Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus stevensonii was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1870. The species epithet honours an individual named Stevenson, presumably an officer or naturalist who collected or otherwise contributed material in the region during the colonial period — a common naming convention of the era.
The genus Neolissochilus belongs to the subfamily Labeoninae (or Garrinae, depending on the classification followed) within the family Cyprinidae. These are the Asian mahseers — large, powerful rheophilic barbs of hill streams and mountain rivers across South and Southeast Asia — distinct from the more commercially prominent mahseers of the genus Tor, though ecologically and morphologically similar. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Neolissochilus stevensonii Day, 1870. Older literature may refer to the species under Barbus or broadly as a mahseer without genus distinction; the name has not been widely used in aquarium literature.
Morphology
Stevenson's mahseer shares the body plan typical of the Neolissochilus group: a tall, deep, laterally compressed and well-rounded body on a large frame, with the powerful caudal peduncle and broad tail of a fish built for life in swift current. The scales are large and metallic golden in overall ground colour. A prominent black marking — described as a thick dorsal or lateral stripe or line — is a distinguishing feature noted in trade specimens.
The genus is known to reach impressive sizes; FishBase records the group reaching up to 47 in total length, though most species are considerably smaller in practice and reliable maximum size data specifically for N. stevensonii are sparse. The fish has the thick, fleshy lips and subterminal mouth typical of rheophilic cyprinids that graze on algae and invertebrates from rocky substrate.
Habitat
Neolissochilus stevensonii is endemic to Myanmar (Burma). Its habitat is characterised as rapid streams with rocky bottoms — the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill rivers and upland drainages that mahseers as a group are adapted to exploit. FishBase records the species requiring dissolved oxygen above 6 mg/L, consistent with an obligate rheophile that cannot persist in sluggish or degraded lowland waters.
The temperature tolerance recorded by FishBase spans 64–82 °F, reflecting the range of a species that may encounter cooler highland conditions as well as warmer valley stretches of its home rivers. The rocky substrate and high current velocities of its preferred habitat are typical of the hill-stream guild in mainland Southeast Asia, where riffles and cascades provide the aeration and clean gravel that large cyprinids require.
Feeding
Mahseers of the genus Neolissochilus are omnivores with a broad diet, as is common across the group. FishBase notes that the genus feeds on algae, crustaceans, insects, frogs, other fish and fallen fruits — a catholic range that reflects the opportunistic feeding strategy of large rheophilic cyprinids living in seasonally variable river systems.
In fast streams, foraging involves both grazing biofilm and encrusting algae from boulders (using the fleshy lips and hard mouth of the labeonine cyprinid) and capturing invertebrates dislodged by current or fallen from the riparian vegetation. The inclusion of fallen fruits in the diet points to a strong association with intact riparian forest, a habitat feature that is increasingly threatened across Myanmar.
Mating
Like all barbs and mahseers, Neolissochilus stevensonii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. Spawning in large riverine mahseers is typically seasonal and often linked to monsoon-driven flood pulses that trigger upstream migrations to upland spawning grounds over clean gravel or rocky substrate.
During courtship a driving male pursues a gravid female through the current, and eggs and milt are broadcast together over the substrate. No pair bond is formed beyond the act of spawning, and neither parent remains with the eggs or fry. The adhesive eggs settle into crevices between stones, where current provides aeration in the absence of any parental fanning.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Neolissochilus stevensonii has not been documented in accessible sources. As an endemic Myanmar species, it is very rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and has not been the subject of commercial aquaculture. The occasional specimens offered by specialist importers (such as predatory fish dealers) would be wild-caught.
In the wild, large mahseers typically spawn once per year in association with seasonal rains and rising water levels, broadcasting eggs over gravel riffles in upland reaches. The eggs receive no parental care; survival depends on the oxygenating action of fast current and the physical shelter of the rocky substrate. Fry and juveniles are presumed to develop in shallower, calmer water before moving into stronger current as they grow.
In the aquarium
Neolissochilus stevensonii is an extreme specialist acquisition, rarely available and suitable only for very large, purpose-built systems. Like other mahseers it demands fast, highly oxygenated water with strong filtration and circulation, a rocky or gravel substrate, and cool to moderate temperatures (64–79 °F). The fish is not tolerant of warm, still or low-oxygen conditions, and it requires substantial open swimming space given its potential size.
In the aquarium trade it appears occasionally through specialist importers of large or unusual Asian cyprinids. Its care mirrors that of other large rheophilic barbs: feed a varied omnivore diet of high-quality pellets, frozen crustaceans, and plant-based food; keep water well-oxygenated and perform frequent water changes to maintain quality. It is best kept singly or with other large, fast-moving species that can handle the current. Given the species' Data Deficient status and Myanmar endemism, sourcing provenance and supporting sustainable collection practices are important considerations for any keeper.
Conservation
Neolissochilus stevensonii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessment ID 168498/6503001). The Data Deficient status reflects a genuine lack of survey data for Myanmar's highland fish fauna rather than any confirmation of stability. Endemism to a single country with ongoing habitat pressures makes the species inherently vulnerable: deforestation, sedimentation from agricultural expansion, dam construction on Myanmar's upland rivers, and water extraction all threaten the fast, rocky stream habitats the species requires.
Myanmar's freshwater biodiversity has received comparatively little systematic ichthyological attention, and the gap in knowledge that produces a DD assessment is itself a conservation concern. Without baseline population data it is impossible to detect declines. The combination of a restricted range, specialised habitat requirements, and a data-poor status argues for precautionary treatment — the species should not be assumed safe simply because it has not yet been assessed as threatened.
