Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius leonensis was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1915, with the type locality given as Maka, Sierra Leone. Boulenger placed it in the genus Barbus, the broad catch-all that held virtually all Old World barbs at the time; syntypes are deposited at the Natural History Museum London (BMNH 1914.12.9.7–8). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the original description in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Series 8, volume 15, number 86, page 203.
The genus Enteromius was established to accommodate a large radiation of small African barbs segregated from the sprawling Barbus aggregate. Yang et al. (2015) formally transferred leonensis to Enteromius, the combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes as valid. The species epithet leonensis means "of Sierra Leone" (from Leone, the colonial name of the territory), a straightforward geographic reference to the type locality. GBIF records the valid name as Enteromius leonensis (Boulenger, 1915), within the family Cyprinidae.
Morphology
Enteromius leonensis is a small barb; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in SL, though the species may reach somewhat larger sizes in the wild — values in the range of 2.5–4 in have been noted for the species complex. Like most Enteromius, the body plan is slender to moderately deep and laterally compressed, with the general cyprinid form of a subterminal mouth, small barbels, and cycloid scales.
Detailed morphological data on colour pattern, fin-ray counts, and scale formula for leonensis specifically are not extensively documented in the available literature, reflecting the status of many small West African Enteromius as relatively little-studied outside systematic revisions. The genus as a whole is characterised by the presence of a well-ossified last simple dorsal ray in many species, though diagnostic features for leonensis in particular await thorough modern redescription.
Habitat
The species inhabits freshwater systems across a broad latitudinal and climatic band of West Africa, recorded from large Sudanian river basins — the Chad, Niger, Volta, Senegal and Gambia — as well as the smaller coastal drainages of Côte d'Ivoire (Comoé and Bandama rivers) and Sierra Leone (Rokel, Jong and Moa rivers). This range spans both the drier Sudanian savanna zone and the more humid Guinea forest–savanna transition.
FishBase characterises E. leonensis as benthopelagic and potamodromous, indicating a life close to the riverbed with seasonal or directional movements within the river system. Water chemistry across this West African range varies considerably — from the softer, slightly acidic waters of humid coastal drainages to the harder, more mineral-rich flows of savanna-zone rivers — and the species appears able to tolerate moderate variation in these parameters. Specific temperature and pH data from field records are not extensively reported.
Feeding
Enteromius leonensis, like most small Enteromius, is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on the small invertebrates, algal films, organic detritus and plant fragments available in riverine and stream habitats. The benthopelagic habit suggests foraging is carried out at or near the substrate as well as in the water column.
Detailed gut-content studies specific to this species are not available in the accessible literature. Closely related West African Enteromius of similar size and habitat typically consume a mixed diet of aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, filamentous algae and fine detritus, and it is reasonable to infer a broadly similar feeding ecology for leonensis in the absence of targeted dietary data.
Mating
As with all barbs, E. leonensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no nest is built, and no parental territory is defended beyond transient courtship pursuit. When fish are in spawning condition — typically influenced by temperature, water level, and food availability — a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate.
The two fish press together momentarily and release eggs and milt simultaneously. The fertilised eggs are adhesive and drift into plants, settle among substrate particles, or lodge in crevices, where they are left entirely without parental attention. Breeding aggregations may form in the wild during seasonal water rises or migrations within the drainage, consistent with the potamodromous habit noted for the species.
Breeding
No specific aquarium-breeding accounts for Enteromius leonensis appear in the hobbyist literature, reflecting its rarity in the trade. Based on the biology of comparable small West African Enteromius, spawning in captivity would likely follow the standard barb template: soft to moderately hard, warm water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop for egg deposition, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs are adhesive and scattered freely; there is no parental care of any kind. Incubation time and larval development would be expected to track water temperature in the typical range for tropical African cyprinids, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days and initially requiring microscopic foods before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed dry foods.
In the aquarium
Enteromius leonensis is not a species with a significant presence in the aquarium hobby, and dedicated husbandry literature is essentially absent. As a small, active West African cyprinid it would fit the general pattern of small Enteromius kept by specialist hobbyists interested in African riverine fauna: a spacious tank with open swimming space, some planting, clean well-oxygenated water, and a temperature reflecting its tropical West African origin.
Keeping it in a shoal, as with all schooling barbs, would be expected to produce more natural behaviour and reduce stress. Diet would be broadly omnivorous — good-quality small flake or micro-pellet supplemented with live and frozen invertebrate foods. Its small size and probable hardiness would make it manageable for aquarists familiar with African cyprinids, but the near-absence of trade supply means it is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist importers.
Conservation
Enteromius leonensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted by Lalèyè, P. in 2010 (taxon ID e.T182772A7965128). The LC listing reflects the species' wide distribution across multiple large West African river basins, none of which show evidence of drastic range-wide decline.
Nonetheless, West African freshwater fish face mounting pressures across much of the region — including expanding artisanal and agricultural water use, dam construction on major rivers such as the Niger and Volta, sedimentation from deforestation and land-use change, and pollution from mining and urban run-off. Species recorded from the smaller coastal drainages of Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire may face more localised habitat degradation in those systems. The 2010 assessment predates more than a decade of additional pressure on West African freshwater habitats, and updated data would help clarify whether the Least Concern status remains fully warranted.
