Taxonomy & naming
Hypselobarbus procerus was formally described in 2022 by the Indian ichthyologist Mathews Plamoottil, making it among the more recently named members of its genus. The type locality is the Attappady area of Kerala, in the southern Western Ghats. No earlier synonym or provisional combination under Puntius or Barbus appears to have been established — unlike many of its close relatives, whose pre-2012 history involved the old catch-all genus Puntius — so procerus appears in the literature under Hypselobarbus from the outset.
The genus Hypselobarbus is restricted to peninsular India, with around thirteen recognised species distributed across the Western Ghats and coastal river systems of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The group belongs to the family Cyprinidae (subfamily Smiliogastrinae in some arrangements) and is allied to the barb radiation of South and Southeast Asia that was substantially revised in the wake of Pethiyagoda et al.'s 2012 systematic work on South Asian Puntius relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Hypselobarbus procerus Plamoottil, 2022.
The specific epithet procerus is from the Latin for "tall" or "slender", likely referring to a distinctive body proportion in the type material, though details remain sparse in the primary literature as of the time of writing.
Morphology
No detailed morphometric data for Hypselobarbus procerus has been published in accessible secondary sources since its 2022 description, and reliable size figures are not yet available. The genus Hypselobarbus encompasses large river barbs: some members (H. curmuca, H. jerdoni) attain 12–19.5 in or more, making them among the largest cyprinids in the Western Ghats.
In body plan, Hypselobarbus barbs are deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish with a moderately large head, relatively large scales, and a simple non-serrated last unbranched dorsal ray — a character distinguishing them from the related mahseers of the genus Tor. The lips are thin and the snout is moderately pointed. Colouration in the genus is typically silvery to olive-gold on the flanks with a pale underside; some species show a dark lateral stripe or scattered dark scale margins. Specific colouration and fin detail for H. procerus await fuller description.
Sexual dimorphism in the genus follows the general barb pattern: females become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid, while males may show breeding tubercles on the snout. Beyond this, species-specific dimorphic characters for H. procerus have not been documented in available literature.
Habitat
Hypselobarbus procerus is recorded from the Attappady region of the Palakkad district, Kerala, within the southern Western Ghats. The Attappady valley drains into the Bharathapuzha (Nila) river system, which is one of the major west-flowing rivers of Kerala. Like other members of the genus, H. procerus almost certainly inhabits clear, fast-flowing, rocky hill rivers and streams — habitats characterised by high dissolved oxygen, moderate to cool temperatures (broadly 68–79 °F for related Western Ghats species), and a substrate of boulders, cobbles and gravel.
The Western Ghats is a global biodiversity hotspot, and its freshwater fish fauna — including the entire genus Hypselobarbus — shows a high degree of river-basin endemism. Habitat in the Attappady area is heavily influenced by the seasonal monsoon, with pronounced variation in flow and temperature between the wet season (June–September) and the dry season. Forest cover of the riparian corridor and catchment strongly affects water clarity and substrate quality.
Data specifically resolving the microhabitat, depth preference or seasonal movements of H. procerus are not yet published in accessible form given the recent date of description.
Feeding
Feeding ecology for Hypselobarbus procerus has not been documented in detail. Across the genus, the dietary pattern is one of opportunistic omnivory biased toward plant material, aufwuchs (algae and periphyton scraped from rocks), fallen fruits and seeds, and benthic invertebrates. Larger species are capable of taking substantial plant matter and may play an important role as seed dispersers in their river systems. Invertebrate prey — insect larvae, crustaceans, worms — supplements the diet, particularly in juveniles.
The rocky, fast-flowing riverine habitat typical of Hypselobarbus is rich in diatoms and biofilm on smooth boulders, and the mouth morphology of the genus (thin lips, moderately subterminal position) is consistent with grazing on hard substrates as well as picking at loose benthic material. In the aquarium, related species accept a wide variety of foods including sinking pellets, blanched vegetables and live or frozen invertebrates.
Mating
Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus procerus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific account of the species' mating behaviour exists in the published literature, but the reproductive pattern of the genus follows the cyprinid broadcast-spawner model: at appropriate seasonal cues — rising water levels, warming or cooling temperatures, increased flow — a gravid female is pursued by one or more males, and eggs and milt are released simultaneously over suitable substrate such as gravel or submerged vegetation.
There is no pair bond, no territory maintained beyond brief courtship interactions, and no nest construction. In larger river barbs and mahseers the spawning migration can be substantial, with fish moving upstream to clean, shallow, fast-flowing gravel reaches for breeding. Whether H. procerus undertakes such movements has not been documented. Males do not guard eggs or fry after spawning.
Breeding
No captive breeding account for Hypselobarbus procerus has been published. For the genus as a whole, captive reproduction is infrequently documented outside of aquaculture trials for commercially important relatives such as H. curmuca. Where it has been achieved, the pattern matches other large river barbs: seasonal conditioning, large water volumes, and the stimulus of simulated rains or fresh cool water triggers spawning. Eggs are scattered over gravel or amongst submerged vegetation and receive no parental care; adults may consume eggs and should be separated from the spawning site promptly.
Fecundity in large river barbs is generally high, befitting the broadcast-spawning, no-care reproductive mode. Eggs hatch within a few days at typical riverine temperatures, and larvae are initially sustained by yolk before becoming free-feeding. For a species only described in 2022 and not yet established in the aquarium hobby, detailed breeding information does not currently exist.
In the aquarium
Hypselobarbus procerus is not established in the aquarium hobby as of 2026. The genus as a whole is rarely traded; individual species occasionally appear in specialist collections in India and very rarely in international trade. Given the likely adult size — probably in the range of 8–15.5 in consistent with related Hypselobarbus species — H. procerus would require a very large aquarium with strong filtration and high water flow to replicate its native fast-river habitat.
Water parameters for related Western Ghats species suggest clear, well-oxygenated conditions at moderate temperatures (around 68–79 °F), with a near-neutral pH and moderate hardness reflecting the geology of the Ghats. Being an active, large-bodied cyprinid, H. procerus would need substantial swimming space and companions of appropriate size. Dietary requirements would be met by a varied diet of plant material, sinking pellets and live or frozen invertebrates. Collection from its restricted endemic range raises conservation concerns, and keeping this species outside its home country may be subject to Indian wildlife regulation.
Conservation
Hypselobarbus procerus has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species was described in 2022 and no formal evaluation has been completed. Given that it is known from a restricted type locality in the Attappady valley of Kerala — a fragmented landscape in the southern Western Ghats — caution about its status is warranted even in the absence of an official assessment.
The Western Ghats freshwater fish fauna faces multiple compounding pressures. Agricultural expansion, sand mining, damming for irrigation and hydroelectric power, water extraction for plantation crops, and domestic and industrial pollution all degrade the rocky hill-river habitats on which Hypselobarbus depends. The Attappady area in particular has experienced significant deforestation and land-use change over recent decades, which affects stream flow permanence, water temperature and sediment load. Narrowly endemic species with small ranges are disproportionately vulnerable to such localised degradation.
The entire genus Hypselobarbus is treated with concern in Indian freshwater conservation literature; several congeners (H. periyarensis, H. lithopidos, H. kurali) are known only from single river systems and face similar pressures. The status of H. procerus should be formally evaluated by the IUCN as monitoring data accumulate.
