highlands to the Indian Ocean coast. The trophic level and the general ecology of large Labeobarbus elsewhere in Africa suggest an affinity for riverine reaches with gravel or rocky substrates, good flow, and adequate oxygen. Feeding

A trophic level of 3.2 places Labeobarbus rhinoceros in the omnivore-to-low-carnivore range. Large Labeobarbus across Africa typically exploit a broad diet that shifts with age and season — juveniles take fine invertebrates and detritus, while adults add larger invertebrates, algae, riparian material, and sometimes small fish or carrion. The rhinofish is likely to follow a similar pattern given its size and river environment.

Mating

Like all barbs, Labeobarbus rhinoceros is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no nest is built, and neither parent guards eggs or larvae. In large African riverine barbs, spawning is typically seasonal and cued by rising water levels associated with the rains, when fish may migrate upstream to shallower gravel beds or riffle sections to broadcast eggs.

Courting males pursue gravid females through the current or over suitable substrate, and eggs and milt are released together during brief physical contact. The adhesive eggs settle among gravel or coarse substrate, where they are left entirely to chance. Specific observations of courtship behaviour in L. rhinoceros have not been published in sources available for this article.

Breeding

Labeobarbus rhinoceros has not been recorded as bred in captivity in the available literature, and detailed data on its reproductive biology — fecundity, spawning season, egg size, or larval development — are not documented in the sources consulted here. Labeobarbus rhinoceros is not an established aquarium fish. Its maximum size of over 13.5 in SL and weight of more than 2 kg place it firmly in the category of large display or public-aquarium species rather than home fishkeeping. It is a rare species in the trade, and no widely available husbandry accounts have been located.

For aquarists with facilities for very large fish, the general requirements of large East African riverine barbs would apply: a very spacious tank with strong filtration, good water movement and oxygenation, neutral to slightly alkaline water reflecting the East African highland river environment, and a varied diet. FishBase records it as a gamefish in Kenya, where it may be targeted by anglers on the Athi and Tana systems.

Conservation

Labeobarbus rhinoceros is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2006. Data Deficient reflects an absence of sufficient information to assign a threat category, not necessarily that the species is safe; it indicates that its population size, trends, and the magnitude of pressures on it are not adequately known.

Both the Athi and Tana rivers face significant and growing pressures: water abstraction for agriculture and Nairobi's expanding population, damming and impoundment, pollution from agricultural runoff and urban wastewater, and the general degradation of riparian zones. For a species known only from these two river systems and recorded as a gamefish, collection pressure may also be a factor. A formal population assessment would be needed to determine whether L. rhinoceros warrants a threatened category; given the state of its river habitats, a precautionary approach seems warranted.
