Epiplatys guineensis is a small, non-annual West African panchax described by Romand in 1994 from the middle Konkouré river basin of Guinea. Endemic to this single drainage system, it inhabits the permanent, forested freshwaters of coastal West Africa and was assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable in 2020 owing to the restricted extent of its range and ongoing habitat degradation within the Konkouré system. In the aquarium it is notable for its ease of breeding — a vigorous mop-spawner capable of scattering adhesive eggs across plants and equipment with little encouragement — and for a hardiness and longevity unusual even among the typically robust non-annual killifishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys guineensis was described by the French ichthyologist Raymond Romand in 1994 from material collected in the middle Konkouré river basin, Guinea, West Africa. The species description, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, represents the original and sole formal account of the taxon, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Epiplatys guineensis Romand, 1994 with the type locality in the Konkouré drainage. Because Romand is the first describer, the authority is presented without parentheses.

The genus Epiplatys is the largest of the West African panchax genera and belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae (sometimes treated within the broader Aplocheilidae sensu lato). It encompasses the non-annual, surface-oriented panchaxes of sub-Saharan West and Central Africa, distinguished from the annual Nothobranchius and Fundulopanchax by their permanent-water life history and plant-spawning reproductive strategy. The species epithet guineensis is a Latin geographical adjective meaning 'of Guinea', indicating the country of the type locality.

The reference work Killi-Data (Huber, 1996) provides distributional context for E. guineensis alongside its congeners, noting its affiliation with species of the E. fasciolatus group in the region. The taxonomy within Epiplatys remains an active area of study, and the limits of this species with respect to closely related coastal Guinea endemics have not been subjected to molecular revision.

Morphology

Epiplatys guineensis reaches a maximum total length of 3 in (FishBase), typical for a mid-sized member of the genus. The body form is the characteristic Epiplatys shape: moderately slender and slightly dorsoventrally flattened toward the head, with the mouth pointing sharply upward — an adaptation for surface feeding. The dorsal fin is set far back, roughly above the anal fin, placing both fins close to the caudal peduncle and giving the fish the elongated, torpedo-like silhouette common to the panchaxes.

Males are more vividly coloured than females, with the caudal fin displaying a yellow margin — a diagnostic character noted in hobbyist accounts. The flanks show the banded or reticulate patterning typical of the genus, consistent with the species' affiliation to the fasciolatus group, which tends toward dark lateral banding on a lighter ground. Females are plainer, more uniformly coloured, and rounder-bellied when gravid. The sexual dichromatism is marked enough to make sexing straightforward once fish approach adult size.

Habitat

Epiplatys guineensis is endemic to the Konkouré river basin in the Republic of Guinea, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. This is a relatively short, rainfall-fed coastal drainage that flows from the Fouta Djallon highlands to the sea near Conakry. The species inhabits the permanent freshwaters of this system — forested stream margins, shaded pools, and slow-flowing reaches where surface vegetation and overhanging riparian cover are present. It is a benthopelagic, non-migratory species that occupies the upper water column near the surface, consistent with the surface-oriented feeding posture and the upturned mouth.

Water conditions in the Konkouré lowlands are broadly neutral; hobbyist sources record a temperature range of 72–81 °F and near-neutral pH, reflecting the relatively buffered waters of the Guinea highlands' forested footzone. The species is not a blackwater acid-specialist, distinguishing it from some more westerly or equatorial Epiplatys that occupy more tannic, low-pH forest streams. FishBase lists the temperature range as 72–79 °F.

As a permanent-water species, E. guineensis is not adapted to survive seasonal desiccation. Its habitat — permanent streams within a relatively small drainage basin — makes it vulnerable to any change in water availability, riparian deforestation, or catchment modification.

Feeding

Like most Epiplatys, E. guineensis is a surface-oriented predator. The upturned mouth and forward-set eyes are adapted for taking insects, invertebrate larvae, and small organisms at or just below the water surface. In the wild, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — including fallen insects and emerging larvae — form the core of the diet in the forested stream habitats it occupies.

