Taxonomy & naming
Haludaria melanampyx was first described by Francis Day in 1865, originally placed in the genus Labeo as Labeo melanampyx, with the type locality given as Mundikyum in Kerala, India. Day collected broadly across peninsular India during the 1860s and 1870s, and the species was subsequently moved through several genera: Barbus, then the broad catch-all Puntius, and later Dravidia, before its current placement in Haludaria was established following the systematic revision of South Asian cyprinids.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid combinations) recognises the species as Haludaria melanampyx (Day, 1865), with the parenthetical authority reflecting its transfer out of Day's original Labeo placement. Synonyms in the literature include Puntius fasciatus, Puntius melanampyx, and Dravidia melanampyx — the last a genus erected for this and closely related Western Ghats barbs before Haludaria was formalised. The genus Haludaria is one of several resulting from the broad reassessment of the old Puntius aggregate that followed Pethiyagoda et al.'s 2012 revision of South Asian cyprinids, which dismembered the historically convenient but phylogenetically incoherent Puntius into numerous smaller, more natural genera.
The species epithet melanampyx is Greek: melas (dark, black) and ampyx (a band or headband), referring to the dark lateral stripe or markings that give this fish its characteristic pattern. FishBase notes the distribution as Goa, south Canara, Travancore Hills, Nagercoil, and the Nilgiris, with the Cauvery drainage as the eastern limit in the Western Ghats.
Morphology
Haludaria melanampyx is a small, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching a maximum of 3 in in total length (per FishBase), typical in proportions for a small Indian hill-stream cyprinid. The body is laterally compressed and the profile is smoothly arched, with a blunt snout and a small subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and organic matter from surfaces. One or two pairs of barbels are present in the genus, though precise barbel number can vary among closely related Haludaria.
The colour pattern involves a dark lateral band or stripe — the feature implicit in the species epithet — against a silvery or brassy ground colour, often with darker scale edges giving a reticulate or cross-hatched impression. Fins are typically hyaline to faintly pigmented. Precise colour descriptions from wild populations can differ from aquarium-held fish, and the literature on this specific species is sparse enough that a thorough meristic and colour description from modern museum specimens would be valuable.
Habitat
Haludaria melanampyx is a Western Ghats endemic, confirmed from Goa south through coastal Karnataka and Kerala to the Nilgiris and Cauvery drainage in Tamil Nadu. It is a hill-stream species associated with the fast, oxygen-rich streams draining the western escarpment of the Ghats, but it also occurs in associated lentic habitats — irrigation canals, ponds, and the quieter margins of larger rivers — indicating some flexibility in habitat use across its range.
The Seriously Fish account for the closely related Haludaria fasciata (which shares much of the same range and ecology) documents water conditions of pH 6.0–7.5, temperatures of 72–79 °F, and hardness of 36–179 ppm, figures broadly applicable to H. melanampyx given the overlap in habitat. Western Ghats hill streams are typically clear and well-oxygenated, fed by monsoon rains, and the species is presumed to experience seasonal fluctuation in flow, temperature, and water chemistry tied to the June–September south-west monsoon. Shallow, vegetated zones with bankside cover and a mix of substrate types are preferred microhabitats.
Feeding
Haludaria melanampyx is an omnivore, in keeping with the generalist feeding strategy of most small Indian barbs. The natural diet encompasses diatoms, filamentous algae, detritus, and small invertebrates including insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton, gleaned from surfaces and the water column. This broad dietary base allows the species to exploit the seasonal variation in food availability typical of monsoon-driven hill streams, where algal biofilms are abundant during low-flow periods and invertebrate drift increases during spates.
In the aquarium, the species accepts standard flake and small pellet foods readily, and benefits from supplementary live and frozen items such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, as well as some vegetable-based food to balance the diet. Varied feeding maintains condition and colouration.
Mating
Haludaria melanampyx reproduces in the manner typical of barbs: it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond, no nest, and no parental investment beyond the act of fertilisation. Spawning readiness in the wild is likely linked to seasonal cues — rising water temperatures and increased flow at the onset of the monsoon are plausible triggers, as seen in other Western Ghats barbs.
Courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released. No territory is held for more than a brief period during courtship, and multiple males may pursue a single female. Colouration and activity increase in mature, conditioned fish.
Breeding
As an egg-scatterer giving no parental care, Haludaria melanampyx scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, over submerged roots, or among gravel and substrate debris. Eggs and any resulting fry are ignored — and often consumed — by the adults; in the wild, dense vegetation and substrate complexity provide refugia that improve fry survival without parental defence.
In the aquarium, captive breeding follows the standard approach for small Indian barbs: a separate, shallow spawning tank with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH around 6.5–7.0, temperature 75–79 °F), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate mesh or marble layer to protect eggs from the parents. A well-conditioned pair is introduced, spawning typically occurs in the morning, and the adults are removed afterward. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures; larvae become free-swimming within a few days and are initially fed infusoria or rotifers, progressing to micro-foods as they grow. The species is not widely bred in captivity and available husbandry detail is limited.
In the aquarium
Haludaria melanampyx is not a common aquarium fish and is rarely seen in the trade outside India, but it is kept by hobbyists with an interest in the diverse and often overlooked fauna of the Western Ghats. Like most small barbs from fast hill streams, it does best in a tank with good water movement and oxygenation, reflecting its native current-prone environment. Water conditions in the range of pH 6.0–7.5 and 72–79 °F suit the species well, and it is unlikely to thrive in warm, still, or poorly oxygenated conditions.
It is a peaceful community fish and a vigorous feeder. A group of at least six is recommended to allow shoaling behaviour and reduce individual stress; the species' active, restless character means it is best kept with other small, active companions of similar temperament. A planted tank with some open swimming space, rockwork or driftwood for visual complexity, and a sandy or fine-gravel substrate approximating a Western Ghats stream bed provides an appropriate setting. The species is not demanding in diet and will accept most standard aquarium foods.
Conservation
Haludaria melanampyx was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN in 2010, an assessment conducted by R. Abraham under IUCN criteria version 3.1. The Data Deficient rating reflects the lack of adequate population data to make a reliable determination of conservation status, not an absence of concern — the Western Ghats is one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots, and its freshwater fish fauna faces well-documented pressures from habitat loss, dam construction, water abstraction, agricultural runoff, and pollution.
The species is a confirmed Western Ghats endemic, restricted to the coastal drainages and associated hill streams of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. This naturally circumscribed range, combined with the ongoing degradation of Western Ghats river systems, gives reason for concern even in the absence of quantified population trends. The Western Ghats Biodiversity Database confirms its endemic status, and updated population surveys across its range would be needed before a more precise IUCN category could be assigned. Collection for the ornamental trade is an additional but relatively minor pressure compared to habitat modification.
