Hypselobarbus kurali was formally described by A. G. K. Menon and P. Rema Devi in 1995. The genus Hypselobarbus was established for a group of large Indian barbs, and the species has remained under that combination; it was not carried historically under the catch-all genus Puntius that absorbed many smaller South Asian barbs. Hypselobarbus is a genus of relatively large, deep-bodied cyprinids confined to peninsular India, particularly the Western Ghats drainage systems. The group has been subject to ongoing taxonomic revision as molecular studies clarify relationships among the large Indian barbs and their affinities with the broader South Asian cyprinid fauna. The species epithet kurali is not widely parsed in available literature; the India Biodiversity Portal and FishBase both confirm the authority and the 1995 date of description.
Morphology
Hypselobarbus kurali is a large barb, recorded to a maximum total length of 14 in. The body is deep and laterally compressed with the elevated back profile characteristic of the genus. The mouth is positioned ventrally and angled downward, an adaptation for substrate grazing on macrophytes, periphyton and bottom-associated invertebrates.
