Taxonomy & naming
Hypsibarbus myitkyinae was first described by Hora in 1929, based on material from Indawgyi Lake in the Myitkyina District, Kachin State, northern Myanmar. The original description placed it in the genus Barbus — the broad catch-all genus then applied to most Old World barbs — under the combination Barbus myitkyinae. The parenthetical authority notation "(Hora, 1929)" signals the subsequent transfer out of that original genus.
The current placement in Hypsibarbus follows Rainboth (1996), who erected the genus in his monograph on the large barbs of southeastern Asia (University of California Publications in Zoology, vol. 129). Rainboth recognised Hypsibarbus as a coherent clade of large, deep-bodied barbs distributed across the rivers of Indochina and adjacent drainages, separating them from the heterogeneous assemblage historically lumped in Barbus and Puntius. Hypsibarbus myitkyinae is the northwesternmost member of the genus, extending into the upper Irrawaddy system well beyond the predominantly Indochinese core of the clade.
