Hypselobarbus dubius, the Nilgiris barb, is a large-bodied cyprinid endemic to the freshwater rivers of the Nilgiri hills and the Western Ghats of peninsular India. First described by Francis Day in 1867 from specimens taken in the Bhavani River at the base of the Nilgiri hills, it inhabits the deeper portions of large lowland streams and rivers, migrating upstream into hill-stream reaches during seasonal floods to spawn. Reaching up to 10 in in total length and feeding broadly on plant matter, seeds, insects and small mollusks, it is one of the distinctive big barbs of the Western Ghats — a biogeographic hotspot where freshwater endemism runs high and pressures on aquatic habitats run higher. The species is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus dubius was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1867, with the Bhavani River (also recorded as the Bowany River) at the foot of the Nilgiri hills serving as the type locality. The species was long carried under the broad genus Puntius and related catch-all genera before being placed in Hypselobarbus, a genus of large-bodied South Indian barbs now recognised in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., the authority for valid names).

The genus Hypselobarbus is built from the Greek hypselos, meaning high or elevated, combined with the Latin barbus, meaning barbel — a reference to the arched or deep-bodied profile shared by the species in this group. Day himself noted uncertainty around the species, finding it similar to what he called Puntius gracilis (now Hypselobarbus micropogon), and named it dubius — Latin for doubtful or uncertain — to reflect that perceived ambiguity. The parenthetical authority in the current combination, (Day, 1867), marks that the species has been moved from Day's original genus assignment.

Morphology

The Nilgiris barb is a large, moderately deep-bodied cyprinid reaching up to 10 in in total length. Like other members of Hypselobarbus, it has the high-backed, laterally compressed form typical of riverine big barbs, with a terminal mouth bearing the short barbels characteristic of the genus and a robust, streamlined body suited to larger river channels.

Detailed meristic and colour data from wild specimens are sparse in the hobbyist and popular literature. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, consistent with foraging in the mid-to-lower water column and near the substrate. Reliable external distinguishing features relative to its close Hypselobarbus congeners require reference to the primary ichthyological literature.

Habitat

Hypselobarbus dubius is native to the freshwater rivers of the Nilgiri hills and the broader Western Ghats of peninsular India, a mountainous range that acts as one of the world's foremost biodiversity hotspots for freshwater fishes. The species inhabits the deeper portions of large streams and rivers below the ghats — the main channel, run zones and pools of low-gradient lowland rivers — rather than the swift, rocky hill streams higher up.

The species is potamodromous: it undertakes seasonal migrations, moving upstream into upper stream reaches during flood periods to spawn before returning to lowland habitats. The broader Western Ghats region supports well-oxygenated freshwater with relatively soft water and temperatures spanning roughly 63–81 °F depending on altitude and season, with pH broadly near neutral (approximately 6.8–7.5). These clear, moderately fast waters stand in sharp contrast to the warm Sundaland blackwater streams of Southeast Asia, reflecting the Western Ghats' temperate-influenced montane character.

Feeding

In the wild, Hypselobarbus dubius is an omnivore with a broad dietary range. FishBase records it consuming plant materials and seeds, terrestrial insects, chironomid (midge) larvae, and small benthic mollusks. This mixed strategy — grazing vegetation and surface-fallen material alongside invertebrate prey taken from the substrate and water column — is consistent with the benthopelagic habits of a large river barb that forages across multiple microhabitats.

The reliance on seasonally available terrestrial inputs (seeds, insects falling onto the water surface) reflects the close coupling between riverine fish communities and the riparian vegetation of the Western Ghats — a relationship that makes intact riverbank forest a meaningful component of habitat quality for the species.

Mating

Hypselobarbus dubius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with the reproductive strategy of barbs generally. The species undertakes upstream potamodromous migrations during flood season, moving into upper river reaches to spawn — a pattern typical of larger riverine barbs and mahseers that use flood-driven cues and access to gravel or cobble substrate in faster, more oxygenated reaches as spawning triggers.

Courting males pursue ripe females in the current, driving alongside them through the water column and over the substrate to release eggs and milt simultaneously. No nest is constructed and no territory is held beyond the transient driving behaviour of courtship. There is no pair bond and no parental care — eggs are broadcast into the flow or over the substrate and abandoned immediately.

Breeding

Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus dubius practices egg-scattering with no parental care. Eggs are released over gravel, coarse substrate or among rocks in faster-flowing upper river reaches during the monsoon flood period, when rising water levels trigger the upstream migration. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among substrate interstices, where they develop without any attendance from either parent. Adults pose a risk to eggs given the opportunity, but the broadcast scattering into riffle habitat reduces egg predation under natural conditions.

No controlled aquarium breeding of the Nilgiris barb has been documented in the accessible hobbyist literature, reflecting the species' large size, migratory biology and Endangered status — it is not an established aquarium fish, and captive reproduction would require large, well-oxygenated facilities and careful simulation of seasonal flood triggers.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus dubius is not an established aquarium fish and is not encountered in the ornamental trade. Its large adult size of up to 10 in, potamodromous migratory biology, and Endangered conservation status make it unsuitable for typical home aquaria. The species belongs to a guild of large South Indian river barbs that are fished commercially and recreationally in the Western Ghats rather than kept ornamentally.

For aquarists interested in Western Ghats cyprinids at a manageable scale, other members of the region's rich barb fauna — including smaller Pethia and Dawkinsia species — offer alternatives. Any specimen of Hypselobarbus dubius encountered outside India would warrant close scrutiny regarding its origin and the legality of its collection.

Conservation

Hypselobarbus dubius is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 21 June 2010. The Endangered designation reflects a restricted, fragmented range within the Nilgiri hills and Western Ghats river systems of peninsular India, combined with ongoing declines in the extent and quality of its freshwater habitat.

The Western Ghats freshwater fauna faces an array of compounding pressures: dam construction and river regulation that block potamodromous migration routes, water extraction for agriculture and urban use, pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial sources, sand mining in river channels, and loss of riparian forest cover that reduces shading and terrestrial food inputs. Overfishing is an additional concern for large-bodied species, which mature late and produce fewer offspring per spawning event than small barbs. H. dubius, as a large, migratory, endemic species confined to a geographically limited river network, is particularly exposed to these cumulative stressors. Its conservation depends on river basin management that preserves both the lowland main-channel habitat and the upstream spawning reaches it migrates into seasonally.
