Hypselobarbus curmuca, the curmuca barb, is a large, deep-bodied cyprinid endemic to the river systems of peninsular India, reaching 47 in in total length and placing it among the biggest barbs on the subcontinent. Originally described by Francis Hamilton in 1807 as Cyprinus curmuca from the Karnatae River in Mysore, it inhabits the hill rivers and deep shaded pools of the Western Ghats — one of the world's premier biodiversity hotspots — where it feeds on algae and insect larvae in fast, clear water. Decades of dam construction, over-exploitation for food, water abstraction, and habitat degradation have reduced populations severely enough that the IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2010, and it remains a species of serious conservation concern across its fragmented range.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus curmuca was described by Francis Hamilton in 1807 under the name Cyprinus curmuca, based on specimens from the Karnatae River in Mysore, India. The species epithet curmuca is a Latinisation of a local vernacular name. The original genus Cyprinus was an early catch-all; the species was later moved through Barbus and Puntius before eventually being placed in Hypselobarbus, a genus of large Indian barbs. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Hypselobarbus curmuca (Hamilton, 1807), with the parenthetical authority indicating the genus transfer out of Hamilton's original placement.

Hypselobarbus is a genus of large, robust South Asian barbs distributed across peninsular India and Sri Lanka, historically associated with the Western Ghats and Deccan river systems. The genus was long treated as a subgroup within the sprawling Puntius complex; molecular and morphological studies have confirmed its distinctiveness. Hypselobarbus species are characterised by their large size, potamodromous life history, and a lateral line carrying 38–42 scales. GBIF and the India Biodiversity Portal both record this species under the current Hypselobarbus placement.

Morphology

Hypselobarbus curmuca is a large, deep-bodied barb, growing to a maximum recorded total length of 47 in. The body is laterally compressed and deep-backed in the typical high-bodied mahseer style. The lateral line carries 38–42 scales. A single pair of maxillary barbels is present, a useful diagnostic feature within the genus. The overall profile is robust and powerful — adapted to life in flowing hill rivers with strong currents.

The species is benthopelagic and potamodromous, moving through the water column and undertaking migrations within river systems. Detailed published colour descriptions for wild-caught adults are sparse in the available literature, but large Indian barbs of the Hypselobarbus group typically show silvery to brassy flanks with darker dorsal surfaces. Precise fin-ray and scale counts beyond the lateral-line data are not fully resolved in the sources consulted here.

Habitat

Hypselobarbus curmuca inhabits hilly terrain rivers, favouring deep pools in shaded stretches and fast-flowing reaches with high dissolved oxygen. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, potamodromous species — one that migrates within river systems rather than between fresh and salt water. Spawning movements take the fish into smaller tributary streams with sandy and weedy bottoms.

The species is distributed across several river systems in the Western Ghats, including west-flowing rivers such as the Kali, Sharavathi, and Chalakudy, and east-flowing drainages including the Ghod and Tungabhadra. A study published in Aquatic Conservation documented phenotypic variation across these river populations, consistent with a species adapted to distinct drainage-specific conditions rather than a single homogeneous population. The clear, well-oxygenated hill rivers it requires are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in peninsular India.

Feeding

Hypselobarbus curmuca is an omnivore with a strong algal component in its diet. FishBase records that it feeds mainly on algae and insect larvae in the wild, grazing the substrate of rocky and sandy riverbed habitats in the hills. This diet is consistent with other large Indian barbs that exploit the rich periphyton and macroinvertebrate communities of fast-flowing Ghats rivers.

In the aquarium hobby, care guides suggest it can be maintained on a varied diet of algae-based foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrate foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. The species' large adult size, however, means that full-grown individuals require substantial feeding and space, making it a challenging prospect outside specialist public aquaria or very large private facilities.

Mating

Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus curmuca is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental care is given. In the wild, spawning is seasonal and potamodromous — adults move upstream into smaller tributary streams with sandy and weedy substrates to spawn. A driving male pursues a gravid female through the shallows or over the substrate; the pair release eggs and milt together, and the adhesive eggs settle among aquatic vegetation or onto the sandy bottom.

There is no pair bond, no territory defended beyond the act of spawning, and no subsequent guarding of eggs or fry. Adults disperse after spawning, and in nature the eggs are left entirely to their own fate. This broadcast-spawning strategy is characteristic of large migratory riverine cyprinids, which compensate for high early mortality with high fecundity.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hypselobarbus curmuca is exceptionally rare owing to the species' large adult size and its requirement for space, clean fast-moving water, and the seasonal environmental cues — water temperature shifts, flow changes — that appear to trigger spawning migrations in the wild. No established aquarium breeding protocol exists in the mainstream hobby literature.

Hobbyist care sources suggest that any breeding attempt would require a large dedicated tank with subdued lighting and conditioning on high-quality live and frozen foods to bring adults into spawning condition. Eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or sandy substrate would need to be separated from the adults immediately, as there is no parental care and eggs risk being consumed. Fry, if obtained, would progress from infusoria through microworms to newly hatched brine shrimp in the standard egg-layer progression. In practice, breeding of this species remains a specialist undertaking, and conservation-oriented captive-breeding programmes are of considerably greater urgency than hobby production.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus curmuca is not a practical aquarium fish for most hobbyists. At up to 47 in total length it is one of the largest barbs in the world, and an adult requires a tank measured in thousands of litres — the kind of space found in public aquaria rather than home set-ups. Young specimens are occasionally offered in the trade in countries where the species occurs, but buyers rarely have facilities adequate for full-grown fish.

For those with sufficient space, the species needs well-filtered, highly oxygenated, clean water with moderate to brisk flow, a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and temperatures consistent with the cool hill rivers of the Western Ghats — cooler than many tropical aquarium species. The omnivorous diet is easily met with algae wafers, quality sinking pellets, and supplemental live or frozen invertebrate foods. Its Endangered status and restricted, declining wild range mean that responsible acquisition must take sourcing into account; fish of verified captive origin are the only appropriate choice.

Conservation

Hypselobarbus curmuca is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in June 2010 under criterion A2acd. The assessment notes low resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of 4.5–14 years and a high to very high vulnerability to fishing pressure (scored 72/100). The combination of slow recovery potential and sustained exploitation makes population recovery extremely difficult once declines take hold.

The principal threats are dam construction fragmenting migratory corridors in the Western Ghats rivers, over-harvesting for food and local markets, water abstraction reducing dry-season flows, and pollution from agriculture and urban development. The Ghats river systems — already among the most fragmented freshwater landscapes in South Asia — continue to face infrastructure pressure, and the species' requirement for clean, fast, well-oxygenated hill rivers places it in direct conflict with water development priorities. Phenotypic divergence across its river populations (documented in the Aquatic Conservation literature) suggests that individual river populations may have limited ability to rescue one another, increasing the effective extinction risk for each drainage unit.
