Hypselobarbus pulchellus, the Haragi barb, is a large freshwater cyprinid endemic to the rivers of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, on the south-western coast of peninsular India. Described by Francis Day in 1870 from the Mangalore area, it is one of the rarest and most poorly known members of the genus Hypselobarbus, with so few verified records since its original description that the IUCN assessed it as Critically Endangered — possibly Extinct — in 2011. What little is known of its biology marks it out as unusual among Indian barbs: it is reportedly one of the only indigenous Indian freshwater fishes known to consume aquatic reeds and submerged grasses as a significant part of its diet. Its continued existence has been uncertain for decades, and any confirmed sighting in the rivers of coastal Karnataka now carries considerable scientific interest.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypselobarbus pulchellus was originally described as Barbus pulchellus by Francis Day in 1870, based on specimens from the Mangalore area of what is now Karnataka, India. The basionym Barbus pulchellus Day 1870 is recorded in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names; the parenthetical in the current combination marks that Day placed the species in a genus other than Hypselobarbus.

The genus Hypselobarbus was erected to accommodate the large, robust barbs of peninsular India — a group once lumped into the expansive old genus Puntius or the older Barbus, both long since recognised as polyphyletic. Molecular and morphological work through the 1990s and 2000s progressively segregated the Western Ghats big-barb clade, and the genus Hypselobarbus is now accepted for this assemblage of large Indian river cyprinids. H. pulchellus is closely allied to H. dobsoni and H. jerdoni; a 2012 rediscovery publication in the Journal of Threatened Taxa worked to clarify the distinctions among these three confusable species, which had caused taxonomic uncertainty around H. pulchellus for much of the twentieth century.

Morphology

Hypselobarbus pulchellus is a moderately large barb reaching up to 17.5 in in total length. The body plan is typical of the genus: elongate and somewhat laterally compressed, suited to larger river habitats. The mouth is narrow with the upper jaw slightly longer than the lower; the lower labial fold is interrupted at the midline. The interorbital space is flat. Two pairs of barbels are present, with the maxillary pair reaching approximately the length of the eye.

The lateral line carries 30–32 scales along the flank. A diagnostic feature noted in descriptions is a distinct whitish or pale band running along the side of the body — the specific epithet pulchellus, Latin for "pretty" or "beautiful", presumably alludes to this marking. The overall colouration of fresh specimens is not well documented in the literature given the extreme rarity of confirmed material, but the banding is considered a useful field character separating it from closely related Hypselobarbus species in the same river systems.

Habitat

This species is associated with larger streams and rivers of the Western Ghats in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka — the coastal river systems that drain the steep western escarpment of the Ghats into the Arabian Sea. The rivers here are fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams in their upper reaches, transitioning to broader channels with mixed substrates as they approach the coastal plain around Mangalore.

FishBase categorises H. pulchellus as a benthopelagic freshwater species. Beyond the broad habitat description, detailed water-parameter data for this species are sparse in the published record — the extreme rarity of verified specimens has meant that systematic ecological surveys have not been carried out. Its congeners in similar Western Ghats river systems typically inhabit clear, relatively fast water with rocky or gravel substrates, and it is reasonable to assume broadly similar preferences for H. pulchellus.

Feeding

One of the most distinctive and scientifically notable features of Hypselobarbus pulchellus is its diet. FishBase records it as one of the only indigenous Indian freshwater fishes known to consume aquatic reeds and submerged grasses as a meaningful dietary component — a degree of herbivory unusual among cyprinids of the region. This herbivorous tendency may relate to the plant communities present in the broader, slower sections of its coastal Karnataka rivers.

Beyond this unusual dietary note, the feeding biology of the species is not well documented. Large Hypselobarbus species generally are opportunistic omnivores, taking plant material, algae, invertebrates, and detritus according to seasonal availability. Given the scarcity of confirmed wild specimens, detailed gut-content analyses are lacking.

Mating

No direct observations of spawning behaviour in Hypselobarbus pulchellus have been published, reflecting the extreme scarcity of wild material. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Hypselobarbus, the species almost certainly follows the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal among barbs: there is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of eggs or fry.

In large river barbs such as this group, spawning is typically seasonal, often timed to the pre-monsoon or monsoon period when river levels rise and temperature and flow conditions trigger breeding behaviour. A driving male pursues a gravid female over suitable substrate or among vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together without any preparation of a nest or holding site. The fertilised eggs are left entirely to chance.

Breeding

There are no documented captive-breeding records for Hypselobarbus pulchellus. The species has not, to any published account, been successfully maintained in aquaria, and the reproductive details that are standard knowledge for commonly kept barbs — clutch size, incubation period, larval development — are simply unknown for this fish.

By analogy with other large Hypselobarbus species, eggs would be adhesive or semi-buoyant, scattered over gravel or among aquatic vegetation without parental attention. Adults of large river barbs show no guarding behaviour, and the eggs and larvae are dispersed by current. Fry would be expected to follow the pattern of other large cyprinids: absorbing the yolk sac before becoming free-swimming, then shifting rapidly to planktonic invertebrates as first food.

In the aquarium

Hypselobarbus pulchellus is not kept in the aquarium hobby in any meaningful sense. No verified captive population is known, and the species is effectively absent from the ornamental trade. At 17.5 in maximum length, any serious attempt at maintaining it would require a very large, well-oxygenated river-biotope aquarium replicating the clean, fast-flowing conditions of the Western Ghats river systems — similar to the requirements of other large Indian mahseer-type cyprinids.

Its unusual dietary preference for aquatic reeds and grasses would be an interesting management challenge in captivity. For now, H. pulchellus exists essentially as a museum specimen and a rarely glimpsed wild fish of great conservation concern rather than as a practical aquarium subject.

Conservation

Hypselobarbus pulchellus is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 17 March 2011 under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), with the added qualifier that it may already be Extinct. Since Day's original 1870 description from the Mangalore area, verified records have been exceptionally scarce — a situation that led to genuine uncertainty about whether the species still survives. A rediscovery paper published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa helped clarify its identity relative to the closely similar H. dobsoni and H. jerdoni, but confirmed sightings remain very rare.

The threats to this species are those affecting the entire freshwater fauna of the Western Ghats coastal rivers: agricultural and urban runoff, sand mining, construction of check dams and diversions that alter flow regimes, and the general degradation of riparian and in-stream habitat in the densely populated Dakshina Kannada coastal zone. The Western Ghats are a global biodiversity hotspot, and the river systems of coastal Karnataka support several other endemic and threatened fish species alongside H. pulchellus. Its continued existence depends on the health of these rivers and targeted surveys to locate any remaining populations.
