Enteromius poechii is a small West African barb described by Franz Steindachner in 1911 from the Senegal River, where it inhabits the freshwater channels and tributaries of one of the continent's great westward-flowing river systems. Reaching only around 1–1.5 in in standard length, it is a diminutive cyprinid whose modest size and restricted, data-poor distribution have left it largely unstudied in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby. Like all enteromius-grade barbs it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner adapted to warm, seasonally variable savanna and Sahelian river environments. Its conservation status has never been formally assessed by the IUCN, reflecting how little is known about the broader West African small-barb fauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius poechii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1911, with the type locality recorded as the Senegal River. The original combination was Barbus poechii, and the species was subsequently carried in the literature under the broad catch-all genus Barbus for much of the twentieth century before being reassigned to Enteromius following modern molecular and morphological revisions of the African cyprinid fauna. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Enteromius poechii (Steindachner, 1911), the parenthetical authority indicating that the species has been moved from its original genus.

Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex genus encompassing the bulk of the small to medium-sized barb-grade cyprinids distributed across sub-Saharan and parts of West Africa. Many of its constituent species are known from few specimens and single river drainages, and E. poechii sits squarely in this category — a species defined by its type material from the Senegal basin and little revisited since.

Morphology

As a member of the enteromius grade, E. poechii has the generalised barb body plan: a small, laterally compressed and relatively fusiform fish with the characteristic single dorsal fin, paired pectoral and pelvic fins, and the rounded snout typical of small West African cyprinids. Adults reach approximately 1–1.5 in in standard length, placing it among the smaller representatives of the genus.

Detailed morphological data on coloration and meristic counts are sparse in the available literature. Like many small Enteromius of the Senegambian region, it is likely an unadorned, silvery to faintly olive-toned fish with little or no colour patterning on the flanks, though the specific arrangement of scales, barbels and fin-ray counts that define it as a species requires examination of the original description and type material. Data on sexual dimorphism are not available in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Enteromius poechii is native to the Senegal River and its tributaries in West Africa. The Senegal River is a major Sahelian and savanna river system draining portions of Guinea, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal, characterised by a pronounced seasonal flood pulse, warm temperatures year-round, and water chemistry that varies from soft and mildly acidic in the headwater streams of the Fouta Djallon massif to harder and more turbid in the middle and lower reaches crossing the sub-Sahelian plains.

FishBase records water temperatures of 73–79 °F for this species, consistent with the thermal regime of West African lowland rivers. Specific microhabitat data — substrate preferences, vegetation associations, depth range — are not available in the accessible literature. The species is treated as a strictly freshwater fish, with no records from brackish or estuarine waters.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies of Enteromius poechii appear in the accessible literature. By analogy with other small West African Enteromius of comparable size and river-system affiliation, it is assumed to be an omnivore or micro-invertebrate feeder, consuming small aquatic insects, crustaceans, algae and organic detritus from the substrate and water column — the typical feeding mode of small rheophilic barbs in savanna river systems.

In an aquarium context, such small African barbs generally accept a broad diet of fine-grade dried foods, live and frozen small invertebrates such as microworm, daphnia and newly hatched brine shrimp, and vegetable-based supplements.

Mating

Enteromius poechii, as a barb-grade cyprinid, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific observations of its reproductive behaviour have been published, but the broader biological template for Enteromius is well established: there is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental care of any kind. A gravid female is driven by one or more males through vegetation, over fine gravel or across open substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief lateral presses.

In the Senegal River system, spawning in many small barbs is timed to the annual flood pulse — rising waters in the wet season (approximately June to October) trigger upstream movements and spawning over flooded marginal vegetation and inundated gravel banks. The eggs are adhesive and disperse among the substrate after being shed.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Enteromius poechii are documented in the hobby or scientific literature. Given its small size and the standard barb reproductive mode, captive spawning would likely follow the pattern established for comparable small African barbs: a separate, shallow spawning vessel with warm, soft to moderately hard water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or gravel layer so scattered adhesive eggs fall beyond the reach of the adults. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Fecundity data are unknown. The larvae of small African barbs are typically free-swimming within a few days of hatching at tropical temperatures and are initially fed infusoria or other fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Enteromius poechii is essentially absent from the international aquarium trade and is not commercially available. It is a species known almost entirely from its type description and museum material, and no established captive husbandry exists to draw on.

Were it ever to become available, the parameters suggested by its native range would apply: warm water (73–79 °F), a broadly neutral to mildly acidic pH, moderate water movement reflecting the riverine environment of the Senegal system, and the gregarious shoaling conditions appropriate for a small barb. Its diminutive adult size of around 1–1.5 in SL would make it suitable for a species or biotope aquarium themed around the West African savanna-river fauna, but this remains hypothetical given its complete absence from captive collections.

Conservation

Enteromius poechii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its conservation status is therefore unknown. It is known from the Senegal River drainage, a river system that faces pressures including agricultural water extraction, dam construction (notably the Manantali and Diama dams and associated barrages), irrigation schemes, and pollution from both agricultural runoff and upstream mining activities in the Fouta Djallon headwaters.

Many small endemic barbs of West African river systems remain poorly documented and effectively invisible to conservation assessment processes. For a species represented by scattered museum records and no recent survey data, the precautionary concern is that localised endemism combined with ongoing hydrological modification of the Senegal system could constitute a real but unquantified threat. Targeted freshwater surveys of the Senegal River and its tributaries would be necessary to establish the species' current range, population status and actual conservation needs.
