Hypselobarbus jerdoni was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1870. Day placed it within the broad assemblage of South Asian barbs then gathered under various genera; the species has historically appeared in older literature under Barbus and Puntius before reaching its current placement in Hypselobarbus. The valid combination Hypselobarbus jerdoni (Day, 1870) is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names. The parenthetical around Day's name marks the transfer out of the genus in which he originally described it.
The genus Hypselobarbus is a Western Ghats–centred group of large barbs, mostly Indian endemics, whose relationships within the broader Cyprinidae have been refined by molecular and morphological work over recent decades. Hypselobarbus species were historically lumped with Puntius, a catch-all that was progressively dismantled following Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and related revisions. The epithet honours Thomas C. Jerdon (1811–1872), the British surgeon-naturalist who contributed extensively to the documentation of South Asian fauna. Morphology
Jerdon's carp is a sizeable barb, recorded to 18 in total length (TL) on FishBase, placing it firmly in the large-river barb category alongside other big Hypselobarbus species from the Western Ghats. The body plan is typical of the genus: elongate to moderately deep, with a rounded snout, relatively large scales, and the four barbels characteristic of the Hypselobarbus group. Details of colouration in life are not widely documented in the accessible literature, though the species is broadly described as silvery to olive-golden, consistent with other large Ghats barbs.
Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species in the published sources available. As with related large barbs, females are likely to be deeper-bodied when gravid, but specific external differences between the sexes are not confirmed in accessible data. Juveniles in large-river barbs of this group typically show more saturated markings that fade with age.
Habitat
Hypselobarbus jerdoni is native to running waters and larger streams in the sub-Ghats zone of peninsular India — the rivers and their tributaries flowing from the Western Ghats through Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. FishBase characterises it as inhabiting running waters and large streams below the ghats proper, suggesting preference for mid-elevation and lowland river reaches rather than the highest headwater zones.

Hypselobarbus jerdoni is a rare species in the aquarium trade and is not commonly available. Its potential adult size of up to 18 in TL means that only a very large aquarium — measured in hundreds of litres — can realistically house even a small group of adults. The species' requirement for cool (68–79 °F), fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water with substrates of boulders and gravel further constrains suitable setups to those designed for Western Ghats hillstream or large-river biotopes.
A powerful external filter providing strong flow, supplemented with powerheads if necessary, is essential. Water quality must be maintained at a high standard; large active barbs are sensitive to deteriorating water conditions. Tankmates should be robust, of appropriate size, and adapted to the same cool, fast-water biotope — smaller fish risk predation or harassment from a large barb. The detritivore diet is easily met with high-quality sinking pellets, vegetable matter and occasional live or frozen invertebrates. The Western Ghats remains a global biodiversity hotspot under intense pressure from agriculture, urbanisation, water abstraction, dam construction and pollution of river systems, and these pressures are worth monitoring even for a species not currently classified as threatened. For a large, potamodromous, range-restricted endemic barb, dams can interrupt seasonal migration routes, water abstraction can reduce flow in the clear highland streams the species depends on, and riparian deforestation can remove the leaf litter that is its primary food source.
