Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius guirali was described by the French naturalist Thominot in 1886, with the type locality recorded as the Senegal River and its tributaries in the region of present-day Senegal and Mali. The original combination was Barbus guirali Thominot, 1886 — the name appearing in the catch-all genus Barbus that once housed most of the world's medium-sized barbs. The parenthetical authority in the current combination, (Thominot, 1886), marks that the species has since been moved to a different genus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, places the species in Enteromius — the large African clade that was substantially rearranged when Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) partitioned the old Puntius/Barbus complex across multiple genera on both the African and Asian sides. Enteromius is now the holding genus for most sub-Saharan small-to-medium barbs, a group that awaits fuller phylogenetic resolution in several clades.
The species has also appeared in the literature under the legacy name Barbus guirali; older West African ichthyological catalogues will use that combination. No subspecies or regional variants are currently recognised.
Morphology
Enteromius guirali is a small barb reaching approximately 2–3 in standard length — a slender, moderately laterally compressed fish typical of the open-water shoalers found in West African Guinea savanna rivers. Like most Enteromius, it carries the characteristic cyprinid profile: a subterminal mouth suited for picking invertebrates and algae from the substrate and water column, a forked tail, and a single dorsal fin placed roughly at mid-body.
Detailed published descriptions of this species are sparse. The coloration is not well-documented in the primary literature, and the species is not widely represented in the aquarium trade or in ichthyological photography. Hobbyist records suggest a plain to lightly patterned body with a lateral stripe or faint banding, consistent with many West African Enteromius of similar size and range.
Habitat
Enteromius guirali is native to the river systems of West Africa, with confirmed records from the Senegal River basin and tributaries in Senegal, Mali and Guinea. Its habitat is the clear, flowing streams and main-channel margins of Guinea savanna rivers — systems characterised by seasonal fluctuation, a dry-season low-water phase and a wet-season flood pulse that inundates adjacent floodplains.
Water chemistry in these West African savanna rivers is typically soft to moderately hard, with pH in the range of 6.5–7.5 and temperatures broadly between 20 and 75 °F across the annual cycle. Flow rate varies substantially by season; during the dry season the fish concentrate in deeper pools and main channels, while the flush of the rains opens access to shallower, cooler, more oxygenated reaches. Substrate in preferred habitat is typically sand, fine gravel or laterite rock with some aquatic or marginal vegetation.
Feeding
Enteromius guirali is an omnivore, consistent with the feeding guild that characterises most small to medium African Enteromius. In the wild it takes small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with algae and organic detritus picked from the substrate and grazed from hard surfaces. The short, subterminal mouth is adapted for bottom and mid-water foraging rather than surface feeding.
As a schooling species it likely feeds throughout the day in short, opportunistic bouts, exploiting seasonal pulses of invertebrate production tied to the river's flood cycle. In the aquarium, species of this type accept a wide range of prepared and live foods readily.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius guirali is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental investment takes place beyond the act of spawning. Courtship consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over gravel, with the pair pressing together briefly to release eggs and milt simultaneously. There is no pair bond, and adults show no territory outside of transient courtship chasing.
In West African savanna rivers, spawning is typically cued by the onset of the rainy season — rising water levels, temperature drops from cooler rainfall, and an influx of food-rich floodwater all serve as proximate triggers for reproductively active fish. The adhesive eggs fall among plant roots or onto the substrate, after which the adults take no further interest in them.
Breeding
Spawning in Enteromius guirali follows the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, gravel or among submerged roots, with no parental care whatsoever. Adults readily eat their own eggs if they remain accessible, so in a captive setting separation of adults from spawn is necessary to achieve viable hatches.
No detailed captive-breeding accounts specific to this species appear in the readily available hobbyist literature. By analogy with other West African Enteromius of similar size, a conditioning period on protein-rich live or frozen foods, a spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, soft slightly acidic water in the low twenties Celsius, and removal of adults after spawning would form the basis of a standard approach. Eggs are expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at temperature, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later.
In the aquarium
Enteromius guirali is not established in the mainstream aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or public aquaria with a focus on West African biotopes. Its modest size, schooling nature and tolerance of a broad water chemistry range make it an ecologically appropriate candidate for a Guinea savanna biotope display, alongside other fish native to the Senegal–Guinea river systems.
If obtained, it would be kept similarly to other small African barbs: a group of six or more to sustain natural shoaling behaviour, a roomy tank with open swimming space, some current, fine gravel or sand substrate, and water in the pH 6.5–7.5 range at 68–75 °F. It is an active, midwater fish that poses no threat to robust tankmates and is straightforward to feed on a standard omnivore diet of prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates.
Conservation
Enteromius guirali has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species is considered regionally common within its range in the Senegal River basin and associated Guinea–Mali river systems, and no targeted exploitation for the aquarium trade is recorded.
The principal conservation concerns for West African river fish of this type are habitat-based: agricultural intensification, increased water abstraction for irrigation, sedimentation from deforestation, and dam construction along the Senegal River and its tributaries all degrade the clear, flowing habitats the species depends on. The Senegal River is among the more heavily managed watercourses in West Africa, with large impoundments — including the Manantali and Diama dams — that have substantially altered the river's flood pulse and sediment regime. While E. guirali appears resilient within its current range, the cumulative pressure on Guinea savanna stream habitats across the Sahel fringe warrants ongoing monitoring.
