Hypselobarbus mussullah, the mussullah barb or humpback mahseer, is one of the largest freshwater fishes of peninsular India — a deep-bodied, fast-water cyprinid reaching 59 in in total length and 90 kg, recorded from the Krishna river system of the Western Ghats and Deccan Plateau. It inhabits the clear, fast-flowing reaches of large upland rivers and is the type species of the genus Hypselobarbus Bleeker, 1860. Although once valued as a premier gamefish and commercially important food species, populations have declined sharply as a result of river damming, habitat degradation, and overfishing; the species is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus mussullah was described by the British naturalist William Henry Sykes in 1839 from the Ghod River near Dirur in Maharashtra, then part of the Deccan, under the name Barbus mussullah. Sykes's original account appeared in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1838, volume 6, pages 157–165), a monograph on the fishes of the Deccan Plateau. The parenthetical authority in the current name records the subsequent transfer out of Barbus.

The genus Hypselobarbus was erected by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1860, and H. mussullah is its type species — the name-bearing specimen around which the entire genus concept is anchored. Hypselobarbus is a South Indian endemic group of large, fast-water barbs broadly related to the mahseers (Tor) but occupying their own lineage within the Cyprinidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Hypselobarbus mussullah (Sykes, 1839).

The species was long placed in the broad genus Puntius, and older Indian ichthyological literature and fisheries reports frequently use the combination Puntius mussullah or Barbus mussullah. Under current systematics those names are junior synonyms; the valid genus for this species is Hypselobarbus.

Morphology

Hypselobarbus mussullah is a large, deep-bodied barb with the pronounced dorsal hump that gives it the vernacular name humpback mahseer. FishBase records a maximum total length of 59 in for males, with a common length of around 41.5 in TL and a maximum documented weight of 90 kg — making it one of the largest freshwater fishes in peninsular India. Its high back and laterally compressed body distinguish it from the more torpedo-shaped true mahseers (Tor spp.) of Himalayan rivers.

As with most large river cyprinids, the species has moderately large scales, a terminal to subterminal mouth suited for picking food from the bottom and mid-water, and well-developed pharyngeal teeth for processing hard-shelled invertebrates and plant material. The colouration in life is not in detail in the available cache sources, but large Hypselobarbus species typically show a silvery to brassy body with darker dorsal surfaces.

Habitat

The mussullah barb inhabits the deeper sections of clear, fast-flowing large rivers and jungle streams in upland areas of peninsular India. It is a rheophilic species — strongly associated with well-oxygenated, turbulent water over rocky and gravelly substrates — characteristic of the Western Ghats and Deccan river systems where clean, high-gradient reaches persist.

The species is recorded from the Krishna river system in Karnataka and Maharashtra, and possibly from the Godavari drainage, as well as from Kerala rivers. The rivers of the Western Ghats are rain-fed and highly seasonal: the southwest monsoon (June–September) transforms them from relatively low, clear, and fast-flowing streams into turbid, high-discharge floods, with pronounced changes in depth, temperature, water chemistry, and flow rate across the year. The mussullah barb likely exploits these seasonal pulses for feeding and spawning migrations, as is typical for large Indian river cyprinids.

Feeding

Large Hypselobarbus species are opportunistic omnivores in the wild, feeding on a combination of aquatic invertebrates, algae, plant detritus, fallen fruits, and organic material picked from the substrate and water column. The deep body, large size, and pharyngeal dentition of H. mussullah are consistent with a diet that includes hard-shelled prey and coarser plant material alongside softer invertebrates.

FishBase records very high vulnerability to fishing pressure, which reflects both the species' size and its tendency to gather at predictable feeding and spawning sites in clear rivers — concentrations that have historically made it accessible to commercial and subsistence fishermen. No detailed stomach-content studies are captured in the available sources, but the ecology of congeners and comparable large Indian barbs supports a broad, generalist foraging strategy.

Mating

Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus mussullah is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large river barbs of this type are typically seasonal, migratory broadcast spawners that undertake upstream movements during or just before the monsoon to reach clean, fast, well-oxygenated gravel runs for spawning. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and no parental care of any kind.

Males drive and pursue gravid females at spawning sites, with eggs and milt released together over gravel or rocky substrate in fast water. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle into the interstices of the gravel, developing in the high-oxygen current with no adult attendance. This reproductive strategy, common to large mahseer-like barbs across South Asia, leaves fertilised eggs vulnerable to siltation — one reason habitat degradation from dam releases and catchment erosion is particularly damaging to recruitment.

Breeding

Hypselobarbus mussullah has not been reported as bred in aquaria, and there is no established captive-breeding protocol for the species. The combination of its very large adult size, requirement for fast, well-oxygenated water, and likely dependence on seasonal flow cues and upstream migration for spawning makes it essentially impossible to maintain or breed in standard aquarium or even large pond facilities.

In the wild, breeding is presumed to follow the seasonal monsoon pattern typical of large Indian river cyprinids: upstream migration, spawning over gravel in fast, clear water, and downstream drift of larvae after hatching. Eggs receive no parental care; adults scatter eggs over substrate and do not return to the spawning site. The species' very high vulnerability index on FishBase reflects slow recruitment relative to fishing pressure.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus mussullah is not a species suited to the aquarium hobby. Adults routinely exceed 1 metre in total length and 90 kg in weight, making any realistic aquarium maintenance impossible. Even juveniles grow rapidly and would quickly outgrow all but the largest public aquarium installations.

FishBase notes the species is occasionally represented in the aquarium trade — presumably as juveniles exported from India — but it is not a fish that can be recommended for private keeping at any practical scale. Any serious interest in this species is better directed toward in-situ conservation efforts in the Western Ghats river systems it inhabits.

Conservation

Hypselobarbus mussullah is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with assessments published in 2011 and 2013. Populations have declined substantially across the species' limited native range in the Western Ghats and Deccan river systems of peninsular India, driven primarily by river damming and associated habitat degradation, along with intensive commercial and subsistence fishing pressure.

The species is endemic to India, recorded from the Krishna river system and possibly the Godavari basin in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala. As a large, slow-maturing fish dependent on free-flowing, clear, oxygenated rivers, it is acutely sensitive to the impoundment and flow regulation that have transformed much of the Deccan river network over the past half-century. Water abstraction for agriculture, pollution from catchment land-use changes, and sedimentation of formerly clean gravel-bed spawning reaches compound the dam-related threats.

Hypselobarbus mussullah holds commercial and cultural importance as a food fish and historically as a gamefish in the Deccan, but this prominence has also made it a target for intensive fishing. Its recovery depends on habitat restoration, flow-regime management, and active protection of remaining free-flowing reaches in the Western Ghats — a region globally recognised for freshwater biodiversity.
