Labeobarbus parawaldroni was formally described by Lévêque, Thys van den Audenaerde, and Traoré in 1987, at which time it was placed in the old African genus Barbus under the combination Barbus parawaldroni. The parenthetical authority in the current name marks that the species has since been reassigned to Labeobarbus, a genus now used for many of the larger African barbs previously lumped into the sprawling catch-all Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Labeobarbus parawaldroni as the valid name.
The specific epithet parawaldroni places the fish in relation to another species — likely Labeobarbus waldroni, itself a West African barb — with the prefix para- (Greek: beside, near) indicating a close or parallel relationship. The genus name Labeobarbus combines the root Labeo (Latin: lip) with Barbus (Latin: beard, barb), referencing the fleshy-lipped, barbel-bearing cyprinid body plan common to this group.
