Enteromius catenarius is a small freshwater barb from the Kouilou-Niari River system of the Republic of Congo, described by Poll and Lambert in 1959 under the name Barbus catenarius and later reassigned to the genus Enteromius. Reaching no more than 2 in standard length, it is a little-known species with a yellow-orange body and brown-edged scales; it remains Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects the scarcity of survey data from its Congo basin drainage rather than any confirmed decline.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius catenarius was described by Poll and Lambert in 1959 in the journal Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines, originally placed in the genus Barbus. The type locality is Mindouli, in the Niari-Kouilou basin of the Republic of Congo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Enteromius catenarius (Poll & Lambert, 1959), the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of Barbus.

The genus Enteromius was established to accommodate a large group of small African barbs formerly lumped under the polyphyletic Barbus. Molecular and morphological work on African cyprinids — notably the review of the small African barbs within Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae — reassigned many sub-Saharan species to Enteromius, including this one. The shift follows the broader reorganisation of African and Asian barbs that dismantled the old catch-all genus Barbus and distributed its members across more natural genera.

Morphology

Enteromius catenarius is a small, slender barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is yellow-orange, with scales that carry a brownish edging giving the fish a subtly reticulated or chain-like pattern — the species name catenarius (Latin: of a chain) likely alludes to this appearance.

Beyond size and the general yellow-orange ground colour with brown-edged scales, detailed morphometric and meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, a reflection of how rarely it is encountered in collections or the aquarium trade. It conforms to the typical small-barb body plan of the genus: moderately compressed, with a small, slightly inferior mouth and no spine before the dorsal fin.

Habitat

The species is known from the Kouilou-Niari River system, a drainage that flows westward through the Republic of Congo to the Atlantic coast. The Niari and its tributaries pass through a mix of savanna and gallery forest, and the lower Kouilou traverses coastal lowlands before reaching the sea. Water chemistry in this drainage varies with catchment geology and vegetation, but many stream reaches in the Congo basin region carry soft to moderately mineralised water.

FishBase notes that the species may be more widespread than currently documented, and that further survey work is needed to clarify its actual range. It is classified as a benthopelagic, freshwater species with no known tolerance of brackish conditions.

Feeding

No specific feeding studies have been published for Enteromius catenarius. Like most small Enteromius species, it is presumed to be an omnivore, foraging opportunistically on small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus in the substrate and among aquatic vegetation — a feeding mode typical of small African barbs in similar riverine habitats.

In an aquarium setting, small barbs of this size and body type generally accept fine-grade dried foods, small live and frozen invertebrates such as micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, and daphnia, and occasional vegetable matter. Varied feeding tends to bring out the best colouration in yellow-orange species.

Mating

Enteromius catenarius has not been documented in spawning studies, but as a member of the cyprinid tribe it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal to barbs. Courtship consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are shed.

No territory is established and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning act. Eggs are adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, root tangles, or gravel. Adults are indifferent to the eggs and will eat them if given the opportunity.

Breeding

No captive breeding records are known for this species in the aquarium literature. Based on the uniform reproductive biology of the genus, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over a fine-leaved plant or spawning substrate, with no parental care whatsoever after spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming a few days later.

The species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and has not been evaluated as an aquarium subject. Given its small adult size, breeding it would require conditions typical for small African barbs — a fine-planted spawning tank, soft to moderately hard water, and prompt removal of adults after egg deposition.

In the aquarium

Enteromius catenarius is not an established aquarium fish and is not known to be available in the ornamental trade. It reaches only 2 in SL, which would make it suitable for small species aquaria, but the absence of any hobbyist records means there is no practical guidance on keeping it.

Small African Enteromius species that have appeared sporadically in specialist collections are generally kept in groups in well-planted tanks with soft, warm water and gentle filtration. They tend to be active, peaceful shoalers that feed readily on fine prepared and live foods. Whether E. catenarius would behave similarly in captivity is unknown.

Conservation

Enteromius catenarius is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The Data Deficient designation reflects a lack of adequate population data to determine extinction risk, not necessarily rarity — the species may simply be under-surveyed in its Congo basin drainage. FishBase likewise notes that it may be more widespread than records suggest.

The Kouilou-Niari basin in the Republic of Congo faces pressures common to much of Central African freshwater habitat: agricultural encroachment, artisanal mining, and reduced dry-season flows in some tributaries. Until targeted surveys establish the species' true range and population status, its conservation outlook cannot be meaningfully assessed.
