Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius cadenati was originally described as Barbus cadenati by Jacques Daget in 1962, from type material collected in the Konkouré River, Guinea. The genus Barbus as historically conceived was a vast and polyphyletic assemblage, and following the reorganisation of African cyprinids, the species was transferred to Enteromius Cope, 1867 — the genus that now accommodates the bulk of the small, African-stream barbs. The World Register of Marine Species and FishBase both carry the valid name as Enteromius cadenati (Daget, 1962).
The species epithet honours Jean Cadenat (1908–1992), a prominent French ichthyologist at the Institut français de recherche scientifique pour le développement en coopération (ORSTOM) who made substantial contributions to the taxonomy of West African fishes. Naming a taxon for him was a natural choice for Daget, who worked alongside Cadenat and shared a close professional relationship with him.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum size of 3 in standard length for Enteromius cadenati, placing it among the smaller members of the African Enteromius assemblage. Beyond its size and its membership in the genus, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the available literature — a situation not unusual for single-basin West African endemics that have received little study since their original description.
As a member of Enteromius it is expected to be a slender to moderately deep-bodied cyprinid with the typical small barb form: a subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and plant matter from the substrate, a single dorsal fin, and paired pectoral and pelvic fins suited to precise movement in flowing water. Further examination of museum material from the Konkouré basin would be needed to characterise any diagnostic colour pattern or scale meristics reliably.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Konkouré River basin in Guinea, West Africa. The Konkouré rises in the Fouta Djallon massif — a rugged highland region of Guinea that serves as a major water tower for rivers draining toward the Atlantic coast — and supports a range of freshwater habitats from upland rocky streams to broader lowland channels.
The IUCN assessment notes that the species inhabits freshwater streams within this basin. Guinea's inland waters are predominantly soft to moderately mineralised, with temperatures typical of tropical West African lowland and mid-elevation rivers. The basin is subject to seasonal rainfall patterns that drive marked wet-season spates and dry-season low flows, creating a dynamic hydrological environment for resident fish populations.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Enteromius cadenati have not been published in the sources available, which is common for poorly-studied endemic stream barbs. By analogy with other small Enteromius from comparable West African habitats, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, foraging on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — together with algae, plant material, and organic detritus picked from the stream bed and submerged surfaces.
The short-bodied, terminal to subterminal mouth typical of small barbs is well suited to this kind of benthic and near-benthic grazing across varied substrates. In the streams of the Fouta Djallon foothills, prey availability shifts substantially between the high-water and low-water seasons, and resident fishes are generally opportunistic enough to exploit whatever is most abundant at a given time.
Mating
Enteromius cadenati has not been studied in detail in the field or in captivity with respect to its reproductive behaviour. As a member of the barb clade it is a non-guarding, egg-scattering spawner — the universal reproductive mode across Enteromius and the broader barb assemblage. No parental care of any kind is recorded or expected for this or any related species.
In courtship, males in breeding condition pursue gravid females through the stream environment — over the substrate, among marginal vegetation, or around root masses — pressing close alongside them to release eggs and milt simultaneously. The burst is brief, the pair separates, and no territory, nest, or bond is maintained afterward.
Breeding
Reproduction in Enteromius cadenati follows the egg-scattering pattern common to all barbs: spawning adults release adhesive eggs over the substrate or among aquatic vegetation, and the eggs receive no further attention from either parent. The sticky eggs settle on hard surfaces or become lodged among plant material and hatch without supervision; larvae must fend for themselves from the outset.
The species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby and there are no published accounts of captive breeding. Seasonal hydrology in the Konkouré basin likely regulates breeding activity in the wild, with rising water temperatures and flooding associated with the onset of the West African rainy season probably serving as spawning cues — a pattern seen widely among West African small barbs.
In the aquarium
Enteromius cadenati is not known to be present in the aquarium hobby. It is a narrowly endemic species confined to a single river basin in Guinea, with no established trade collection and no reported captive populations. Unlike the small number of West African barbs that have entered the ornamental trade, this species remains essentially unknown outside specialist ichthyological circles.
Should it ever become available, its care requirements would likely align with those of other small, stream-adapted West African barbs: clean, well-oxygenated water of moderate depth, soft to mildly hard chemistry reflecting its highland-stream origin, a tropical temperature range, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality prepared foods. Data sparse.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Enteromius cadenati as Vulnerable in its 2022.2 assessment (taxon ID 182296). The Vulnerable listing reflects the species' extremely restricted range — it is known only from the Konkouré basin in Guinea — combined with documented threats of habitat degradation and water extraction within that catchment.
The Konkouré River is subject to hydroelectric development; the Garafiri Dam, completed in 1999, altered the hydrology of the main stem. Agricultural encroachment, deforestation of riparian corridors, and water abstraction for irrigation and domestic use compound the pressure on stream habitats within the basin. Guinea's freshwater endemic fauna is poorly surveyed, and additional undiscovered populations of this species cannot be ruled out, but until systematic surveys of the basin's tributaries are completed, the known range remains small and the conservation prognosis guarded.
