Taxonomy & naming
Hypselobarbus lithopidos was described by Francis Day in 1874, originally placed in the genus Barbus — the broad Old World barb genus that once accommodated virtually all large-bodied Old World cyprinids. The species was subsequently carried under Puntius in older Indian ichthyology literature, the catch-all genus that housed most South and Southeast Asian barbs until a comprehensive revision by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 redrew the boundaries. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current combination as Hypselobarbus lithopidos (Day, 1874), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Day's original genus.
The genus Hypselobarbus was established for the large barbs of peninsular India — fishes that reach considerably greater size than the ornamental Puntius-grade barbs and that are associated with clear, fast, rocky rivers of the Western Ghats and associated drainages. Several species in the genus are poorly documented in the primary literature and data on some, including H. lithopidos, remain sparse. Older references to "Puntius lithopidos" or "Barbus lithopidos" in Indian fisheries literature refer to the same species.
Morphology
Hypselobarbus lithopidos shares the general body plan of the genus: a robust, laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied barb with a large head and a well-developed mouth bearing two pairs of barbels. The scales are large and cycloid, and the overall build is that of a fish adapted for life in current — more fusiform and muscular than the ornamental barbs, with a strong caudal peduncle.
Detailed morphometric data for H. lithopidos specifically are sparse in the accessible literature. As with other members of Hypselobarbus, the species is expected to reach a considerably larger adult size than aquarium-scale barbs; other congeners in the genus range into the 12–23.5 in class. Colouration in life likely follows the family pattern of a silvery to olive-gold flank, paler ventrally, with dark-edged scales giving a reticulate sheen. Specific colour markings distinguishing H. lithopidos from sympatric congeners have not been fully characterised in the open literature.
Habitat
Hypselobarbus lithopidos is a Western Ghats endemic, native to rivers draining the Canara region — the stretch of the Western Ghats corresponding broadly to the Karnataka and northern Kerala coast. The Canara drainages are fast-moving, rocky hill streams that descend steeply to the coastal plain and are characterised by high dissolved oxygen, clear to lightly turbid water, and substrates of bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel.
Like other large barbs in the genus, H. lithopidos is associated with the cooler, faster reaches of these rivers — the hill-stream and upper-river zones where temperature remains relatively low and oxygen saturation high. Water chemistry in the Western Ghats hill rivers is typically soft to moderately hard and near-neutral to mildly acidic, reflecting the granitic and gneissic parent geology of the region. The species is not documented from lentic habitats or from the warmer, slower lowland reaches where larger rivers approach the coast.
Feeding
Hypselobarbus lithopidos is understood to be omnivorous in the manner typical of large riverine barbs, feeding on a combination of algae, submerged and terrestrial plant matter, small aquatic invertebrates and organic detritus encountered over the rocky substrate. The two pairs of barbels suggest a bottom-associated foraging style, probing among gravel and rock surfaces for edible material.
Data on feeding ecology specific to this species in the wild are not well documented in the accessible literature. By analogy with well-studied congeners in the Western Ghats, a significant proportion of the diet likely consists of periphyton and aufwuchs scraped from rock surfaces, supplemented by benthic invertebrates such as insect larvae and molluscs. Seasonal variation in diet probably mirrors the monsoon-driven fluctuation in primary productivity and invertebrate availability that characterises Western Ghats rivers.
Mating
Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus lithopidos is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. Reproductive activity in large Western Ghats riverine barbs is typically seasonal, triggered by the onset of the monsoon rains, when rising water levels, increased flow, and the flush of freshwater downstream cue spawning migrations and courtship.
In the reproductive act, a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or over the rocky substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in open water or over gravel. The adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs settle among stones and are then abandoned. Adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning, and in the confined space of a breeding aggregation the eggs are at risk of being consumed by other fish in the vicinity.
Breeding
Natural reproduction in Hypselobarbus lithopidos takes place in the river environment and is governed by the monsoon cycle that defines seasonal hydrology across the Western Ghats. As with other large Indian river barbs, spawning is likely to occur over gravel beds in flowing water, with no parental care beyond the act of egg deposition. Fecundity in large-bodied barbs is typically high, compensating for the absence of any brood protection.
There are no published accounts of captive breeding of H. lithopidos. The species is not an established aquarium fish, and the logistical challenges of maintaining large riverine barbs under aquarium conditions — combined with the species' restricted range and conservation sensitivity — mean that controlled breeding records are absent from the hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Hypselobarbus lithopidos is not a species of the aquarium trade. It is a large, fast-water endemic from a restricted range in the Western Ghats, and it does not appear in the ornamental fish literature as a kept species. Even if specimens were to become available, the size that congeners in the genus attain would demand very large, well-filtered aquaria with strong water movement and high oxygen levels, reflecting the cool, fast-flowing rivers the species inhabits in nature.
The fish has no meaningful presence in hobbyist or trade records, and its conservation status in the wild makes collection inadvisable. Interest in the species comes from the ichthyological and conservation communities rather than from the aquarium hobby.
Conservation
Hypselobarbus lithopidos has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — it is one of a number of Western Ghats endemic barbs that remain outside the assessment process. The Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, however, is under significant and well-documented pressure. The freshwater fish fauna of the region faces threats from dam construction and river impoundment, water extraction for agriculture and human consumption, mining and quarrying of river gravel and sand, agricultural runoff and pesticide use, and the broader degradation of riparian vegetation.
For a species with a restricted range tied to fast-flowing hill streams in the Canara region, any loss of watershed integrity is likely to be consequential. Deforestation in the catchment reduces stream shading and raises water temperatures, while siltation from land clearance degrades the rocky substrate on which the species depends. The genus Hypselobarbus as a whole includes several species assessed as threatened on the IUCN Red List, underscoring the vulnerability of this guild of large, range-restricted Western Ghats endemics.
