Taxonomy & naming
Haludaria kannikattiensis was described by Arunachalam and Johnson in 2003 from the Tamirabarani River system of Tamil Nadu, southern India, with the type locality at Kannikatti. The original combination was Puntius kannikattiensis, the species entering a large and then-heterogeneous assemblage of South Asian barbs long warehoused in Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Haludaria kannikattiensis (Arunachalam & Johnson, 2003), with the parenthetical authority marking the shift out of the original genus.
The nomenclatural history reflects the broader restructuring of South Asian barbs that followed Pethiyagoda et al.'s 2012 revision and Pethiyagoda's further refinements in 2013. The species was transferred first to Dravidia and subsequently to Haludaria, a genus erected for a cluster of small, laterally banded barbs of peninsular India and Sri Lanka — the name Haludaria derived from haludar, a vernacular South Asian term for yellowish or golden-coloured fish. The placement in Haludaria is followed here per the current Catalog of Fishes authority.
Morphology
Haludaria kannikattiensis is a small barb, reaching approximately 2.5–3 in in standard length and rarely surpassing 3 in total length. Body form follows the general Haludaria pattern: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a blunt snout and the typical barbel complement of cyprinids. FishBase categorises it as a tropical freshwater benthopelagic species.
Detailed published accounts of live colouration are sparse. As a member of Haludaria, it presumably carries banding or lateral patterning consistent with congeners such as H. fasciata, which shows dark vertical bars on a pale to golden-yellow ground. The species is small enough that sexually ripe females would be distinguishable by the distension of the abdomen with eggs, a pattern common throughout the genus, though no formal dimorphism description has been recorded in the available literature.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Tamirabarani River basin, which drains the Agasthyamalai hills — among the wettest and most biodiverse sections of the southern Western Ghats — before flowing through the Tirunelveli plains to the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu. As a hill-stream cyprinid of this system, Haludaria kannikattiensis occupies clear, well-oxygenated, flowing freshwater typical of upland Western Ghats tributaries.
Water parameters recorded for the species are temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, and soft to moderate hardness — values consistent with the fast, clear hill streams of the southern Ghats, which tend toward near-neutral to mildly acidic conditions but harden slightly as drainage descends through the plains. The benthopelagic habit suggests association with the substrate — sandy or rocky stream beds with submerged vegetation or root masses — rather than open-water schooling.
Feeding
Haludaria kannikattiensis is carnivorous in feeding habit, recorded as taking micro-crustaceans, insect larvae and worms. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of similarly sized hill-stream barbs of the Western Ghats, which exploit the invertebrate drift and benthic fauna of fast-flowing clear-water streams.
In the aquarium, congeners and similar Western Ghats barbs accept a wide range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and similar items — along with high-quality micro-pellets. Given its carnivorous tendency, a diet weighted toward protein sources rather than plant matter would best match its natural trophic niche.
Mating
As a barb, Haludaria kannikattiensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is maintained beyond transient courtship activity, and no parental bond persists after spawning. Courtship follows the pattern common to hill-stream barbs of the subcontinent: a ripe male pursues and presses a gravid female, driving her through submerged vegetation or over the stream substrate until eggs and milt are released together.
The adhesive eggs scatter among plant leaves, root masses, or fine substrate, and from that point receive no attention from either parent. Adults readily consume their own eggs when spawning occurs in confined conditions. In the wild, the current of hill streams may disperse eggs into crevices and among stones where predation pressure is lower.
Breeding
No specific captive-breeding account for Haludaria kannikattiensis has been published in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade. By analogy with congeners such as H. fasciata — which has been bred in captivity — the expected method would involve soft, near-neutral water in the mid-twenties Celsius, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and well-conditioned adults introduced to a separate spawning tank.
Eggs would be adhesive and scattered among vegetation or over the bottom. The adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry, once free-swimming, would be expected to accept infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp, advancing to finely ground dry foods as they grow. The species' restricted provenance and rarity in the hobby mean that any successful captive reproduction would be of conservation interest.
In the aquarium
Haludaria kannikattiensis is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium trade. Its single-basin endemism in the southern Western Ghats and absence from commercial breeding programmes mean it is encountered only occasionally by specialist collectors or through the rare export of wild-caught specimens from Tamil Nadu. No established captive husbandry literature exists for it specifically.
By reference to congeners and its known ecology, it would require clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water — temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, soft to moderate hardness — replicating the clear hill-stream conditions of the Tamirabarani basin. A current from a powerhead or spray bar, a substrate of sand and smooth gravel, and minimal organic load would suit it. Given its small size (under 3 in TL) and carnivorous tendency, tankmates of similar scale and temperament would be appropriate. The species would best be kept as a small shoal to reflect its natural gregarious behaviour.
Conservation
Haludaria kannikattiensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated 30 March 2011 (TaxonID 172398, AssessmentID 70097498). The LC designation reflects the absence, at that assessment, of evidence of range-wide population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. However, the species is a strict endemic to the Tamirabarani River basin — a single hydrological unit — which structurally limits its ability to recover from localised impacts.
The Tamirabarani system, although relatively intact in its upper reaches within the Kalakad–Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, faces growing water-extraction pressure for agriculture and municipal supply in its lower plains reaches. Dam construction and channel modification in Tamil Nadu's river systems pose long-term threats to the benthopelagic invertebrate communities on which this species depends. Any collection for the ornamental trade — currently minimal — would add to those pressures if it were to increase. The IUCN assessment predates more than a decade of landscape change in the southern Western Ghats and a reassessment may be warranted.
