Enteromius kuiluensis is a small cyprinid barb endemic to the Kouilou-Niari basin, the most significant Atlantic-drainage river system of the Republic of Congo. Described by Pellegrin in 1930 from specimens collected in the Niari and Kouilou rivers, it belongs to the sprawling genus Enteromius — the dominant group of small barbs across sub-Saharan Africa. It remains poorly studied, and the IUCN classifies it as Data Deficient, a reflection of how little is known about its ecology and population status rather than evidence of security.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius kuiluensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1930 under the original combination Barbus kuiluensis, taking its name from the Kouilou River, the lower coastal reach of the Kouilou-Niari drainage in what is now the Republic of Congo. The species epithet kuiluensis means "of the Kouilou" — a straightforward toponym honouring the type locality. FishBase records the species under FishBase ID 11383.

The genus Enteromius is a large and morphologically diverse assemblage of small African barbs. Molecular and morphological studies — including DNA barcoding work on Congo basin Enteromius published in recent years — have revealed cryptic diversity within this group, and the broader taxonomy of Congo basin species remains an active area of research. Under the Catalog of Fishes the current valid combination is Enteromius kuiluensis (Pellegrin, 1930). No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Detailed morphological data for Enteromius kuiluensis are sparse in the secondary literature. It is a small barb in the typical Enteromius mould: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with a small downward-angled mouth suited to picking food from substrates, and the two pairs of barbels (rostral and maxillary) characteristic of many species in this genus.

Specific measurements — maximum standard or total length, fin ray counts, lateral line scale counts — have not been reported in sources available to this account. Primary meristic data would require consultation of Pellegrin's 1930 description in the original literature.

Habitat

Enteromius kuiluensis is known from the Kouilou-Niari river system, which drains a large area of the Republic of Congo westward to the Atlantic Ocean. Type specimens were collected from the Niari River (the upper and middle freshwater reach) and the Kouilou River (the tidal lower reach and estuary zone), and a syntype reportedly came from the Gabon side of the drainage. The Lekoumou River, a tributary within Lekoumou Province, has also been cited as part of the known range.

The Kouilou-Niari basin includes lowland forest streams, savanna-influenced river reaches, and seasonally variable tributary systems. The water chemistry of the basin varies across these habitats; detailed published records of temperature, pH, or conductivity specifically for localities where this species has been collected are not available in accessible sources.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Enteromius kuiluensis. By analogy with other small Enteromius in comparable Central African river systems, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates, algal films, detritus, and organic matter picked from the substrate and water column — the general feeding strategy of stream-dwelling small barbs in this region.

Eggs are adhesive and scattered among plants, roots, or over gravel and fine substrate; no parental care is given, and adults do not guard eggs or fry. Enteromius kuiluensis has not been bred in captivity in any account accessible here.

In the aquarium

Enteromius kuiluensis does not appear in the aquarium hobby literature and is not available in the ornamental trade. It is a rare, little-known endemic of a single river basin in the Republic of Congo and is unlikely to appear in the hobby in the foreseeable future.
