Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius pobeguini was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1911 under the original combination Barbus pobeguini, with the type locality given as the Corubal River in what is now Guinea-Bissau. The species was subsequently carried under the broad genus Barbus for much of the twentieth century before being transferred to Enteromius Cope, 1867, in line with the resolution of African small-barb taxonomy. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Enteromius pobeguini (Pellegrin, 1911), the parenthetical authority signalling the move from Pellegrin's original genus.
The genus Enteromius, first erected by Cope in 1867, accommodates the bulk of the small African barbs formerly lumped under Barbus — a paraphyletic assemblage that molecular and morphological work has progressively dismantled. FishBase (SpecCode 2422) confirms E. pobeguini as a senior synonym with no current subspecies divisions, a position corroborated by the NCBI Taxonomy database (Taxonomy ID 1001912). As with many African Enteromius, the species is seldom encountered in scientific literature beyond its original description and regional ichthyological surveys.
Morphology
Enteromius pobeguini is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum of 2 in in standard length (approximately 2 in SL) in males; females are typically somewhat fuller-bodied when gravid. FishBase records the maximum male size at 2 in SL, placing it firmly in the smaller end of the Enteromius spectrum.
Beyond size data, detailed morphological descriptions in the open literature are sparse. As a member of the broader African small-barb complex, the species likely exhibits the typical Enteromius body plan: a fusiform, laterally compressed profile, small barbels, and the standard cyprinid fin arrangement. Precise scale counts, lateral-line pore counts, and colouration details are not well documented in accessible sources, and the species warrants a modern morphological redescription.
Habitat
The species occupies a variety of freshwater environments across the Sudanian savanna belt of West Africa. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic and potamodromous — undertaking movements within river systems — and records it from the Niger, Senegal, Gambia and Volta river basins as well as the coastal basins of Comoé, Bandama and Sassandra in Côte d'Ivoire and the Tominé in Guinea. These are warm, seasonally fluctuating savanna rivers and streams, with chemistry broadly typical of Sudanian freshwaters — neither the blackwater extremes of equatorial forest nor the hard, alkaline conditions of the East African Rift.
A particularly well-studied outlier population inhabits the gueltas (rock pools and spring-fed basins) of the Adrar Mountains in Mauritania, at the northern ecological limit of the species. A PLoS ONE study documented these fish surviving in perennial water bodies in a semi-arid Saharan landscape, associating with Barbus macrops, Sarotherodon galilaeus and Clarias anguillaris. The water chemistry of the Adrar gueltas is reported as chemically similar to other Sudanian savanna streams. The smallest documented guelta held only 1.7 cubic metres of water at its lowest recorded level, illustrating the precarity of these isolated relict populations.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Enteromius pobeguini appears in accessible literature. By analogy with other small Enteromius of the Sudanian savanna zone, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, exploiting small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans — algae, diatoms, and fine organic detritus picked from benthic surfaces and the water column. Its benthopelagic habit is consistent with bottom-associated foraging over sand, gravel or leaf-covered substrates.
In captivity, small Enteromius of this size class generally accept fine flake or granule foods readily, supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp nauplii. In the absence of species-specific feeding data, a varied omnivore diet covering both animal protein and vegetable matter is appropriate.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius pobeguini is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental investment after eggs are released. Courtship follows the pattern typical of the family: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the two pressing together momentarily as eggs and milt are shed.
Spawning in the wild is likely seasonal, tied to temperature and rainfall cycles that characterise the Sudanian savanna — the onset of the rains driving fish into flooded areas and triggering reproductive condition. In the isolated Adrar Mountain populations, where surface water is constrained to year-round gueltas rather than seasonal floodplains, the timing and triggers for reproduction may differ from those of the mainline riverine populations.
Breeding
Enteromius pobeguini is an egg-scatterer with no parental care; eggs and fry are not guarded by either parent and the adults will consume eggs given the opportunity. The species has not been described in the aquarium breeding literature, and detailed captive-breeding accounts are absent from accessible sources.
In principle, breeding would follow the standard small-barb protocol: a conditioned pair or group over fine substrate or spawning mops, with adults removed after spawning to protect the adhesive eggs. Hatching and larval development timings are undocumented for this species specifically. The isolated Adrar guelta populations reproduce in highly constrained, drought-stressed habitats, suggesting a degree of resilience to variable conditions.
In the aquarium
Enteromius pobeguini is not a species encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade, and no established husbandry literature exists for it. The isolated Adrar Mountain populations have been documented in a conservation context rather than a hobbyist one, and the species is unlikely to be available commercially.
Were it to be kept, husbandry would follow general principles for small West African Enteromius: a roomy tank with warm, soft-to-moderately hard, well-oxygenated water in the mid-twenties Celsius range, fine-substrate planting, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality dry foods. As with most small barbs, gregarious keeping in a group of six or more is preferable to solitary or paired specimens.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Enteromius pobeguini as Least Concern, reflecting the species' broad distribution across multiple large West African river systems — the Niger, Senegal, Gambia and Volta basins among others — which collectively buffer it against range-wide decline.
Nevertheless, regional vulnerability is documented. A PLoS ONE study of the Adrar Mountains population in Mauritania recorded that four of thirteen historically occupied gueltas had been lost or reduced to ephemeral status between 1970 and the study date, driven by progressive desiccation of the semi-arid landscape. These relict Saharan populations are isolated, cannot be replenished by dispersal from the main range, and represent a distinct edge-of-range heritage. While their loss does not threaten the species globally, it represents an irreversible reduction in the species' ecological and possibly genetic diversity. Ongoing climate aridification in the western Sahel and Sahara poses a continued threat to these northern outlier populations.
