Morphology

The body is markedly elevated at the dorsal profile relative to the slender, tapered caudal peduncle, giving the fish a somewhat arched silhouette. The mouth is sub-terminal or slightly inferior, adapted for picking food from rocky or gravel substrates.
Detailed morphometric data for this species are not well documented in accessible literature. Size data are sparse; large Hypselobarbus species in comparable South Indian drainages reach 12–19.5 in total length at maturity, and H. vaigaiensis is presumed to be of similar stature given its mahseer-type ecology, though published maximum size records specific to this species have not been confirmed. Habitat
Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis is restricted to the Vaigai River system of Tamil Nadu, originating in the high-elevation sholas and grasslands of the Palani Hills and Cardamom Hills (southeastern Western Ghats) before flowing east across the Madurai plateau to the Bay of Bengal. The upper reaches, where species of this genus are most at home, are swift, well-oxygenated streams and river sections over bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel — the hill-river template shared by mahseer across South Asia.
Water conditions in the cool, shaded upper Vaigai headwaters are broadly near-neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.5), moderately hard given the rock mineralogy of the Ghats, and cool relative to the lowland plains — temperatures in the upland reaches can drop into the high teens Celsius during cooler months. Dissolved oxygen is high. As the river descends to the plains it warms significantly and the character changes; this species' core habitat is the upland section. The Vaigai basin is significantly impacted by water diversion — the Vaigai Dam and the Periyar-Vaigai irrigation scheme redirect large volumes of water, altering flow regimes critical to riverine fish.
Feeding
Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis is an omnivore in the broad sense typical of large river barbs. Large Hypselobarbus feed on a mix of aquatic invertebrates, detritus, algae and submerged plant matter gleaned from the riverbed and rocky surfaces, supplemented by terrestrial items that fall into the current. The sub-terminal mouth and robust pharyngeal apparatus of the genus allow processing of harder food items including molluscs and the tough outer coats of seeds, which may be seasonally important in rivers draining forested catchments.

Mating
Like all barbs, Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond the transient courtship chase, and no parental care of any kind follows spawning. Large river barbs in the Hypselobarbus and Tor mould are typically seasonal, migratory broadcast spawners: adults aggregate and move upstream to gravel-bedded shallows — often triggered by the onset of the monsoon — where spawning occurs over the substrate.
Courting males pursue gravid females through the current and over the gravel, driving alongside them as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle into the gravel interstices. There is no post-spawning association between adults and eggs or larvae. Adults disperse or move back downstream after spawning, leaving the eggs and subsequent larvae entirely unattended.
Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts for Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis are documented in the aquarium literature. The large Hypselobarbus species are not bred in hobbyist aquaria and rarely in commercial facilities; some congeners have been bred experimentally in research hatcheries as part of conservation or fisheries programmes in South India, but these programmes focus on economically or ecologically important species and data specific to H. vaigaiensis are absent.
The reproductive biology inferred from the genus and from comparable South Indian river barbs suggests a monsoon-cued, gravel-broadcast strategy: spawning coincides with rising water levels and increased flow during the south-west monsoon (June–September), with larvae drifting or holding in gravel interstices until yolk absorption is complete. Fecundity is likely high, as is characteristic of large iteroparous riverine cyprinids that make no investment in offspring beyond the broadcast of eggs. In captivity the fish would require very large tanks or ponds, cool well-oxygenated water, and gravel substrate — conditions that make hobbyist breeding impractical.

Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and is not kept in home aquaria. Its requirements — large body size, cool well-oxygenated fast-flowing water, and a strong preference for open current — are difficult to meet outside specialist public aquaria or very large dedicated systems. For public aquaria with large cool-water river exhibits, the genus Hypselobarbus can make impressive display animals, but sourcing is a practical barrier given that these species are rarely if ever bred in captivity and wild collection is increasingly restricted or problematic given conservation concerns. The species is better regarded as a river fish of scientific and conservation interest than as a candidate for the hobby.
Conservation
Hypselobarbus vaigaiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). This is not uncommon for narrow-range South Indian endemic barbs, many of which lack the population data needed for a formal assessment. The broader picture for the genus is concerning: several Hypselobarbus species assessed by the IUCN are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered, and the pattern of restricted single-river or sub-catchment endemism that characterises the genus means individual species have very small total ranges with little scope to absorb habitat loss.
For H. vaigaiensis, the specific threats align with those facing the Vaigai River system as a whole. The Vaigai Dam and the Periyar–Vaigai diversion scheme have substantially reduced dry-season flows in the middle and upper river, altering temperature, oxygen levels and the gravel-bedded shallow habitats that large barbs depend on for spawning. Agricultural abstraction for irrigation — the Vaigai basin is one of the most heavily cultivated in Tamil Nadu — further reduces flows. Pollution from agricultural chemicals and urban wastewater in the lower and middle river degrade water quality. As a large-bodied, slow-maturing fish tied to a single river system, H. vaigaiensis has limited capacity to recover from habitat disruption or overfishing.
