Hypselobarbus periyarensis is a large, deep-bodied freshwater cyprinid endemic to the Periyar River system of Kerala in the Western Ghats, India — one of the world's great biodiversity hotspots. Described by Raj in 1941, it is distinguished among Western Ghats barbs by a long, strongly serrated dorsal spine that exceeds both the head length and the body depth, and by its moderately deep, laterally compressed profile. The species is restricted to a single drainage, qualifies as Endangered under the IUCN Red List criteria, and faces ongoing pressure from habitat degradation, sedimentation and its vanishingly small range.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus periyarensis was described by B. S. Raj in 1941 from specimens collected in the upper reaches of the Periyar River near Peeramade, Kerala. The species has accumulated a string of historical names that chart the turbulent taxonomy of South Asian cyprinids: it appears in older literature as Barbus periyarensis, Barbus micropogon periyarensis, Gonoproktopterus periyarensis, and Puntius micropogon periyarensis, reflecting successive generic rearrangements. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises the current valid combination as Hypselobarbus periyarensis Raj, 1941.

The genus Hypselobarbus was erected to receive a group of large, robust barbs endemic to peninsular India — particularly the Western Ghats — that were previously housed within the sprawling, now-dismembered genus Puntius. The post-2012 restructuring of South Asian cyprinids by Pethiyagoda and colleagues clarified the limits of these genera, and Hypselobarbus now stands as the appropriate name for this assemblage of deep-spined, large-bodied Indian barbs.

The Periyar River, which gives the species its epithet, rises in the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats and flows westward through Kerala to the Arabian Sea. Much of its upper catchment is protected as the Periyar Tiger Reserve, though this affords only partial protection to the aquatic fauna within it.

Morphology

Hypselobarbus periyarensis is a large barb with a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, capable of reaching at least 19.5 in total length — a size placing it well within the "big barb" tier of the family. Its most diagnostic feature is the long, stout dorsal spine, which is armed with strong posterior serrations and exceeds both the head length and the body depth in adults, making it immediately distinguishable from related Hypselobarbus species in the same waters.

The species bears two pairs of barbels — a characteristic of the genus — and has a complete lateral line carrying 42–43 scales. The body is benthopelagic in lifestyle, consistent with a fish that works the middle and lower water column in flowing rivers. Coloration in wild fish is not extensively documented in accessible sources; the deep body and large size suggest the pale to silvery flanks typical of large rheophilic cyprinids.

Habitat

This species is known only from the Periyar River system in Kerala, with the type locality recorded as the upper Periyar River near Peeramade in the hill reaches of the Western Ghats. It is a freshwater fish associated with the faster, better-oxygenated sections of hill rivers, where water runs over sand, pebbles and grey stone substrate — conditions typical of upper-catchment Western Ghats streams.

Biotope data for the Periyar River itself records temperatures of 73–82 °F, pH values typically around 8 (though the range across seasons spans 5.72–8.74), very low hardness (GH approximately 15 mg/l), and dissolved oxygen around 6%. Water clarity varies; turbidity and sediment load increase downstream and are elevated by erosion and human activity. Substrate in collecting areas includes river sands, pebbles, stones and accumulated leaf material, with slow to moderate current in shallower pools.

Sympat­ric species sharing Periyar River habitats include Dawkinsia denisonii (the red-line torpedo barb), Devario aequipinnatus, various Garra and Nemacheilus species, and Tor putitora — indicating a typical Western Ghats hill-river ichthyofaunal community.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Hypselobarbus periyarensis specifically has been published in accessible sources. Large Hypselobarbus species in general are considered omnivores that exploit the benthopelagic zone, consuming invertebrates, plant material, algae, and organic detritus gleaned from rocky and sandy substrates in flowing water — a foraging strategy shared by similarly sized mahseer-grade barbs across the Western Ghats.

The species' benthopelagic habit and the riverine substrate of its habitat — sand, pebbles and leaf litter — suggest it feeds on benthic invertebrates, algae, and surface-fallen material much as other large barbs of the region do. In the aquarium, large barbs of this group are typically maintained on high-quality pellets, fresh vegetables and occasional meaty supplements.

Mating

Hypselobarbus periyarensis, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act, and neither parent guards eggs or larvae. Large river barbs and mahseer-grade species in the Western Ghats are typically seasonal broadcast spawners that move upstream to gravel reaches when monsoon rains raise water levels and temperatures fluctuate.

Courtship in large barbs generally involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female over or through the substrate, with eggs and milt released simultaneously before the adults disperse. The adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs settle among gravel and are left entirely unattended. Spawning behaviour specific to H. periyarensis in the wild has not been described in published sources accessible here.

Breeding

No captive-breeding record for Hypselobarbus periyarensis is documented in accessible sources, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. As an Endangered endemic with a single-river range, it does not circulate among hobbyists. Like other large Western Ghats barbs, any breeding in the wild is presumed to occur seasonally — likely tied to the southwest monsoon and associated river flooding that triggers upstream migration to gravel spawning grounds.

In line with all barbs, the mode is egg-scattering with no parental care: eggs and milt are shed over a gravel or coarse substrate and the adults play no further role. Fecundity in large barbs is typically high, which partly offsets the absence of egg protection. For this species, specific incubation times and larval development data are not published in accessible literature.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus periyarensis is not kept in the ornamental hobby and is effectively unavailable in the aquarium trade. Its status as an Endangered endemic to a single Indian river system, combined with its large potential size of up to 19.5 in, makes it unsuitable for home aquaria and unlikely to be collected legally for the hobby.

The Periyar River habitat data — temperatures 73–82 °F, near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, low hardness, and well-oxygenated flowing water — describes the conditions a large barb of this type would require. Any institutional or research setting housing the species would need a large flow-through system replicating warm, soft, oxygenated Western Ghats river conditions. Conservation

Hypselobarbus periyarensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 10 June 2010. The Endangered listing reflects the species' extremely restricted endemic range — confined to the Periyar River system in Kerala — and ongoing deterioration of freshwater habitat quality within that range. A species restricted to a single river system is inherently vulnerable to any localised disturbance, and the Periyar faces pressure from agriculture, sedimentation, water extraction, and pollution despite the partial protection of the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

The Western Ghats is a global biodiversity hotspot and one of the world's most threatened freshwater fish regions, with a high proportion of endemic cyprinids facing varying degrees of threat from the same suite of pressures: hydropower development, encroachment on riparian zones, and increasing demand on water resources. H. periyarensis, as a large-bodied species, is also potentially vulnerable to subsistence fishing, although targeted harvest data are not available in accessible sources.

Conservation of this species depends on protecting the integrity of the upper Periyar catchment, controlling sedimentation, and maintaining adequate water flows in the river — priorities that overlap with the goals of the broader Periyar Tiger Reserve but require active freshwater-specific management attention.
