Taxonomy & naming
Hypselobarbus pseudomussullah was formally described in 2016 by Muthukumarasamy Arunachalam, Sivadoss Chinnaraja and Richard Lee Mayden in the journal FishTaxa, with the type locality given as the Thunga River, Karnataka, India. The species epithet pseudomussullah — from the Greek pseudo- (false) and the species name mussullah — signals the close resemblance to H. mussullah, which it mimics in overall form but from which it differs in meristic details.
The genus Hypselobarbus was historically treated as synonymous with Barbus or Puntius in older literature. It encompasses a group of large-bodied barbs endemic to the Indian subcontinent, particularly the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot and the river systems of peninsular India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Hypselobarbus as the valid genus for this assemblage. H. pseudomussullah is separated from its nearest relative H. mussullah by a consistently lower lateral-line scale count of 41–42 (versus 44 in H. mussullah) and 12–13 pre-dorsal scales (versus 14), in addition to its distinct geographic distribution. Both species inhabit the Krishna basin or its tributaries, suggesting the two were at one point conflated in older records.
Morphology
Hypselobarbus pseudomussullah is a benthopelagic, fusiform barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 9.5 in, placing it firmly among the larger members of the Western Ghats barb fauna. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, well-suited to life in current. It bears two pairs of barbels, a feature shared across the genus, and the lateral line is complete with 41–42 scales — the diagnostic lower count that separates it from H. mussullah.
The pre-dorsal scale count of 12–13 further distinguishes the species. Beyond these meristic characters, the general appearance is typical of Hypselobarbus — silvery to brassy flanks, a relatively high back, and the stout, powerful build expected of a fish that moves through fast-flowing hill river environments. Detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the available literature, but congeners display silverish to olive-gold body colouration with the fins often carrying reddish or yellowish tints.
Habitat
This species is known from the Thunga and Nethravathi rivers of Karnataka and the Krishna River of Maharashtra — all Western Ghats-origin river systems draining the uplands of southwestern and south-central peninsular India. It is a fish of clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and river stretches with rocky or gravelly substrates, the characteristic biotope of large Hypselobarbus throughout the Western Ghats.
Specific physicochemical data for H. pseudomussullah are sparse, but the Western Ghats montane river environment is broadly characterised by cool to moderate water temperatures, high dissolved oxygen from turbulent flow, and near-neutral pH typical of granite and laterite-based catchments. FishBase categorises the species as freshwater and benthopelagic. Water temperatures in the hill-stream reaches of the Thunga and Nethravathi systems are cooler than lowland Indian rivers, dropping noticeably in the monsoon months, which likely triggers the species' reproductive cycle.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies for H. pseudomussullah are not available in the published literature. By analogy with its close congener H. mussullah and the broader Hypselobarbus guild, the species is presumed to be an omnivore with a broad diet encompassing fish, crustaceans, molluscs, algae, plant material and organic detritus — a generalist feeding strategy typical of large riverine barbs.
Large barbs in fast-flowing Western Ghats rivers typically forage over rocky substrate, grazing algae and biofilms, picking invertebrates from crevices, and opportunistically consuming fruits, seeds and other organic matter that falls into the current. The powerful body and two pairs of barbels are consistent with a substrate-oriented foraging style in turbulent water.
Mating
Like all barbs, H. pseudomussullah is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond the immediate act of spawning, and no nest or protective structure is constructed. Courtship takes the form of persistent male pursuit of a gravid female through the water column or across the substrate, culminating in a brief lateral press during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
Large river barbs and mahseers in the Western Ghats are typically seasonal spawners, with breeding linked to the monsoon hydrograph — rising water levels, cooler temperatures, and increased flow appear to act as triggers. During the pre-spawning period males may display intensified colouration and become actively competitive for access to females.
Breeding
H. pseudomussullah, like its congeners, scatters adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel beds and rocky substrates in fast-flowing river sections, with no parental care after spawning. The fertilised eggs settle into the substrate interstices, where current keeps them oxygenated during incubation. Adults take no interest in the eggs or larvae after spawning and may consume any eggs they encounter.
There are no published accounts of captive breeding for this species. Given its large adult size and requirement for cool, turbulent, high-oxygen conditions, successful captive reproduction would be very difficult to achieve in a standard aquarium setting. Recruitment in the wild is presumed to be seasonal, aligned with the monsoon-driven flood pulse characteristic of Western Ghats rivers.
In the aquarium
Hypselobarbus pseudomussullah is not a species found in the ornamental trade and is not suitable for typical aquarium keeping. Its maximum size of over 9.5 in standard length, its requirement for cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, and the turbulent hill-stream conditions of its native range make it wholly impractical for a standard home aquarium.
As with other large Western Ghats barbs, this is a species best appreciated in its natural habitat or in large public aquarium facilities with the infrastructure to replicate strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, and the cooler temperatures of Indian hill rivers. Its conservation significance — as a narrowly endemic species in threatened river systems — further argues against any trade collection.
Conservation
Hypselobarbus pseudomussullah has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List as of 2026. However, its restricted range — confined to the Thunga and Nethravathi rivers of Karnataka and the Krishna River of Maharashtra — and the severe and growing pressures on Western Ghats freshwater ecosystems give significant cause for concern.
The Western Ghats rivers that harbour this and related Hypselobarbus species face a combination of threats: large-scale damming for hydroelectric and irrigation projects (which inundates upstream habitat and blocks migratory movement), agricultural water extraction reducing base flows, sand and gravel mining degrading the rocky substrates on which the species depends, and increasing pollution from both agricultural run-off and urban effluent. The closely related H. mussullah is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the severity of pressures on the shared river network. Given the comparable range restriction and habitat requirements of H. pseudomussullah, a precautionary conservation posture is warranted until a formal assessment is completed.
