Taxonomy & naming
Hypselobarbus micropogon was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1842, in volume 16 of the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons co-authored with Georges Cuvier. The type locality is Mysore, India, and the holotype is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN 0000-1404). Valenciennes placed the species in the genus Barbus, and it was later treated under Gonoproktopterus by Talwar and Jhingran (1991) before its current placement in Hypselobarbus was recognised. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Hypselobarbus micropogon (Valenciennes, 1842), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Valenciennes's original genus.
Hypselobarbus is a genus of large South Asian barbs restricted to the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot and Sri Lanka. The genus was separated from the old, ecologically broad Puntius aggregate as part of the wider revision of South and Southeast Asian cyprinids that followed Pethiyagoda et al. (2012). Within Hypselobarbus the species has been grouped informally with other large Cauvery river barbs, sharing the genus's characteristic robust body plan and migratory life history.
Morphology
Hypselobarbus micropogon is a large, deep-bodied barb that can reach 35.5 in total length, making it one of the bigger species in its genus. Like other members of Hypselobarbus it is robust and laterally compressed, with a moderately elevated back and the strong, tapering caudal peduncle typical of powerful river swimmers. The common name 'micropogon' derives from Greek roots meaning 'small beard', likely referring to reduced or vestigial barbels.
Detailed published morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the genus as a whole shares large scales, a relatively long head, and the general architecture of a fish adapted to holding station in strong current over rocky substrates. Coloration in large river barbs of this group is typically silvery to brassy on the flanks, often with darker or more intense pigment along the dorsal surface, though specific colour descriptions for wild-caught H. micropogon are not well documented in English-language sources.
Habitat
The Korhi barb occupies the deeper parts of large streams and rivers along the base of the Western Ghats, particularly within the Cauvery drainage — including the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary region in Karnataka. It favours rocky, fast-flowing reaches where currents are strong and the water is well oxygenated, consistent with the classification of the species on FishBase as benthopelagic and potamodromous (migratory within freshwater). It is recorded as spawning in the upper Cauvery, suggesting a seasonal upstream migration to headwater zones for reproduction.
Regional studies of Western Ghats streams document mean water temperatures around 75–77 °F with a realistic range of approximately 63–81 °F across seasons and elevations, a mean pH close to 6.6 with a typical range of roughly 6.8–7.5 in the rocky reaches the species prefers, and soft to moderately hard water. These hill-river conditions — cool, swift, well-oxygenated, near-neutral, and with a rocky substrate — define the core niche of H. micropogon within the Cauvery system.
Feeding
FishBase records the trophic level of Hypselobarbus micropogon at 2.0, placing it at the lower end of the food web and consistent with a predominantly herbivorous or detritivorous diet. The species feeds on organic debris and plant matter, as is characteristic of large-bodied Hypselobarbus barbs that graze along rocky riverbed surfaces and in the deeper mid-water zones of fast rivers.
In the broader context of large Western Ghats barbs, individuals likely also opportunistically consume algae, biofilm, and invertebrates dislodged by current from rocky substrates, though the relative proportions in the diet of H. micropogon specifically have not been quantified in detail in the available literature. Its high fishing vulnerability score (56 out of 100 on the FishBase index) reflects both its large size and the relatively slow life-history pace associated with low trophic-level, slow-growing large barbs.
Mating
Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus micropogon is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. The species is potamodromous, undertaking seasonal migrations within the Cauvery system to reach spawning grounds in the upper river. These migrations are typical of large riverine barbs and mahseers across South and Southeast Asia, where rising water levels and cooler upstream conditions in the pre-monsoon or monsoon period trigger reproductive movement.
Courting males pursue gravid females over the rocky substrate, releasing eggs and milt together in characteristic barb fashion. There is no pair bond, no nest, and no territory held beyond the transient activity of spawning; the broadcast eggs receive no attention from either parent after fertilisation. The large body size of adult H. micropogon is consistent with a long-lived species that spawns across multiple seasons rather than making a single terminal reproductive effort.
Breeding
Hypselobarbus micropogon scatters adhesive eggs over the rocky substrates and gravel beds of the upper Cauvery during seasonal spawning migrations. No parental care is provided; once spawning is complete the adults return downstream, and the eggs and larvae develop unattended in the gravel interstices of the fast-flowing upper-river habitat.
There are no published accounts of captive breeding of this species, which is not currently maintained in the ornamental aquarium trade. Its large adult size, migratory life history, and specific habitat requirements make controlled reproduction under aquarium conditions essentially impractical. Conservation-focused captive-breeding efforts, should they be attempted, would require large, flow-through facilities that simulate the cooler, high-oxygen conditions of the upper Cauvery — a challenge that has not yet been documented in the literature for this species.
In the aquarium
Hypselobarbus micropogon is not a fish for the ornamental aquarium. At up to 35.5 in total length, potamodromous in habit, and adapted to the deep, powerful, well-oxygenated currents of large Western Ghats rivers, it is far beyond the practical capacity of any home aquarium and is not available in the ornamental trade. FishBase notes commercial fisheries and sport fishing as its principal human uses; it is a quarry species in the rivers of Karnataka and the Nilgiris, not an aquarium subject.

Aquarists interested in large Indian barbs who have access to appropriately scaled public aquarium or research facilities should note that all large Hypselobarbus require strong, clean, well-oxygenated current, cool to moderate temperatures, and significant unobstructed swimming space — and that collection from the wild is constrained by the species' Endangered status.
Conservation
Hypselobarbus micropogon is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2021, criteria B2ab(ii,iii)), reflecting a restricted area of occupancy combined with continuing decline in the quality of its riverine habitat. The species is a Western Ghats endemic, one of the world's most species-rich and most threatened biodiversity hotspots, and its dependence on the Cauvery drainage — a river system under intense pressure from irrigation extraction, dams, sand mining, and agricultural and domestic pollution — compounds the risk.
Commercial fisheries and sport fishing contribute additional pressure on wild populations; as a large, slow-maturing fish it is particularly vulnerable to overexploitation. Regional biodiversity surveys have documented the species in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, but the continuing degradation of rocky hill-stream habitat within and adjacent to the sanctuary is a concern. Effective conservation will require both habitat protection in the upper Cauvery catchment and regulation of the fishery that targets this and the other large barbs of the Western Ghats.
