Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis is a large freshwater barb described in 2016 from the rivers of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats of southern India. Known from the Bhavani River at Nellithurai in Tamil Nadu and from the Noolpuzha River in Wayanad, Kerala — both tributaries draining the upper Cauvery basin — it is a regional endemic tied to the cool, fast-flowing hill streams that originate in the mountain sholas and grasslands of the Nilgiris. Reaching over 12 in in standard length, it belongs to the genus Hypselobarbus, a group of large cyprinids native to the river systems of peninsular India and Sri Lanka, and represents the considerable fish biodiversity hidden within a globally significant conservation hotspot.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis was formally described by Arunachalam, Chinnaraja and Mayden in 2016, with the type locality given as the Bhavani River at Nellithurai, within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India. The species was described directly under the genus Hypselobarbus — there is no earlier combination under Puntius or Barbus for this name, as the description post-dates the major revision of South Asian barbine fishes.

The genus Hypselobarbus was long treated as a subgenus or synonym of the broad catch-all genus Puntius, but it has been recognised at genus rank for a suite of large, often robust cyprinids endemic to peninsular India and Sri Lanka. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis Arunachalam, Chinnaraja & Mayden, 2016. A related species, Hypselobarbus dubius, is also endemic to the same Nilgiri region, indicating that these hill-stream drainages support a distinct and locally diversified barbine fauna.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum size of 12.5 in standard length for this species, placing it among the larger members of the genus Hypselobarbus. Like its congeners it is a robustly built, deep-bodied cyprinid with the general body form typical of large river barbs — laterally compressed, with a high back, a moderately pointed snout, and well-developed barbels. The species is benthopelagic in habit, suggesting it moves through the water column but maintains a close association with the riverbed.

Detailed morphological data beyond size are sparse in the available literature for this recently described species. Its coloration and precise fin-ray and scale counts are given in the original description from 2016, but secondary hobbyist or photographic documentation is limited, reflecting the difficulty of accessing the remote hill-stream localities within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Habitat

Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis is known from two river systems within or adjacent to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve: the Bhavani River at Nellithurai in Tamil Nadu, and the Noolpuzha River in Wayanad, Kerala. Both are tributaries of the upper Cauvery drainage. These rivers originate in the high shola forests and montane grasslands of the Nilgiris, flowing as relatively cool, well-oxygenated hill streams over rocky and gravelly beds before descending toward the plains.

The broader ecological setting is one of the most biologically rich freshwater zones in India. Rivers of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve support a high proportion of endemic fish species, many of them restricted to short reaches within particular drainage systems. Water chemistry data specific to this species are sparse, but the hill-stream character of its known localities implies cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated conditions with near-neutral to mildly acidic pH, typical of Western Ghats montane rivers.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies have been published for Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis specifically. Large Hypselobarbus species are generally omnivorous, foraging over and among rocky substrates for algae, biofilm, aquatic invertebrates, plant matter and organic detritus — a pattern consistent with their benthic associations in rocky hill rivers. The robust body and strong jaw typical of the genus suit a fish capable of processing a variety of food types encountered on and near the riverbed.

In the absence of species-specific data, the feeding ecology of H. nilgiriensis is best inferred from closely related congeners inhabiting similar Western Ghats rivers, where large Hypselobarbus species are known to be opportunistic and to exploit seasonal food pulses in rivers with marked wet and dry seasons.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the broader barbine group, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with all other barbs. Large river barbines typically spawn seasonally, with courtship driven by the onset of monsoon flows, rising water temperatures and increased discharge that stimulate reproductive readiness.

In large river barbines generally, males pursue and drive gravid females through the current or over gravel beds, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. No pair bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond the brief act of spawning. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs sink among gravel or cobble, receiving no further parental attention.

Breeding

Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis has not been bred in captivity to any documented extent, and no aquarium breeding reports exist in the available literature. Large Western Ghats barbines are rarely kept in hobbyist aquaria and are essentially unknown in the ornamental trade; captive breeding programs, where they exist, are conservation-driven rather than commercial.

Based on the biology of related large Hypselobarbus and comparable Indian hill-stream barbs, spawning would be seasonal and triggered by monsoon-associated environmental cues — increasing river flow, falling water temperature, and photoperiod changes. Eggs are scattered over gravel or rocky substrate with no parental care; adults provide no guarding of eggs or fry.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. At over 12 in standard length, it requires large volumes of cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water that only a very large, purpose-built system could provide. No trade specimens are known, and the species is protected within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which limits collection. It is essentially a fish of conservation and scientific interest rather than the hobby.

For aquarists interested in large Indian barbines, the broader genus Hypselobarbus and related Western Ghats cyprinids represent a significant component of a highly threatened endemic fauna. Their aquarium requirements — cool temperatures, strong flow, high oxygen, and large space — are demanding, and captive holding is most appropriate in the context of ex-situ conservation rather than private fishkeeping.

Conservation

Hypselobarbus nilgiriensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described only in 2016 and may not yet have been evaluated. Its known range is restricted to two river systems within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — the Bhavani River in Tamil Nadu and the Noolpuzha River in Wayanad, Kerala — making it a narrow-range endemic highly vulnerable to any deterioration of those specific water bodies.

The Western Ghats, including the Nilgiri massif, is one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots and supports an extraordinary proportion of endemic freshwater fish, a large fraction of which are threatened or data-deficient. Pressures on hill-stream rivers in the region include agricultural runoff, water extraction for irrigation, hydroelectric development, and siltation from land clearance. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve provides some degree of formal protection, but enforcement and habitat integrity vary across the reserve's river catchments. Given its apparently tiny range, H. nilgiriensis merits formal IUCN assessment and targeted monitoring of its known localities.
