Taxonomy & naming
Haludaria fasciata was originally described by the British surgeon-naturalist Thomas C. Jerdon in 1849 from southern India, and the species has drifted through several generic placements in its 175-year history. It was long carried under the large catch-all genus Puntius — best known to aquarists as the home of the tiger barb — and will appear under that name in much of the older aquarium and ichthyological literature. The Catalog of Fishes, following the landmark revision of South Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012), now places it in the resurrected genus Haludaria, making the current valid combination Haludaria fasciata (Jerdon, 1849). The parenthetical authority reflects the move out of Jerdon's original genus.
The genus Haludaria was erected specifically for this species — it is the sole member. The generic name honours the Haluda River (also written Haladu or Halade) system in the Western Ghats, a region of exceptional endemism in Indian freshwater fishes. The epithet fasciata is Latin for 'banded' and refers to the dark vertical bars that cross the flanks, though as discussed below the number and intensity of those bars is highly variable across the range.
The geographic colour and bar variation is so pronounced that populations from different parts of the Western Ghats were historically suspected to be separate species or subspecies. Seriously Fish notes that highland fish tend to an orange base, lowland fish to purple or reddish hues, and bar count follows a north-to-south cline from five bars in Goa, to four in Karnataka and northern Kerala, three and two in central and southern Kerala, to none at all in the Kanyakumari district at the tip of the subcontinent. Whether these represent incipient taxa or continuous clinal variation has not been formally resolved.
Morphology
The melon barb is a small, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching 2.5–3 in in standard length. The body is laterally compressed and somewhat high-backed in the mid-section, giving gravid females a distinctly rounded ventral profile. The ground colour is the species' most celebrated feature: populations from upland streams in Goa and northern Karnataka show a warm orange to amber base, while those from lower-elevation rivers in central and southern Kerala tend toward purple, reddish-violet, or pinkish tones. In all populations the fins are typically clear to faintly reddish.
Dark vertical bars cross the flank in numbers that vary clinally with latitude: five bars in Goa, four in Karnataka and northern Kerala, three in central Kerala, two in southern Kerala, and none (or vestigial) in Kanyakumari district fish. This pattern makes the melon barb one of the more visually variable barbs in the Indian fauna and is a useful biogeographic marker for identifying the origin of any given population.
Sexual dimorphism follows the typical barb pattern. Males are generally slimmer and more intensely coloured, while females are larger-bodied and become noticeably rounder in the abdomen when carrying eggs.
Habitat
Haludaria fasciata is endemic to the Western Ghats of southern India, recorded from the states of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Its range extends from near the Maharashtra border in the north to Kanyakumari at the southern tip of the subcontinent — a north-to-south span of roughly 435 mi along the ghats.
The species uses a broad range of freshwater habitats: hill streams flowing over rocky or sandy substrates with good oxygenation, the quieter reaches of larger rivers, irrigation canals, ponds, and the vegetated margins of lakes. Seriously Fish notes a preference for shallow, quieter zones with aquatic vegetation or accumulations of leaf litter — microhabitats that offer both refuge and feeding opportunity. FishBase characterises it as potamodromous and benthopelagic, indicating regular movement within flowing-water systems and use of the lower water column.
Water parameters across the range span soft to moderately hard water. FishBase gives a temperature range of 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.0–6.5; Seriously Fish broadens the pH to 6.0–7.5 with hardness measurements of 36–179 ppm, reflecting the variety of conditions encountered across elevation and geographic gradients. Highland stream populations likely inhabit cooler, faster, and more acidic water than lowland canal and pond fish.
Feeding
The melon barb is an omnivore with a broad and opportunistic diet. Seriously Fish records diatoms, filamentous algae, organic detritus, small insects, aquatic worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton among the items taken in the wild. This combination of plant, algal, and animal material is typical of the small barbs of peninsular India, which forage across the substrate surface, among vegetation, and in the water column depending on local food availability.
In the aquarium, the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of prepared foods. High-quality flakes and small pellets form a practical staple, and condition and colour are enhanced by regular supplementation with live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small mosquito larvae — and the inclusion of algae-based or spirulina-enriched foods to meet the herbivorous component of the diet. The species' naturally gregarious behaviour means that competitive feeding in a group is normal; feeding in open water suits an active, mid-water shoaler.
Mating
Like all barbs, Haludaria fasciata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond that outlasts the spawning act, and no parental investment once eggs have been shed. Courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, the two pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
The species is gregarious — Seriously Fish notes that it forms large schools with both conspecifics and other species — and in the wild spawning likely occurs opportunistically when fish are in good condition during the warmer, wetter months of the southwest monsoon season, when river levels and food availability peak. In the aquarium, condition rather than strict seasonality drives readiness to spawn. The adhesive eggs are scattered among plants or onto the substrate and receive no further attention from either parent.
Breeding
Breeding Haludaria fasciata in the aquarium follows the standard pattern for small egg-scattering barbs. A separate shallow spawning tank with slightly soft and acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, temperature around 75–79 °F) and a good covering of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops is the usual setup. A mesh, spawning grid, or shallow layer of pebbles on the bottom allows scattered eggs to fall out of the reach of the adults, which will eat them given the opportunity.
A well-conditioned pair or small group is introduced in the evening, and spawning typically occurs during the morning hours. The female scatters adhesive eggs among the plants or over the substrate as the male drives her. Adults should be removed after spawning is complete. Eggs hatch in around 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days later, when they are ready for infusoria or very fine prepared fry foods, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. The species' broad geographic range and long presence in the ornamental trade suggest it has been successfully bred in captivity for many decades, though it is not as commercially prolific in the hobby as the tiger barb or cherry barb.
In the aquarium
The melon barb has been kept in the hobby for decades and is valued for the warm colouration and geographic variation it brings to a community tank. A group of at least six to eight fish is recommended to allow normal shoaling behaviour and to keep the species settled; smaller numbers produce nervous, drab individuals that may harass tankmates. A roomy tank with open swimming space in the middle and background planting reflects the natural habitat and shows the fish to best advantage.
Water should be kept soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), and warm (72–79 °F) — conditions that replicate the lower Western Ghats river systems where it is most commonly collected for the trade. The species is peaceful and mixes well with other active, similarly sized fish of comparable temperament. Slow-moving or long-finned species are not ideal companions. The geographic colour variation means that fish sold in the trade may differ visually depending on their provenance, and aquarists who source fish from known populations (Goa, Karnataka, or Kerala) will see distinct expressions of the species' colouration. Diet is straightforward — a variety of flake, small pellets, and occasional frozen foods keeps it healthy and colourful.
Conservation
Haludaria fasciata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated on 25 June 2010 by Robin Abraham as part of a Western Ghats freshwater species assessment. The assessment reflects that the species is broadly distributed across the Western Ghats from Goa to Kanyakumari and is relatively common across its range, with no evidence at the time of assessment of a range-wide decline sufficient to place it in a threatened category.
Nevertheless, the Western Ghats is a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot under significant and growing pressure. Habitat degradation through dam construction, water extraction for irrigation, agricultural encroachment, and organic and chemical pollution affects the freshwater systems along the ghats, particularly at lower elevations where the species' irrigated-canal and pond populations are concentrated. The ornamental trade collects wild fish from the region, though the level of exploitation pressure relative to natural population sizes is not well documented. Highland populations in faster-flowing tributary streams may be more naturally resilient due to access to less-degraded habitat, while lowland populations in extensively modified landscapes face greater long-term risk.