In captivity the fish is straightforward to feed. It accepts live and frozen invertebrates (Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, small earthworms) readily, and will take high-quality small floating pellets and micro-granules once acclimatised. Feeding at or near the surface suits its natural foraging posture. Its small size means food items should be appropriately scaled; large chunks are ignored or wasted.

Mating

Epiplatys guineensis is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Unlike the annual species of African savannahs, it does not undergo a diapausing egg stage buried in dry substrate; instead, pairs deposit adhesive eggs individually onto fine-leaved plants, moss, floating spawning mops, roots, and other submerged or near-surface structures over extended periods. Spawning is not a concentrated seasonal event but an ongoing, low-intensity process characteristic of permanent-water killifishes.

Male display involves the characteristic lateral spread and fin-flaring common to Epiplatys: males are territorial toward one another and dominant males may chase subordinates, but the species is otherwise peaceful with dissimilar species. Hobbyist accounts describe males as aggressive only toward conspecific males, with females and heterospecifics generally unharmed. The yellow-margined caudal fin of the male is likely important in intraspecific signalling during courtship.

Breeding

In an aquarium, E. guineensis breeds prolifically and is rated as very easy. The pair suspend adhesive eggs singly in spawning mops, clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or among surface roots. Eggs are small, firm, and water-incubated — there is no diapause and no peat-moss incubation phase. Under conditions of approximately 75–79 °F and neutral water, eggs hatch in around 10–14 days, and the fry are free-swimming and feeding almost immediately.

Hobbyist sources note that the species can spread eggs onto plants and aquarium equipment rapidly, and individuals kept together are capable of generating large numbers of fry with minimal intervention. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria or commercial micro-food for the first days, graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii and Daphnia as they grow. Growth is reportedly rapid when fry are raised in isolation from adults, who will eat small offspring given the opportunity.

Broodstock conditioning on varied live and frozen foods, a well-planted or well-mopped tank, and partial water changes to simulate light rainfall are sufficient to trigger and sustain spawning. The ease and productivity of breeding make this species a good introduction to non-annual West African killifishes.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys guineensis is described by hobbyist sources as one of the more durable and forgiving non-annual killifishes. It tolerates a wider range of temperature and pH than many members of the family, survives brief periods of reduced feeding, and is long-lived relative to annual species. Despite an IUCN Vulnerable status in the wild, it has been maintained in killifish collections for years and is available through specialist breeders and killifish societies.

A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or a small group. The tank should have a tight-fitting lid — like all killifishes, E. guineensis is an accomplished jumper and will escape through any gap. Fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or floating spawning mops are essential for breeding but also provide cover and reduce stress. Water temperature of 72–79 °F and near-neutral pH (6.5–7.5) are appropriate; the species is not demanding about hardness.

Males should be kept one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough to allow genuine separation of territories; female-to-male ratios of two or three to one reduce the pressure on any individual female. The species is otherwise peaceful with dissimilar tankmates of appropriate size, though as a surface predator it will eat fry and very small fish. It is not commonly available in the general trade; obtaining specimens typically requires contact with national or international killifish associations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys guineensis as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) in April 2020, reflecting its very restricted range. The species is known only from the middle Konkouré river basin in Guinea; the extent of occurrence is small enough that any significant deterioration of habitat within this drainage could threaten the entire known population. The Konkouré, while one of Guinea's larger coastal rivers, flows through a region experiencing increasing pressure from agricultural expansion, artisanal mining activity, and hydroelectric development — the Grandes Chutes hydroelectric project on the Konkouré main stem has altered river hydrology and sediment dynamics within the basin.

Deforestation of riparian zones reduces the shading and organic leaf-litter input that characterise the forested stream habitats the species occupies. Siltation from upland erosion degrades the clear-water microhabitats near forest margins. The species' restriction to a single drainage — rather than being distributed across multiple independent catchments — means that local impacts cannot be buffered by recolonisation from outside the Konkouré system.

No targeted conservation programme for E. guineensis is documented in the literature. The captive population maintained by killifish hobbyists and societies represents a potential insurance resource, though the genetic diversity held ex situ and its correspondence to wild populations are unknown. Formal survey work to document the current distribution and abundance of the species within the Konkouré is a necessary first step toward any conservation planning.
