Enteromius nigeriensis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1903, with the type locality recorded as the lower Niger River in Nigeria. The original combination was Barbus nigeriensis Boulenger, 1903 — at that time virtually all African small barbs were placed in the sprawling genus Barbus. The species was subsequently carried under the genus Enteromius when that name was resurrected and applied to a large clade of sub-Saharan African barbs following molecular and morphological reassessment in the early twenty-first century. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Enteromius nigeriensis (Boulenger, 1903), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Boulenger's original genus.
Enteromius is itself a genus with a complex nomenclatural history, long debated as to its limits relative to Barbus and related African genera. The revision placing many West and Central African small barbs in Enteromius has stabilised the taxonomy for most species in the group, though the boundaries of the genus remain the subject of ongoing ichthyological work. E. nigeriensis is not currently assigned to any named species group within Enteromius, and primary taxonomic literature specifically addressing the species is sparse.
Morphology
Enteromius nigeriensis is a small barb, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length in the range of approximately 2–2.5 in. Like most members of the genus it is a slender, fusiform fish with the modest lateral compression and upturned mouth typical of small African stream barbs. Should the species become available, its requirements would be expected to match other small West African stream barbs: a well-filtered aquarium with moderate flow, tropical temperatures of 72–79 °F, near-neutral to slightly acid water (pH 6.5–7.5), fine substrate and plant cover, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality dried foods. As a shoaling barb it would be best kept in groups. Its rarity in captivity means any husbandry advice is extrapolated from better-known congeners rather than direct aquarist experience.
Conservation
Enteromius nigeriensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is Not Evaluated. No dedicated threat assessment or population trend data were located in the literature.
